VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments
The initial enthusiasm witnessed in the market yesterday couldn’t be sustained. The expected short-covering did not happen, bringing the prices down towards the close. Also, the market had partly discounted the GST reforms earlier. The high valuations even amidst geopolitical and tariff-related headwinds helped bears to accumulate short positions in the market.
The sustained massive buying by mutual funds in equity has touched Rs 70500 crores in August. With high money muscle facilitated by the sustaining fund flows into the market mutual bund buying will support the market during declines.
A significant feature of the present market trend is the weakness in overvalued mid and smallcaps and relative strength in the fairly valued largecaps. This is a healthy trend which can be expected to continue.

Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities
While markets are likely to see a positive opening, the Next-Gen GST Reforms should strengthen the case for a consumption-led recovery, with auto and consumption expected to benefit the most. But having said that, the broader and macro-outlook is still vulnerable to global macro uncertainties – especially on Trump's US tariff of 50% on India and, most importantly, the persistent FII outflows.
Meanwhile, the spotlight will also be on the US jobs data later today amid worries about labour market health, while the Federal Reserve’s September 17 rate cut is still on the table despite sticky US PCE inflation data.
On the domestic front, a quieter but powerful bullish consolidation could be the preferred theme at Dalal Street, while any strength for Nifty could be seen above its biggest hurdle at 25155 mark.

The Nifty pared most of its gains after a gap-up start driven by optimism over GST reforms. The daily close was just below the 21 EMA, indicating a continuation of weakness, although the index appears to be nearing a potential trend reversal.
A decisive move above 24,750 could provide the strength needed for the Nifty to move towards 25,000. A sustained move above 25,000 could trigger a further rally.
On the other hand, failure to close above 24,750 within the next two to three days may lead to renewed selling pressure on the index

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking
Markets witnessed a volatile session and ended marginally higher, supported by sweeping GST reforms that signaled a structural tax overhaul. The Nifty opened on a strong note, led by sharp gains in auto and consumer staples, but profit-taking and weakness in select heavyweights dragged the index lower as the day progressed. Eventually, it closed with modest gains at 24,734.30. Sector-wise, auto, financials, and FMCG led the advance, while IT, energy, and realty were the notable laggards. The broader indices, however, underperformed after the recent upmove, losing over half a percent each.
The GST 2.0 reforms strengthen the case for a consumption-led recovery, with auto and consumer staples expected to benefit the most. Select metals and infrastructure names linked to rural stimulus also remain in focus. That said, the broader outlook stays vulnerable to global macro uncertainties, continued FII outflows, and persistent U.S. tariff headwinds. In the near term, consolidation in the benchmark index cannot be ruled out. Hence, we recommend maintaining selective exposure to structurally strong themes while keeping a close eye on the risk–reward equation.

Sensex Today | Dollar holds ground as bonds find footing, jobs data looms
The dollar mostly held its ground on Friday as bond markets stabilised and traders awaited key U.S. jobs data expected to firm up the case for an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.
The greenback inched up in U.S. hours on Thursday and was poised for a second straight weekly gain on relatively light trading and as investors refrained from big moves ahead of the payrolls figures.
Data on Thursday showing higher-than-expected applications for jobless benefits in the United States served as a prelude to the more critical non-farm payrolls report that will feed into the Fed's policy decision this month.
Bonds rallied in the U.S., Europe, and Japan after fiscal concerns spurred a run-up in long-term yields. The yen edged higher as Japan's chief trade negotiator spelled out details of a solidified trade deal with the U.S.
The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of currencies of other major trading partners, was little changed at 98.207, set for a 0.4% gain this week.
The greenback dropped 0.2% to 148.22 yen. The euro was up 0.1% on the day at $1.1656.
