Wall Street ended sharply lower on Friday, with the S&amp;amp;P 500 closing at its lowest in six months, as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran entered its fourth ​week, deepening worries about inflation and the potential for higher interest rates.

The conflict in the Middle East showed no signs of easing. The ‌U.S. military was deploying an amphibious assault ship with thousands of additional Marines and sailors to the Middle East, while Iran's new supreme leader hailed Iran's &quot;unity&quot; and &quot;resistance.&quot;

&quot;The market is finally settling into the idea that this may go on longer than initially expected, and I think that's why markets are selling off. This conflict may go on not for just a few weeks, but ​maybe beyond several months,&quot; said Jake Dollarhide, CEO of Longbow Asset Management in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN COMPANIES FALL

Wall Street's most valuable companies dropped, with ​Nvidia and Tesla losing over 3% each. Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Microsoft were all down about 2%.

U.S. Treasuries fell for a ⁠third session, in step with a broader selloff in UK and European government bonds, as the Middle East conflict kept oil prices elevated and reinforced inflation worries.

U.S. ​rate futures show the Fed is more likely to raise interest rates than cut them by the end of 2026, according to CME's FedWatch tool.

&quot;We just have a ​classic environment that is pushing rates up and it's driven by higher inflation expectations, which relate back to the oil price. And the fact that we're heading into the fourth week of the war suggests that that stress is not going away anytime soon,&quot; said Padhraic Garvey, head of global rates and debt strategy at ING in New York.
S&amp;amp;P 500 stock moves

The S&amp;amp;P 500 declined 1.51% ​to end the session at 6,506.48 points, its lowest since September.

The Nasdaq slumped 2.01% to 21,647.61 points, leaving it down almost 10% from its record high ​close on October 29.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.96% to 45,577.47 points.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies dropped 2.26%, leaving it down 10% from its record high close on ‌January 22.

Nine ⁠of the 11 S&amp;amp;P 500 sector indexes declined, led lower by utilities, down 4.11%, followed by a 3.15% loss in real estate.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 energy sector index was near flat for the day, but it logged its 13th straight weekly gain. That week-over-week rally was its longest since at least the late 1980s, according to LSEG data, as geopolitical events in Venezuela and the Middle East dominated much of the first quarter.

Friday marked the once-in-a-quarter simultaneous expiry of derivatives contracts tied to stocks, ​index options and futures, also known as &quot;triple ​witching,&quot; and volume on U.S. exchanges ⁠was heavy, with 27.5 billion shares traded, compared to an average of 20.1 billion shares over the previous 20 sessions.

For the week, the S&amp;amp;P 500 lost 1.9%, while the Nasdaq and Dow lost just over 2%.

Since the war in Iran began ​on February 28, the S&amp;amp;P 500 has lost 5.4%, the Nasdaq has declined 4.5% and the Dow is down ​nearly 7%. All three ⁠major indexes are below their 200-day moving averages, underscoring the recent deterioration of sentiment on Wall Street.

Super Micro Computer tumbled 33% after three people associated with the artificial intelligence server maker were charged with smuggling at least $2.5 billion of AI technology to China. Rival Dell advanced.

FedEx, often seen as a barometer of business activity, issued upbeat forecasts and said global ⁠demand was ​holding steady despite geopolitical tensions, sending its shares up almost 1%.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones within ​the S&amp;amp;P 500 by a 3.4-to-one ratio.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 posted 11 new highs and 36 new lows; the Nasdaq recorded 43 new highs and 274 new lows.

Wall Street skids as Middle East turmoil fans inflation fear

US stocks ended down on Friday, capping a week in ‌which erratic crude oil prices whipsawed equities, as investors gauged how the war in Iran was affecting the global oil supply.

All three major U.S. stock indexes logged daily and weekly declines.

The small-cap Russell 2000 ended at its lowest close of the year so far.

Crude prices fluctuated before heading higher, even after U.S. President Donald Trump temporarily eased sanctions on Russian oil to assuage supply concerns.

&quot;We've seen volatility in the energy ​market that rivals any two-week period in cryptocurrency history. So, it's hard to say that it's being driven by fundamentals,&quot; said Paul Nolte, senior ​wealth advisor &amp;amp; market strategist at Murphy &amp;amp; Sylvest in Elmhurst, Illinois. &quot;It's very much an emotional market, so it really doesn't make sense ⁠trying to trade, let alone invest in this market.&quot;

Nolte added: &quot;You just sit back and wait for things to unfold and to settle, and that may happen ​over the course of a couple of weeks.&quot;

Front-month WTI crude futures settled at $98.71 per barrel, up 3.11% on the day. Brent rose 2.67% to $103.14, settling above $100 per ​barrel for the first time since August 2022.

Trump's vow to hit Iran &quot;very hard over the next week,&quot; combined with reports that the conflict had spread to Lebanon, Kuwait, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Oman, has dimmed hopes of de-escalation and near-term resolution.

Trump's comments prompted Iran to tighten its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, conduit for one-fifth of the world's oil. On Thursday, the International ​Energy Agency said the war will cause the largest-ever disruption in global crude supply.

Crude prices and market volatility

The Commerce Department's sharp downward revision to fourth-quarter GDP growth dominated a deluge of mostly disappointing economic ​indicators. The Personal Consumption Expenditures report showed little movement in the U.S. Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, while other data showed weakening demand for durable goods.

Despite softer economic data, the U.S. ‌Federal Reserve was expected ⁠to leave its key interest rate unchanged at the conclusion of next week's monetary policy meeting. With the threat of spiking oil prices further stoking inflation, the odds of a near-term rate cut are dwindling.

&quot;Inflation remains elevated, and with the possibility of energy prices eventually moving into the pipeline, the Fed is likely to stay on hold for a longer period of time,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities in New York.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 119.38 points, or 0.26%, ​to 46,558.47, the S&amp;amp;P 500 lost 40.43 ​points, or 0.61%, to 6,632.19 and ⁠the Nasdaq Composite lost 206.62 points, or 0.93%, to 22,105.36.

Among the 11 major sectors of the S&amp;amp;P 500, technology shares posted the biggest percentage loss. Utilities enjoyed the largest percentage gain.

Amid mounting concerns over credit quality, the S&amp;amp;P 500 financial sector fell 3.4% on ​the week.

Design software maker Adobe dropped 7.6% after it was announced that longtime CEO Shantanu Narayen will leave his role once ​a successor is appointed, ⁠renewing worries over potential AI disruption.

Meta Platforms slid 3.8% following a report that the social media behemoth has postponed the release of its artificial intelligence model &quot;Avocado&quot; to at least May.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.9-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 71 new highs and 185 new lows on the NYSE.

On the Nasdaq, 1,714 stocks rose and 2,966 fell ⁠as declining issues ​outnumbered advancers by a 1.73-to-1 ratio.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 posted 13 new 52-week highs and 11 new ​lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 33 new highs and 193 new lows.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 18.12 billion shares, compared with the 19.84 billion average for the full session over the last 20 ​trading days.

US stocks close down as oil spikes 12%, job market weakens

Wall Street's three main indexes closed down ​on Friday amid a sudden setback in the U.S. labor market and a 12% spike in U.S. oil ‌prices due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

A disappointing payrolls report intensified worries that the U.S. economy could be cooling just as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East push energy costs sharply higher.

That mix threatens to box in the Federal Reserve, complicating its path to rate cuts and reviving concerns about ​renewed inflation pressure.

&quot;The conflict now looks likely to last far longer than many had hoped, and oil prices are ​escalating as a result,&quot; said Kristina Hooper, chief market strategist at financial firm Man Group in New ⁠York. &quot;It raises the question of whether the Fed will even be able to cut rates.&quot;

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.95% ​to 47,501.55 points, posting its steepest weekly percentage drop since early April 2025.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 lost 1.33% to 6,740.00 points and had ​its worst week since mid-October. The Russell 2000 recorded its sharpest weekly fall since early August.

The Nasdaq Composite slipped 1.59% to 22,387.68.

Oil prices jumped, driven by the U.S.-Israeli military attack in Iran, which halted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and by warnings from Qatar that crude could surge to $150 a ​barrel.

U.S. crude oil futures climbed more than 12% on Friday, to more than $90 per barrel, while international Brent rose about 8.5% ​to $92 per barrel.

&quot;We are marching closer each day to $100 a barrel of oil, and that has caused much greater volatility and anxiety,&quot; said Michael ‌Arone, chief ⁠investment strategist at State Street Investment Management.

The Cboe Volatility Index Wall Street's most-watched gauge of investor anxiety, jumped 5.74 points to 29.49, its highest close since April 2022.

The increase in oil prices fueled expectations of higher input costs and pressure on corporate profits, adding to the likelihood of weaker credit conditions, which is typically negative for lenders.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 Banks Index , which tracks major U.S. bank ​stocks within the S&amp;amp;P 500, fell ​2.03%.

BlackRock fell 7.1% on ⁠a decision to limit withdrawals from a major private credit fund.

Lender Western Alliance fell 8.4% after suing Jefferies for not making a payment for loans tied to bankrupt auto parts supplier First Brands Group. Jefferies dropped ​13.5%.

Signs of a weakening U.S. jobs market came amid a strike by healthcare workers and harsh winter ​weather. The unemployment ⁠rate increased to 4.4%.

Travel stocks lagged as fuel costs jumped, with the S&amp;amp;P Passenger Airlines Sub‑Index, which follows passenger‑carrier stocks, dropping 4.07%.

S&amp;amp;P energy stocks rose 0.13% due to the prospect that higher energy costs will bring stronger revenue.

Safe‑haven asset gold gained 1.83%, while bitcoin slid 4.30%.

Among ⁠other stocks, ​chip company Marvell Technology closed 18.4% higher after forecasting fiscal 2028 revenue above estimates.

Volume ​on U.S. exchanges was 19.95 billion shares, compared with the 17.82 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

US stocks close down as oil spikes 12%, job market weakens

U.S. stocks ended higher on Friday, led by gains in Alphabet, Amazon and other Wall Street heavyweights after the Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump's global tariffs.

The U.S. top court, which has a conservative majority, ruled 6-3 against Trump's global tariffs, enacted last year under a federal law meant for national emergencies.

Trump called the ruling a &quot;disgrace&quot; and said he would impose a 10% global tariff for 150 days under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to replace emergency duties that the Supreme Court .

Investors were relieved that Trump's newly announced global tariff was not higher, said Mike Dickson, head of research and quantitative strategies at Horizon Investments in Charlotte, North Carolina.

&quot;Today is a removal of some uncertainty, and we're on to the next phase,&quot; Dickson said.

Some of Wall Street's most valuable and widely held companies rose, including a 3.7% rise in Google-parent Alphabet, a 2.6% increase in Amazon and a 1.5% rally in Apple.

Shares of U.S. toymaker Hasbro , online furniture retailer Wayfair, Pottery Barn-owner Williams-Sonoma and luxury furniture retailer RH- all hit by tariffs - gained between 0.5% and 2.3%.

Thousands of companies around the world have filed lawsuits challenging Trump's sweeping tariffs and sought refunds on the duties they have paid. There is a risk more than $175 billion in U.S. tariff collections will need to be refunded, according to Penn-Wharton Budget Model economists.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 climbed 0.69% to end the session at 6,909.51 points.

The Nasdaq gained 0.90% to 22,886.07 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.47% to 49,625.97 points.

Nine of the 11 S&amp;amp;P 500 sector indexes rose, led by communication services, up 2.65%, followed by a 1.27% gain in consumer discretionary.

For the week, the S&amp;amp;P 500 rose 1.08%, the Nasdaq gained 1.51% and the Dow edged up 0.25%.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 is up almost 1% in 2026, trailing a gain of over 3% in MSCI's global stock gauge.

Data released early in the day showed U.S. economic growth slowed more than expected in the fourth quarter, while a separate reading indicated inflation picked up in December.

Traders see just over a 50% chance the Fed will cut interest rates by its June policy meeting, according to CME's FedWatch Tool, opens new tab.

Investors jittery about the health of Wall Street's AI rally will scrutinize Nvidia's quarterly results next Wednesday. AI-linked technology stocks have gyrated in recent months due to concerns about high valuations and limited evidence that massive investments in AI are driving revenue and profit growth.

Industries ranging from software to logistics have also been hit by concerns that rapidly improving AI tools could disrupt their business models and intensify competition.

Akamai Technologies slumped 14% after the cloud company forecast first-quarter adjusted profit below Wall Street estimates.

Advancing issues outnumbered falling ones within the S&amp;amp;P 500 by a 2.0-to-one ratio.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 posted 34 new highs and 7 new lows; the Nasdaq recorded 81 new highs and 153 new lows.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was relatively light, with 18.3 billion shares traded, compared to an average of 20.3 billion shares over the previous 20 sessions.
