Closing Bell: Sensex gains 182 pts, Nifty above 24,650 amid volatility; metals rally, banks fall

Indian equity indices ended on a positive in the volatile session on on May 14. At close, the Sensex was up 182.34 points or 0.22 percent at 81,330.56, and the Nifty was up 88.55 points or 0.36 percent at 24,666.90.

Markets were choppy in intra-day trades but managed to end in the green on selective buying support as investors don't want to rush into equities after Monday's strong optimism.

While foreign fund flows in the domestic market will be critical going ahead, investors are worried that US-China settling tariff disputes could revive foreign investors' interest in Chinese markets again.

The Nifty traded within a narrow range today, following two days of high volatile moves. The short-term trend remains positive, as the index continues to remain above critical moving average. After a sharp rally, this sideways movement appears to be a healthy consolidation, suggesting the market is catching its breath before the next move.

As long as the index stays above the crucial support level of 24,400, the bulls are likely to maintain their grip. In the near term, the index might move towards the 24,850–25,000 range. However, a drop below 24,400 could delay this upward trajectory and lead to further consolidation.

Market optimism is gaining momentum, driven by a sharp decline in both global and domestic risks. In this environment, the broader markets are on an upswing, supported by a strengthening recovery in local demand, as reflected in the March quarter corporate earnings. This has sparked a rally in mid- and small-cap stocks, which had underperformed earlier due to premium valuations, earnings downgrades, and moderation in foreign institutional investor (FII) and Retail inflows.

Currently, Midcaps are witnessing renewed interest, fuelled by marginal upgrades in recent earnings and the potential for a stronger rebound in FY26.

Contributing factors include a consistent decline in inflation, rising disposable incomes, increased government spending, and falling interest rates. Meanwhile, a pause in global trade tensions is boosting sentiment in international markets, with metals gaining traction amid easing concerns over an economic slowdown.

Bolstered by a weaker US dollar index, cheaper imported commodities, and a prevailing risk-on mood in the markets, the Indian rupee saw gains against the US dollar today. The retreat in crude oil prices and the overall softening of the greenback acted as tailwinds, specifically supporting the local currency during today's trading.

In the near future, the USDINR spot rate is anticipated to find a floor near the 84.90 mark, while encountering upward pressure around the 85.70 level.

Indian equities witnessed heightened volatility throughout the trading session. After a strong opening, the Index soared higher, mainly driven by Metal and IT stocks. However, a sudden decline in Banking stocks pulled the Index into negative territory. Despite this setback, the Index gradually recovered and ended the session at 24,666.90 with gains of 88.55 points.

In addition to Metals and IT, the Realty and Energy sectors also outperformed. Positive momentum persisted in the broader markets, with Mid and Smallcap indices advancing by 1.11% & 1.44% respectively and outperforming the Frontline Index.

On the technical front, the daily chart reflects the formation of a small green candle, indicating cautious optimism.

For the Index to resume its uptrend, it must decisively break above the 24,770 mark, which would then open the door toward the next resistance at 24,900. On the downside, 24,550 is expected to act as immediate support.

Indian rupee ended 7 paise higher at 85.27 per dollar on Wednesday versus Tuesday's close of 85.34.

Tata Steel, Shriram Finance, Bharat Electronics, Hindalco Industries, Eternal were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers included Asian Paints, Cipla, Tata Motors, Kotak Mahindra Bank, NTPC.

Broader indices outperformed the main indoces with BSE Midcap index rising 1 percent and Smallcap index rose 1.6 percent.

Among sectors, except bank, all other sectoral indices ended in the green with realty, oil & gas, telecom, media, IT and metal indices up 1-2.5 percent.

Foreign promoter entity General Atlantic Singapore Fund Pte sold 86 lakh shares at an average price of Rs 1,040.31 per share, and another 86 lakh shares at an average price of Rs 1,041.56 per share, equivalent to 9.99% stake worth 1,790.4 crore.

However, Societe Generale acquired 34,47,285 shares at an average price of Rs 1,040 per share, Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund bought 19,32,367 shares at an average price of Rs 1,040 per share, and Copthall Mauritius Investment purchased 9,44,185 shares at an average price of Rs 1,040.66 per share, which in total picked 3.67% stake worth Rs 657.74 crore.

The WPI data being on a 13 month low is a strong indicator of robust economic growth. The rate of inflation as per the food index has cooled off by over 50%, resonating a strong domestic growth backed moderation in food prices owing to a seasonal drop.

This along with a strong CPI performance points toward a well-sustained liquidity flow fuelling economic growth. With the upcoming monsoon season projected to be favourable, the food inflation is likely to remain in check. We also believe the strengthening of the Rupee will help control edible oil and pulses prices, as they have a significant impact in reducing inflation.

Last but not the least, the ongoing Primary Agricultural Credit Society (PACS) plan is the most ambitious project ever undertaken in India to enable a decentralised storage of food grain. This will eliminate malpractices like black marketing and hoarding, while ensuring availability of food grains round the year.

Given this backdrop, we expect India will be better equipped than ever to manage food inflation going forward.

Sterling Tools through its subsidiary, Sterling Gtake (SGEM), the company has entered the development, manufacturing, and marketing of magnet-free traction motors for electric vehicles. It has signed a Technology Licensing Agreement with Advanced Electric Machines (AEM), UK, to manufacture these motors at its plant in Faridabad.
