Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets bounced back sharply today and closed higher after a series of weak sessions, as relief on global trade and geopolitical fronts helped improve risk sentiment. After a gap-up opening, the Nifty witnessed an initial dip and then moved in a narrow range for the remainder of the session. Eventually, it settled at 25,289.90, gaining 0.53%. The recovery was broad-based, with pharma, FMCG and energy emerging as the top gaining sectors. Broader indices also rebounded, with midcap and smallcap indices advancing in the range of 0.84% to 1.41%.

Sentiment improved significantly amid reports of easing geopolitical tensions and a perceived reduction in near-term tariff risks following comments from the US President at Davos. Global markets rallied overnight, and this positive momentum spilled over into domestic equities, leading to short-covering and renewed buying interest across sectors.

From a technical perspective, the Nifty is hovering around its long-term moving average, the 200-day DEMA near the 25,150 level. Sustaining above this zone will be crucial for any further recovery towards the 25,600 mark; otherwise, the decline may resume with the next support placed in the 24,750–24,900 range. Among sectors, metals and PSU banks are showing notable strength, while others continue to offer mixed signals. In this environment, participants should align their positions with a strong focus on risk management, given the likelihood of continued choppiness in the near term.

Abhinav Tiwari Research Analyst at Bonanza

Today, the Indian equity markets saw a strong recovery after falling sharply in the previous sessions. The Sensex rose by 0.49% to 82,307, while the Nifty 50 was up by 0.53%. Mid cap stocks performed better than large cap stocks, showing improved risk appetite among investors. The rally was mainly driven by positive global cues. US markets posted their strongest gains in nearly two months, and Asian markets followed the same trend.

Investor confidence improved after Donald Trump said he would pursue a diplomatic framework regarding Greenland and withdrew planned tariffs on several European countries. This reduced fears of a wider trade war and helped calm global markets.

This rebound came after three consecutive days of heavy selling. Banking and consumer stocks supported the recovery, although some profit booking was seen later in the session. IIFL Finance reported strong Q3 FY26 earnings, but its stock fell sharply after the Income Tax Department ordered a special audit, which the company said was procedural and had no immediate financial impact.

Other stocks such as Eternal Limited, IndiGo, Adani Green, and Dr Reddy’s gained on positive company specific news. The RBI’s January bulletin remained optimistic on India’s growth outlook, projecting GDP growth of 7.4% in FY26. While volatility remains high and caution is needed, support from domestic investors and stable fundamentals may help markets consolidate in the near term.

Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities

The Indian rupee has stabilised following a sharp sell-off on Wednesday, bolstered by a revival in risk appetite after US President Trump withdrew his tariff threats against Europe. Despite this recovery, the currency remains susceptible to external shocks, with its stability largely dependent on the easing of geopolitical tensions and the announcement of US - India trade agreements.

From a technical perspective, the spot USDINR pair finds support at 91.10, while facing resistance at the 92.00 psychological mark. The outlook remains bullish as long as the pair continues to trade above the 91.10 level.

January 22, 2026· 16:05 IST

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities

After showing a high volatility at the lows of around 25000 recently, Nifty bounced back decently on Thursday amidst volatility and closed the day higher by 132 points. After opening with an upside gap of 187 points, the market moved up further in the early part of the session. Profit booking has occurred from near the highs of 25400 in the mid part, but the market recovered towards the end.

A small red candle was formed on the daily chart with upper and lower shadow. Technically, this market action indicates a formation of high wave type candle pattern. The formation of high wave type candles in the last two sessions signals heightened volatility in the market. The crucial 200day EMA support has been regained on Thursday and Nifty closed above it.

The overall near-term trend of the market remains weak, but the short-term bounce is unfolding. A sustainable up move above 25500 could confirm near term bottom reversal pattern for the Nifty. On the other side, any weakness from here could drag Nifty down to the recent swing lows of around 24900-25000 levels in the near term

January 22, 2026· 16:01 IST

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities

The index consolidated after a positive start, supported by strong global cues. However, it faced resistance near the 38.20% Fibonacci retracement level, resulting in a decline from the day’s high of 25,435 to 25,168 before closing near the midpoint of the session’s range.

Although the index managed to close above the 200DMA for the second consecutive day, the overall sentiment remains weak, as reflected by the elevated India VIX, which stood at 13.35.

In the short term, the index is likely to remain volatile on Friday. Resistance is placed in the 25,480–25,500 zone, while support is seen around 25,125.

January 22, 2026· 15:59 IST

Gaurav Garg, Lemonn Markets Desk

Indian equity markets ended Thursday with moderate gains after paring early advances, supported by positive global cues and easing geopolitical concerns. The Sensex rose about 0.5 percent and the Nifty gained around 0.5 percent in late trade after both indices surged over 1 percent in early sessions. Sentiment improved following US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal of tariff threats against the EU and his optimistic remarks on a potential India–US trade deal, which encouraged short-covering and risk-taking.

Gains were broad-based, with stocks such as Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Coal India and Adani Ports leading the Nifty50, while select defensives and insurers lagged. Broader markets outperformed, with midcap and smallcap indices rising over 1 percent, snapping recent losing streaks. Supporting factors included firm Asian markets, a softer India VIX indicating reduced volatility, recovery in the rupee, and a decline in gold and silver ETFs as investors rotated away from safe-haven assets.

On the technical front, note that while Nifty faced resistance near the 25,300 zone, consolidation could continue after the formation of a doji near key support levels. A sustained move above 25,300 is seen opening the door for further upside towards the 25,400–25,500 range.

January 22, 2026· 15:57 IST

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments

The domestic market staged a rebound, supported by signs of relief following President Trump’s positive remarks at the Davos meeting regarding Greenland and tariff. Despite this, market sentiments remained cautious amid sustained rupee weakness and continued FII outflows.

The initial set of corporate earnings did little to support current valuation levels. Nevertheless, investors have not ruled out the potential upside from a robust domestic demand environment, which could become more visible in the upcoming round of quarterly earnings announcements. Looking ahead, markets will closely monitor U.S. GDP growth and core inflation data later today, as well as the BoJ policy decision due tomorrow, for further cues.

Sensex Today | FY27 fiscal deficit seen at 4.2%, says OmniScience Capital

OmniScience Capital's budget outlook for 2026 report estimates ~Rs 53.5 trillion budget with 15% capex growth & 4.2% fiscal deficit for FY27. The report highlights that India’s Union Budget has undergone a clear structural transformation over the past decade, with capital expenditure (capex) emerging as the centrepiece of fiscal policy. From FY16, when capex accounted for roughly 20% of total budgetary spending, its share has risen steadily to over 30.6% in FY26, signalling a decisive shift towards asset creation and long-term growth.

While the overall size of the Union Budget has expanded at a healthy pace, the report notes that the composition of expenditure growth is the key differentiator. Capital expenditure has grown at close to a 15% CAGR over the past ten years, materially outpacing revenue expenditure growth which grew at 8.8%. This reflects a sustained policy focus on infrastructure development, productivity enhancement, and crowding-in of private investment, rather than consumption-led fiscal expansion.

NS Ramaswamy, Head of Commodity & CRM, Ventura

Gold enters 2026 with strong momentum and approaching a critical long-term inflection point. Supportive monetary policy backdrop, elevated safe haven demand, trade frictions, and tightening global supplies all reinforces a positive outlook for the precious metal additionally with significant ETF inflows and weaker dollar as central banks increasingly diversify away from US Assets. Pull backs from over brought levels are allocation opportunities.

The global risk sentiment gets a strong boost in reaction to US President Donald Trump's U-turn on Greenland (Trump did a TACO at Davos) and easing geopolitical tensions. He dropped his plans of military action and tariƯ threats on EU members for Greenland’s acquisition. During his appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump pulled back from his threat to slap additional tariƯs on eight European nations and ruled out seizing Greenland by force, but is “seeking immediate negotiations” to discuss its acquisition.

Trump said, he had reached an agreement on a framework for a future deal on Greenland with NATO that would satisfy his desire for a missile defence system and access to critical minerals. Washington and NATO have formed the framework of a “future deal with respect to Greenland, and in fact, the entire Arctic Region”.

This removes the tail risk of a US confrontation with NATO allies and eases trade war fears. The 'Sell America' trade seems to have receded amid hopes that trade conflict with Europe is unlikely to re-escalate.

This has prompted some profit-taking in gold amid overbought conditions and ahead of the crucial US inflation data. USD also gained strength on expectations of the US Federal Reserve to hold the key interest rates till Q1 2026 and possibly until Chair Jerome Powell's tenure ends in May, but the concerns of political interference in the FED’s independence caps USD gains. Possibility of two more rate reductions in 2026 still prevails.

Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk

Shadowfax Technologies’ IPO remained undersubscribed at 0.70x overall as of 12:09 PM on Day 3 (January 22, 2026), despite healthy interest from retail investors. The retail portion was subscribed 1.98x, while QIB (excluding anchor) participation stayed muted at 0.40x and NII at 0.43x, reflecting cautious sentiment among institutional and high-net-worth investors.

The subscription trend indicates strong retail enthusiasm but restrained institutional appetite, likely due to concerns around rich valuation, thin margins, and client concentration, even as the company offers long-term exposure to India’s growing last-mile and quick-commerce logistics space.

Justin Khoo, Senior Market Analyst - APAC, VT Market

Today’s sharp slump in silver and gold ETFs, with some dropping as much as ~21%, reflects an abrupt shift in macro sentiment rather than a fundamental breakdown in precious metals. Prices had recently been bolstered by record demand as geopolitical and trade-war tensions drove safe-haven buying. However, markets pared gains after U.S. President Donald Trump eased tariff threats linked to Greenland, reducing near-term geopolitical risk and strengthening the U.S. dollar — a known headwind for bullion prices.

While spot gold and silver still reflect historically elevated levels, the ETF correction looks like profit-taking and risk-rebalancing as equity markets rally.

With structural drivers such as central-bank accumulation, long-term demand and inflation hedging undiminished, disciplined investors may see this correction as a strategic accumulation zone, but should avoid aggressive short-term speculation given ongoing volatility.

Crude oil prices extended their gains on Wednesday, supported by tight supply conditions following disruptions in Kazakhstan and lower-than-expected exports from Venezuela. The International Energy Agency, in its monthly report, highlighted signs of recovery in global oil demand this year, with surplus inventories likely to narrow more than previously anticipated.

Strong Chinese fourth-quarter GDP and industrial production data further pointed to a revival in demand, lending additional support to crude prices. However, escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and European countries, along with rising U.S. crude inventories, may cap further upside.

We expect crude oil prices to remain volatile in today’s session. Crude oil is having support at $59.80-59.00 and resistance is at $61.40-61.90 in today’s session. In INR crude oil has support at Rs 5,500,-5,440 while resistance at Rs 5,650-5,695.
