Markets traded with volatility on Friday but managed to end in the green amid mixed cues. The Nifty opened lower due to lingering geopolitical concerns and subdued global signals; however, buying in select heavyweight stocks helped the index recover and settle in positive territory as the session progressed. Most sectors participated in the rebound, with energy, metals, and banking emerging as notable gainers following the sharp sell-off in the previous session. Meanwhile, midcap and smallcap indices underperformed, ending flat to marginally lower.
Sentiment during the session was shaped by mixed global developments, including rising crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical tensions, which initially weighed on risk assets. However, improved buying interest in domestic cyclical and heavyweight stocks offset early weakness, indicating that participants were looking to accumulate quality names after recent volatility.
We maintain a cautious stance and recommend closely monitoring global developments in the absence of any fresh domestic triggers. On the index front, sustaining above the 25,400 level is crucial to preserve a positive bias amid ongoing consolidation; a breach below this mark could turn the tone negative. We reiterate our preference for banking, auto, metal, and energy stocks for long positions, while advising against taking short-term positions in the IT space.

The Indian rupee extended its losing streak for a fifth consecutive session, emerging as a laggard among its Asian peers. With domestic forex markets closed on Thursday, the rupee played catch-up, reacting to a resurgent US dollar and mounting geopolitical tensions. The local unit remains under pressure due to sustained capital outflows and robust dollar demand from importers.
Technically, the USDINR spot has staged an upside breakout after a two-week consolidation phase between 90.40 and 90.80. Immediate support for the pair is now seen at 90.80, while resistance is pegged at 91.10 and 91.40.

After witnessing a massive fall on the back of rising geo-political tension on Thursday, Nifty tried to recover from the lows amidst volatility on Friday and closed the day higher by 116 points. After bouncing back from the opening weakness on Friday, the market was not able to sustain above the hurdle of 25650 levels in the mid to later part of the session.
A reasonable positive candle has been formed on the daily chart with upper shadow. This is signaling an attempt of bounce back from the lows. Nifty has failed to show follow-through weakness after a 1or 2 sessions sharp declines in the recent few occasions and Friday's bounce back could be one of these instances. Hence, one may expect some more upside in the short term.
Nifty is currently placed at the key support of around 25400 as per role reversal and a sustainable upmove above the hurdle of 25650-25700 levels could open another round of relief rally in the market.

Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities
Nifty’s modest 0.39% weekly gain hardly reflects the turbulence witnessed through the week. Beneath the seemingly flat closing, markets navigated sharp swings driven by global cues and sector-specific weakness. After a steady surge at the start of the week, Nifty came under intense pressure on Thursday amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which triggered a sharp spike in crude oil prices and rattled investor sentiment. The sudden risk-off mood led to aggressive profit booking across sectors. However, showcasing resilience, the index staged a smart rebound in the final trading session, trimming a large part of its losses. Nifty eventually settled at 25,571, up 0.46% for the day and 0.39% on a week-on-week basis.
IT stocks continued to bleed for the third consecutive week. Concerns around stretched valuations, coupled with rapid strides in AI disrupting traditional growth models, have kept the sector under sustained selling pressure. Technically, Nifty is currently trading below its key short-term moving averages, indicating a phase of sideways consolidation with a cautious undertone. Meanwhile, India VIX surged 6.71% for the second consecutive session, reflecting heightened nervousness and expectations of elevated volatility in the near term.
Among Nifty constituents, Hindalco and NTPC emerged as the top gainers, while Tech Mahindra and Infosys were among the key laggards. Sectorally, Bank Nifty and Nifty Metal led the gains for the day. The broader market closed on a mixed note, with the Nifty Midcap Index rising 0.48%, whereas the Nifty Smallcap Index slipped 0.11%.
Nifty View
Going ahead, the 25,400–25,350 zone is expected to act as immediate support for Nifty. A sustained move below 25,350 could trigger further downside towards 25,150, followed by the 25,000 mark in the near term. On the upside, the zone of 25,750–25,800 is likely to act as an immediate resistance.
Bank Nifty View
Bank Nifty clearly outperformed during the week, closing at a fresh lifetime high on a weekly basis, largely driven by strong traction in frontline PSU banking stocks. The 20-day EMA zone of 60,400–60,500 is expected to provide key support, while the 61,700–61,800 range may act as resistance zone in the short term.

Indian equities rebounded after yesterday’s sharp correction, led by strong buying in large caps as investors favoured their better risk reward over premium valued midcaps. Sentiment improved on clearer trade agreement signals and India’s entry into Pax Silica, which is expected to strengthen supply chain security in AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals.
Banking and metal stocks drove the recovery, while IT lagged. Volatility stayed elevated, with the India VIX spiking even as geopolitical tensions still linger. Softer inflation data from Japan supported expectations of accommodative global policy. Structurally, markets remain constructive, though near term moves are likely to stay flow driven amid global uncertainties, keeping the buy on dips, sell on rallies trend intact.

Gold and silver traded higher on 20 February as renewed safe-haven demand supported prices amid global uncertainty. MCX gold moved back above the ₹1.55 lakh per 10g mark, while silver gained over 1% to trade near ₹2.44–2.45 lakh/kg. The uptick comes after recent consolidation, with buyers stepping in on dips following sharp volatility earlier this month.
Global cues, including geopolitical tensions and expectations around US interest rates, continue to drive near-term sentiment. Despite intermittent corrections, the broader trend for precious metals remains supportive. Investors are viewing current moves as part of a consolidation phase rather than a reversal.

Oil refiners made big gains in Q3 on falling/low crude prices. Now with spiking crude thanks to the US-Iran standoff, the situation has reversed. The margins of oil refiners will be impacted. The beneficiaries will be the upstream companies like ONGC and Oil India.
The trend will remain volatile since the West Asian situation can change quickly. Crude will decline sharply in the event of a deal between India and the U.S.

Hareesh V, Head of Commodity Research, Geojit Investments
Rising US–Iran tensions have already driven investors toward bullion, pushing gold close to the USD 5,000 mark as safe haven demand strengthens. Investors typically turn to gold and silver during geopolitical conflicts because these metals preserve value, reduce exposure to market volatility, and serve as trusted hedges when currencies and financial markets face uncertainty.
Although a stronger dollar and shifting interest rate expectations may temporarily cap sharp gains, persistent or escalating tensions are likely to keep risk averse flows elevated, potentially supporting a further rise in gold and silver prices in the coming days.
