SpiceJet more than doubles market share amid capacity ramp-up

Budget carrier SpiceJet more than doubled its domestic market share to 4.3% in December 2025 from 1.9% in September, signalling a sharp operational rebound after months of capacity constraints.

The improvement came alongside a 56% expansion in capacity during the October–December quarter (Q3), aided by the induction of 16 aircraft. The airline said the additional aircraft enabled a wider network and more frequent services across key domestic routes.

SpiceJet also reported a significant jump in Available Seat Kilometres (ASKMs) — a measure of passenger-carrying capacity — which rose from about 55 crore in the previous quarter to 105 crore in Q3. The airline said it aims to more than double capacity over the course of the year, targeting 220 crore ASKMs by Winter 2026 and operating more than 300 daily flights.

To support the expansion, the carrier is working towards increasing its fleet size to around 60 aircraft. The plan includes a combination of wet and damp leases, along with the phased return of previously grounded aircraft. SpiceJet has also signed a memorandum of understanding for the induction of 10 additional aircraft.

Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer at SpiceJet, said the increase in market share reflects the airline’s efforts to rebuild capacity and restore its network presence. He added that the company would focus on strengthening connectivity and improving operational reliability as it scales up.

The latest figures mark a notable turnaround for the airline, which had faced operational and financial headwinds in recent quarters.
