Abhinav Tiwari Research Analyst at Bonanza
Today, the Indian equity markets ended sharply lower as global uncertainty increased. The Nifty 50 closed near 25,450, down about 1.4%, while the Sensex ended around 82,500, falling roughly 1.5%. Market breadth was weak, with decliners outnumbering gainers, indicating widespread selling pressure.
Global risk sentiment deteriorated due to rising geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran. Concerns around potential disruptions to oil supply kept crude prices elevated, which is negative for oil importing countries like India. This led investors to become cautious about inflation, macros and near term earnings visibility. At the same time, domestic markets were trading close to record highs in recent sessions, prompting profit booking.
While overall sentiment remained weak, ONGC showed relative resilience during the session. Hindustan Unilever announced a Rs 2,000 cr capex plan over two years to expand capacity in premium Beauty & Wellbeing and Home Care segments. The move is structurally positive and supports its premiumisation and sustainability strategy, though broader market pressure limited near term stock reaction.
In the near term, volatility may remain high due to geopolitical risks and firm crude prices. However, strong domestic fundamentals suggest that market corrections are likely to be buying opportunities for long term investors rather than signs of a trend reversal.

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities
Nifty witnessed bloodbath on Thursday on the back of rising geo-political tension between US and Iran and the market tanked down by 365 points. After opening on a positive note, the market was not able to sustain near 25900 levels and started to show declines from the highs. The weakness got intensified in the mid-later part of the session and Nifty closed near the lows.
A long-range bear candle has been formed on the daily chart (approx. 500 points high low range) that closed near the swing low of 16th Feb. Technically, this market action indicates a formation of 'Bearish Engulfing' pattern and also a faster retracement of previous four sessions range on the downside in single session. This is not a good sign.
The short term trend of Nifty has reversed down sharply on Thursday after a minor bounce back. A slide below 25400 could drag Nifty down to the next support of 25200-25100 levels in the near term.

Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities
On Thursday, the Nifty index opened with a minor gap-up, but the optimism was short-lived. The benchmark quickly lost momentum and slipped into a persistent downtrend, forming a clear pattern of lower tops and lower bottoms throughout the session. Selling pressure intensified as the day progressed, dragging the index to a close at 25454, marking a sharp decline of 1.41%.
What makes the day’s move particularly significant is the extent of the correction. The intraday slide almost completely wiped-out gains accumulated over the previous three trading sessions, culminating in the formation of a large bearish candle on the daily chart. Adding to the technical weakness, Nifty also breached key short-term and medium-term supports by decisively slipping below its 20 day, 50 day and 100 day EMA levels—an indication that bearish sentiment has strengthened in the near term.
The pressure in equities was mirrored in volatility gauges as well. The India VIX jumped over 10%, reflecting heightened nervousness among traders and signalling the possibility of wider market swings ahead.
Among Nifty constituents, only a handful managed to stay afloat. ONGC and HDFC Life emerged as the top gainers. On the flip side, IndiGo and UltraTech Cement were among the biggest laggards. Sectorally, the pain was widespread as all major indices ended in the red. The sharpest cuts were seen in Nifty Realty, Nifty Media and Nifty Auto, indicating broad-based selling pressure rather than sector-specific weakness.
The weakness wasn’t limited to the frontline index. The broader market mirrored the decline, with Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 registering steep corrections of their own. Notably, both indices fell below their crucial moving averages, reinforcing the risk-off sentiment across the market spectrum.
Market breadth also turned decisively negative. The Advance/Decline ratio was heavily skewed towards declining stocks, showcasing the dominance of sellers. Out of the Nifty 500 universe, as many as 432 stocks closed lower, pointing to widespread profit-taking and a lack of buying conviction.
Nifty View
Going ahead, for Nifty, the zone of 25350-25300 will act as immediate support for the index. Any sustainable move below 25300 will lead to further correction up to the 25150, followed by the 25000 level in the short term. While, on the upside, the 500-day EMA zone of 25550-25600 will act as an immediate hurdle for the index.
Bank Nifty View
The Bank Nifty index also came under heavy selling pressure on Thursday, giving up the strong outperformance it had displayed against the frontline indices over the past few sessions. The banking gauge not only corrected sharply but also completely engulfed the previous two days of gains, resulting in the formation of a large bearish candle on the daily chart. This price action indicates a clear shift in momentum and suggests that bulls have temporarily lost control after a strong upward stretch.
Looking ahead, the 20 day EMA placed between 60400-60300 is expected to act as a key support zone for the index. A breakdown below this region could accelerate the downside, exposing the index to further declines in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 61100–61200 is likely to serve as a crucial resistance area.

The bears took charge of the Indian market as rising geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran unsettled global sentiment leading to a broad based sell-off. Brent crude surged to its YTD high, exacerbating inflationary concerns and triggering heightened market volatility on fear of bottlenecking of Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time uncertainty surrounding the US Fed’s rate-cut trajectory and continued weakness in the INR impacted the domestic market. Sell-off intensified due to low FII participation because of Lunar New Year holiday across key Asian markets and a non-settlement day on account of a regional banking holiday in India.

Gold and silver remained under pressure on 19 February as investors stayed cautious amid a stronger dollar and shifting expectations around US interest-rate cuts. MCX gold traded near the ₹1.55–1.56 lakh per 10g zone, while silver hovered around ₹2.43–2.45 lakh/kg after recent sharp swings.
Global cues continue to drive sentiment, with mixed US macro data and Fed commentary keeping bullion volatile. Profit-booking after last year’s strong rally is still visible, though downside is being cushioned by safe-haven demand and central bank buying.
Overall, the current weakness is being seen as consolidation rather than a trend reversal. Investors are advised to stagger fresh positions and maintain disciplined risk management in choppy conditions.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
Post listing, Kwality Wall's has faced valuation pressure, primarily due to subdued sentiment surrounding the ongoing open offer at an ~29% discount to the listed price, as well as trading restrictions following KWIL’s placement in the T-Group.
Additionally, sequential margin pressures across peers and the inherently seasonal nature of the ice cream business have weighed on near-term performance. The open offer by Magnum Ice Cream Company is part of Unilever’s larger plan to carve out and build a standalone global ice cream platform.
While near-term headwinds and competitive intensity remain, the company’s focused category presence, strong global parentage, established brand equity, and scalable operating model position it well for sustained growth. These factors may help support a more favourable valuation trajectory over the medium to long term.

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments
After a quiet first half of the month the approach of supertrend support encouraged buyers to regroup prompting a narrowing range breakout, followed by two days of large upmoves. Now, having stretched to the vicinity of January peaks, buyers appear to be hesitant, raising the possibility of a sideways move. That said, momentum indicators remain strong, suggesting that pull back attempts are likely to be bought into.
Downside marker may be placed near 3375, the 50% fibo of the February low-high move.
