Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets remained under pressure and extended their losing streak for the sixth straight session. The tone was weak from the outset and worsened as the day progressed. Eventually, the Nifty closed near the day’s low at 24,654.70, down 0.95%. The decline was broad-based, with pharma and IT stocks leading the fall following U.S. tariff announcements on branded drugs. The broader indices bore the brunt of the sell-off, slipping nearly 2% each.

The announcement of tariffs on branded drugs weighed heavily on sentiment, adding to recent concerns over visa policy changes. IT counters were further dragged by weak guidance from global peers, while persistent FII outflows and a weak rupee amplified the pressure.

On the technical front, sustained weakness in heavyweights has accelerated the index’s decline over the past two sessions, with the Nifty now approaching its key support near the 200 DEMA around 24,400. Meanwhile, the sharp correction in mid- and small-cap stocks has further dampened market sentiment. Given this backdrop, we recommend adopting a cautious approach—focusing on fundamentally strong stocks while avoiding aggressive directional bets until clearer signals emerge.

Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical Research and Derivatives at SBI Securities

Indian benchmark indices opened with a notable gap down, extended its weakness and closed even lower, reflecting strong selling pressure and cautious sentiment.

Two key factors weighed on the market mood today: First, President Trump’s announcement of 100% levy on branded and patented drugs, significantly impacted Indian pharma stocks, with the sector leading the declines. Second, signals of a patchy demand recovery from Accenture’s recent quarterly results triggered sharp losses in IT stocks.

Additionally, the Indian rupee is hovering near the record lows (88.70 at Friday’s close) despite a weakening US dollar. Relentless foreign outflows, higher US tariffs, visa fee hikes and persistent trade concerns have collectively fuelled the decline.

These developments weakened overall sentiment, resulting in Nifty breaking below key support zones and extending its losing streak for the sixth consecutive day.

In the sectoral space, all the sectors ended in the red. Pharma and IT Index were the top two sectoral losers, with both ending lower in the range of 2-2.5%. LT & Tata Motors were the top gainers, while Indusind Bank and M&M emerged as the top two losers.

Talking about the broader markets, both Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100, significantly underperformed the frontline indices. The Midcap 100 Index & Small cap 100 Index ended 2.05% and 2.26% lower respectively. The advance-decline ratio was heavily skewed in the favour of the bears with 459 stocks out of the Nifty 500 closing in the red, indicating selling across the board and weakening market breadth.

Nifty View

Nifty opened lower and extended its fall during the intraday session, closing at 24,655, down 0.95%. On the daily chart, it formed a big body bearish candle, indicating strong presence of sellers throughout the day over the buyers.

The index broke below its 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level (24807) of the prior up move from 24,405 to 25,449 and its 100-day EMA (24,747), indicating breach of a key support zone. On the weekly chart, Nifty formed a sizeable bearish candle and ended its three-week streak of green closes.

The RSI is trending downwards, settling just below the 40 level, which suggests weakening momentum and potential further downside. The ADX indicator shows the DI- line crossing above DI+ on the daily chart, signalling sellers gaining control over buyers. Additionally, Nifty broke below the midline of the Bollinger Bands, indicating increased bearish momentum and a shift toward the lower band, often seen as a sign of selling pressure building up.

Looking at key levels, the 24,450–24,500 zone will act as a crucial support for the Index. If the index slips below the level of 24,450, it will lead to further correction upto the 24,200 level. While, on the upside, the zone of 24,850-24,900 will act as a crucial resistance for the Index.

Bank Nifty View

Bank Nifty opened lower and consolidated in a range briefly before breaking down to close at 54,389, down 1.22%. On the daily chart, it broke below its 100-day EMA level of 54,901 and extended its fall for the third consecutive day, indicating sustained bearish momentum.

On the weekly chart, Bank Nifty formed a sizeable bearish candle, taking resistance around the 50% Fibonacci retracement zone (55,600-55,650) of its prior down move from 57,628 to 53,562. This resistance zone also coincided with the midline of the Bollinger Bands, where the price pulled back from the lower band up to the midline before falling again, highlighting the dominance of sellers.

The ADX has been falling, which indicates weakening trend strength and possible reduction in market momentum, suggesting the current move may lose steam. Overall, Bank Nifty’s price action signals bearish control with critical resistances holding firm at key technical levels.

Looking at key levels, the 54,100–54,000 zone will act as a crucial support for the Index. If the index slips below the level of 54,000, it will lead to further correction upto the 53,500 level. While, on the upside, the 100-day EMA zone of 54,900-55,000 will act as a crucial resistance for the Index.

Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities

Risk off sentiment continued in equity markets, as markets extended losing streak for sixth straight session on across-the-board selling amid Trump's decision to impose 100% tariff on branded and patented drugs that further soured investors' sentiment.

The market is already reeling under multiple pain-points like strong FII selling, US-India trade uncertainty, depreciating rupee and bullion's rising appeal, which is making investors jittery.

September 26, 2025· 15:47 IST

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments

The Indian market experienced a bloodbath, mirroring the rout across Asian markets. Investor sentiment was rattled by a fresh wave of tariffs targeting the pharmaceuticals, dragging pharma stocks deep into the red.

Meanwhile, Accenture’s weaker guidance and job cuts highlighted slowing IT spending, with AI-driven growth failing to meet expectations, prompting a broad sell-off in tech shares. Investors remain cautious, with a near-term focus on domestic investment and consumption amid global uncertainty.

September 26, 2025· 15:45 IST

Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities

The Indian Rupee has stabilized after a volatile week, with the consolidation phase being driven by central bank intervention to meet the month-end dollar demand. While this action provided a much-need pause, the rupee is not yet out of the woods and remains vulnerable to lingering concerns over US trade tariffs.

In the near term, we see resistance for spot USDINR at 88.80 and firm support at 88.20.

Nitant Darekar Research Analyst at Bonanza

President Trump's announcement of 100% tariffs on branded and patented pharmaceutical imports from October 1st poses significant risks to India's pharmaceutical sector. The US accounts for 31% of India's $27.9 billion pharma exports. Major Indian generic companies like Dr Reddy's, Sun Pharma, and Aurobindo face serious margin pressure. They generally work with very narrow margins of 8-15% in the competitive US generics market.

Pricing pressure from pharmacy benefit managers and consolidated buyers already limits profitability. These companies face a binary choice: absorb potentially devastating tariff costs and operate at losses or pass through price increases to US consumers and insurers, risking substantial market share erosion to competitors with domestic manufacturing capabilities.

While tariffs primarily target branded drugs, uncertainty persists over complex generics inclusion. Companies with established US manufacturing facilities may gain competitive advantages, while innovator Wockhardt faces heightened barriers despite advancing six QIDP-designated anti-infective drugs through Phase III trials, lacking US facilities to capitalize on its differentiated pipeline in America's lucrative pharmaceutical market.
