Market Close | Sensex, Nifty end lower
The Indian benchmark indices started the week on a negative note, extending the fall on third consecutive session on December 29 amid broad-based selling due to persistent foreign fund outflows, and geopolitical developments.

Markets edged lower and slipped nearly 0.4%, extending Friday’s decline. After a subdued start, the Nifty gradually drifted lower through the session and finally settled near the day’s low at 25,942.10. Sectoral performance largely mirrored the benchmark, with most indices closing in the red. IT, realty and auto were among the top laggards, while the broader markets also came under pressure, declining in the range of 0.6% to 0.8%.
Market sentiment continues to be guided by global cues and stock-specific developments. Trading volumes remained light, with participants preferring selective exposure rather than broad-based positions in the absence of any major triggers.
We continue to maintain our consolidation view on the index, though the scheduled monthly expiry could lead to some intraday volatility. Despite this, trading opportunities remain available across sectors. Participants are advised to stay selective, align trades with sectors showing relatively higher strength and keep position sizes in check until a clearer trend emerges.

The benchmark indices continued profit booking at higher levels. The Nifty ended 100 points lower, while the Sensex was down by 345 points. Among sectors, the Media Index gained 0.75 percent, whereas the Consumer Index lost the most, shedding nearly 1 percent.
Technically, after a muted open, the market slipped below the 26,000/85,000 mark, and post-breakdown, intraday selling pressure increased. A bearish candle on daily charts and a lower top formation on intraday charts indicate further weakness from the current levels.
We believe that 26,000/85,000 or the 20-day SMA will be the key resistance zone for day traders. As long as the market trades below this level, weak sentiment is likely to continue. On the downside, it could slip to 25,850–25,800 / 84,400–84,200. On the flip side, above 26,000/85,000, the market could bounce back up to 26,100/85,300. Further upside may also continue, which could lift the index to 26,150/85,500.

Weakness amidst range bound movement continued in the market for the third consecutive sessions on Monday and Nifty closed the day lower by 100 points. After opening on a positive note, Nifty failed to sustain the opening gains and started to slide down gradually for better part of the session. There was a minor volatility towards the end and Nifty closed near the lows.
A long bear candle was formed on the daily chart which is indicating a downward correction in the market over the last 3-4 sessions. We observe bullish chart formation like higher tops and bottoms on the daily chart since mid part of this month and present weakness could be in line with the new higher bottom formation. The new higher bottom reversal pattern needs to be confirmed.
The short term trend of the market continues to be weak amidst choppy movement. Nifty is expected to find support around 25850-25800 levels in the short term before bouncing back again from the lows. Immediate resistance is placed at 26100.

The market appears short on catalysts for further upside, with investors largely in holiday mode, signalling a potential consolidation phase in the near term. While the outlook for 2026 remains constructive, attention is expected to shift toward upcoming Q3 earnings and clarity on the U.S. trade agreement.
In an environment of global trade anxiety and a weakening rupee, investors are likely to favour large-cap stocks for their relative safety and stronger earnings visibility.

Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities
The benchmark Nifty index extended its losing streak for the third straight session, closing in the red on Monday. Importantly, the index slipped below its 20 day EMA, signalling a weakening of near-term momentum. The 14-period daily RSI has also triggered a bearish crossover, reinforcing the negative sentiment. However, it is worth noting that the RSI has continued to oscillate within a sideways band for the past 14 trading sessions, indicating an absence of clear directional strength.
Within the Nifty constituents, Tata Steel and Tata Consumer Products emerged as the top gainers, showcasing relative resilience amid the broader weakness. On the other hand, Adani Ports and HCL Technologies were among the biggest laggards for the day, dragging the index lower. Sectorally, Nifty Media and Nifty FMCG indices outperformed, posting gains despite market pressures. In contrast, Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty IT witnessed notable selling pressure and were the top sectoral losers.
The broader market mirrored the cautious mood, with both Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Small Cap 100 closing negatively and underperforming the frontline indices. Market breadth remained weak, reflected in the advance decline ratio, which tilted sharply in favour of the bears. Out of the Nifty 500 universe, as many as 329 stocks ended lower, highlighting broad-based profit booking.
Nifty View
Going ahead, for Nifty, the 50-day EMA zone of 25850-25800 will act as important support. Any sustainable move below the 25800 will lead to further correction up to the 25650 level. On the upside, the zone of 26070-26100 will act as a crucial hurdle.
Bank Nifty View
The banking benchmark index, Bank Nifty, ended on a negative note for the fourth consecutive trading session. Despite the ongoing weakness, the index has been consolidating in a relatively tight band over the last couple of sessions, oscillating between the 59478 and 58712 levels. This narrow-range movement signals indecision among market participants as they await a clear directional trigger.
Going ahead, the 50-day EMA zone of 58600-58500 will act as immediate support for the index. Any sustainable move below 58500 will lead to further correction up to 58000 in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 59100-59200 will act as an important hurdle for the index.

The index witnessed profit booking during the session, leading to a decline in the market. On the derivatives front, 26,000 PE put writers unwound their positions as the index slipped below this level.
The trend has weakened as the index moved below the 21 EMA; additionally, it has retraced more than 50% of the previous rise, casting doubt over the sustainability of the recent rally.
On the downside, support is placed at 25,900, while on the upside, the 26,000 level is likely to act as the initial resistance.
