Closing Bell: Nifty above 25,700, Sensex gains 480 pts; auto, FMCG, PSU Banks shine

Indian equity indices ended on strong note with Nifty above 25,700 on February 23. At close, the Sensex was up 479.95 points or 0.58 percent at 83,294.66, and the Nifty was up 141.75 points or 0.55 percent at 25,713.

Today, the benchmark indices continued their positive momentum, with the Nifty ending 141 points higher while the Sensex was up by 478 points. Among sectors, the PSU Bank index outperformed, rallying 1.35 percent, whereas the IT index lost the most, shedding over 1.5 percent. Technically, after a strong open, the market witnessed range-bound activity throughout the day. On the lower side, it took support near the 20-day SMA (Simple Moving Average) or 25,600/83000, while 25,800/83600 remains the crucial resistance zone for short-term traders.

We believe that the 20-day SMA or 25,600/83000 will act as an immediate reference point for day traders. As long as the market is trading above this level, the bullish momentum is likely to continue. On the higher side, 25,800/83600 would be the key resistance area for the bulls. A successful breakout of 25,800/83600 could push the market up to 25,950–26,000/84000-84200.

On the flip side, below 25,600/83000, sentiment could change. If the market falls below this level, it is likely to retest the levels of 25,500–25,450/82700-82500.

The Nifty index opened the week on a positive footing, beginning Monday’s session with an upside gap and extending gains to an intraday high of 25771. However, the early strength quickly faded as traders turned cautious after US President Donald Trump announced a fresh 15% tariff, following the US Supreme Court’s move to strike down earlier duties imposed on several major trading partners. This shift in global trade sentiment triggered profit booking at higher levels, pulling the index off its day’s peak. Despite the intraday volatility, Nifty managed to end the session at 25719, up 0.58%, forming a small bodied candle with shadows on both sides, signalling indecision.

On the technical front, the index continues to hover around its key moving averages. The recent sideways movement has kept these averages largely flat, reflecting a lack of clear directional momentum. Indicators also remain neutral, suggesting that the market is likely to stay range bound in the near term unless a strong catalyst emerges. Among index constituents, Adani Ports and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories emerged as the top gainers, while Hindalco and Wipro were among the notable laggards.

Sectoral trends were mixed, highlighting rotational activity across the market. Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Financial Services outperformed, supported by steady buying interest, whereas Nifty Chemical and Nifty IT ended lower amid pressure in global cyclicals and technology stocks. This divergence indicates selective participation and a risk on tone tilted more toward financials.

The broader market also delivered a mixed performance, with Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 closing on a divergent note. The market breadth, however, leaned slightly positive as the advance decline ratio favoured advancers. Within the Nifty 500 universe, 294 stocks closed in the green.

Nifty View

Going ahead, for Nifty, the zone of 25800-25830 will act as immediate hurdle for the index. Any sustainable move above 25830 will lead to sharp upside rally upto the 26000 level. On the downside, the zone of 25600-25570 will act as crucial support for the index.

Bank Nifty View

The Bank Nifty index hit an intraday high of 61517 before encountering profit booking, trimming part of its early gains. Despite the intraday volatility, the index managed to close at 61264, up 0.15%. The daily chart pattern shows a bullish candle with a long upper shadow, indicating underlying buying support but also highlighting selling pressure at higher levels.

Going ahead, the region of 61500–61600 will act as a major hurdle for the index. A sustained breakout above 61600 could unleash strong upside momentum toward 62200, and further toward 62600. On the flip side, immediate support lies in the 60800–60700 zone; holding above this zone will keep the short term structure positive, while a breakdown below it may trigger further downside pressure.

The Indian indices opened on a positive note today reacting positively towards the news of the Supreme Court ruling of Trump tariff but later corrected from the top factoring the other global uncertainties.

For now, Trump has imposed a common 15% tariff on all the countries and the same will be applicable for 150 days only and post that, Congress will have to pass legislation to decide if the tariff is to remain in place or be extended beyond that period. The Nifty closed at 25,713 (up 0.55%) and Sensex closed at 83,294.66 (up 0.57%).

The other major global uncertainties affecting the market were the below estimate US GDP growth, further details on tariffs and the US-Iran tussle. The IT sector was impacted negatively due to below estimate US GDP data as the economy grew at 1.4% (annualized) which was much below the expectations. For the full year 2025, US economy grew at 2.2% pace down from 2.8% increase in 2024.

The markets will keep an eye on the US-Iran tussle which will affect the oil prices thereby impacting the margins of Upstream company and also affecting Rupee and the fiscal deficit of India.

Sectoral wise, IT and Metals lagged while financial service, FMCG and auto were the gainers. On the stock specific front, Adani Ports, Kotak Bank, HDFC Life and Dr Reddy were the top gainers while Hindalco, Wipro and Infosys were the top losers.

One of the talking points of the day was the Rs.590 crore fraud of IDFC First bank at its Chandigarh branch. Even though the MD & CEO V. Vaidyanathan described the fraud as an isolated case, the stock opened gap down making a low of Rs.66.8 (down 20%) and later closed at Rs.70.04 (down ~16%).

On the domestic front, the market will watch the Q3FY26 GDP number which will be released on Friday, 27 February 2026.

Following a gap-up start, the index retraced and slipped back below the 50DMA due to a lack of buying interest at higher levels. A flow of contradictory news kept the index confined roughly within the band of the 21EMA (25641) and the 50DMA (25737).

India VIX remained elevated, while the index continued to hold above the 200DMA. The daily RSI remained indecisive despite a positive crossover. In the short term, the index may remain sideways unless it moves above 25750 or falls below 25600.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling against Trump’s reciprocal tariff policy was welcomed by domestic markets. Investors are awaiting more clarity on Trump’s revised strategy and the scope of renegotiations by other nations.

A weaker U.S. dollar and declining 10 year Treasury yields may add a near term caution in the global market. Sectorally, the IT index faced pressure from unresolved concerns over AI driven disruption. Nonetheless, investors favored domestic themes, with banks, power, FMCG, and consumer discretionary stocks gaining traction on expectations of resilient demand and economic recovery.

Indian rupee ended higher at 90.88 per dollar on Monday against Friday's close of 90.98.

Among sectors Information Technology shed 1.4 percent, metal down 0.2 percent, while PSU Bank index added 1.3 percent, while pharma, oil & gas, infra, FMCG, auto added 0.5 percent each.

The Nifty midcap index was down 0.4 percent and smallcap index was up 0.3 percent.

Container Corporation of India was quoting at Rs 506.15, up Rs 3.25, or 0.65 percent.

It has touched an intraday high of Rs 512 and an intraday low of Rs 503.75.

NBCC (India) has received work order of Rs 76.27 crore for construction of Academic building, Hostel building and other infrastructure facilities including external development works for Dharanidhar University, Keonjhar, Odisha.

NBCC (India) was quoting at Rs 95.35, up Rs 0.45, or 0.47 percent.

It has touched an intraday high of Rs 96.33 and an intraday low of Rs 94.20.

Infosys was quoting at Rs 1,325.60, down Rs 27.15, or 2.01 percent.

It has touched an intraday high of Rs 1,354 and an intraday low of Rs 1,318.55.

It was trading with volumes of 515,816 shares, compared to its five day average of 1,001,311 shares, a decrease of -48.49 percent.

In the previous trading session, the share closed down 1.23 percent or Rs 16.85 at Rs 1,352.75.

The share touched a 52-week high of Rs 1,809.80 and a 52-week low of Rs 1,281.55 on 24 February, 2025 and 13 February, 2026, respectively.

Currently, the stock is trading 26.75 percent below its 52-week high and 3.44 percent above its 52-week low.

Market capitalisation stands at Rs 537,487.69 crore.

Gold and silver prices extended their rally on 23 February 2026, with bullion catching fresh safe-haven demand amid rising global uncertainty. MCX gold surged nearly 2%, trading around ₹1.60 lakh per 10 g, while silver climbed about 6%, reclaiming levels near ₹2.68 lakh per kg after recent volatility.

The uptick was supported by weakness in the US dollar and elevated risk sentiment following trade policy developments and geopolitical jitters, strengthening demand for traditional hedges. Spot gold also reached multi-week highs on international markets, underscoring the broader bullish tone.

Despite recent sharp swings earlier in February, current price action suggests investors are responding to macro triggers rather than a structural shift in trend. Near term, metals may remain sensitive to global cues including currency movements and policy expectations. Volatility is likely to persist, and traders are advised to manage risk as bullion consolidates within its broader corrective phase.

The latest surge in crude prices is a textbook reminder of how quickly the geopolitical risk premium can reprice when supply routes are threatened. Escalating US-Iran tensions and fears of disruption around the Strait of Hormuz have pushed Brent to multi-month highs, as markets reevaluate the risk of a sustained supply shock. The US Supreme Court’s tariff ruling adds another layer of uncertainty to global trade, amplifying risk premiums across commodities.

For India and other oil-importing economies, this raises the prospect of renewed input cost pressures, stickier inflation, and narrower policy space. From a credit rating perspective, the immediate focus is on fuel-intensive sectors such as airlines, road transport, and chemicals, and on sovereigns with large energy import bills, where a prolonged spike in crude could weaken external balances, compress margins, and incrementally weigh on credit profiles.

The company has been declared lowest bidder by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation (HPPCL) for construction of Renukaji Dam Project (PKG 1) valued at Rs 910.08 crore.

Patel Engineering Company was quoting at Rs 27.88, up Rs 0.65, or 2.39 percent.

It has touched an intraday high of Rs 28.55 and an intraday low of Rs 26.69.

It was trading with volumes of 555,641 shares, compared to its five day average of 286,147 shares, an increase of 94.18 percent.

The Sensex was up 421.71 points or 0.51 percent at 83,236.42, and the Nifty was up 123.90 points or 0.48 percent at 25,695.15. About 1718 shares advanced, 2228 shares declined, and 147 shares unchanged.

Mini Diamonds (India) has secured yet another significant domestic order of Rs 12 crores from a Mumbai based client.

The company has received a new significant purchase order for the supply of lab-grown polished diamonds.

Mini Diamonds (India) was quoting at Rs 23.43, up Rs 0.89, or 3.95 percent. It has touched an intraday high of Rs 24.40 and an intraday low of Rs 22.20. It was trading with volumes of 68,126 shares, compared to its five day average of 44,039 shares, an increase of 54.70 percent.

IT stocks extended losses for a fourth straight session on February 23, with the Nifty IT index trading about 1.3-1.5 percent lower around 31,576 in late morning trade. Heavyweights Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Wipro and LTIMindtree declined up to 2 percent. The decline followed Jefferies downgrading six IT stocks, warning that artificial intelligence could structurally shift the business mix towards consulting and implementation while shrinking traditional managed services.

Abhishek Bhandari of Nomura India said artificial intelligence could pose a threat to the entire IT/ITeS segment, as the industry faces structural changes in its operating model. Speaking on CNBC-TV18, he noted that traditional annual deflation of 4-5 percent has now widened to 6-7 percent amid AI adoption, while contract tenures have shortened to around three years from the typical five-year cycle. He added that AI may compress managed services but expand consulting and implementation opportunities, and that IT players able to pivot effectively in an AI-driven environment could emerge as long-term winners. He also said many GCCs are increasingly being set up for innovation rather than just cost arbitrage.

Olectra Greentech said it has received an order worth Rs 1,800 crore from the Telangana government for the supply of 1,085 buses. The stock was trading at Rs 1,041.5, up about 2.7 percent in intraday trade.

Gold prices have risen amid Trump’s tariff turmoil and uncertainty surrounding their legality. Even if the Supreme Court views the tariffs as invalid, ongoing trade tensions may still pressure the US dollar and support bullion.

Beyond tariffs, factors such as central bank buying, expectations of lower US interest rates, persistent geopolitical risks, and slower global growth could continue to underpin gold in the long run, keeping its overall outlook constructive.

The bank reported unauthorized and fraudulent activities linked to Haryana government accounts worth Rs 590 crore at a branch in Chandigarh. It has initiated an investigation, and the suspected employees have been placed under suspension.

The bank has appointed KPMG to conduct an independent forensic audit in this matter.

Godrej Properties has entered into a joint development agreement to develop an 18-acre land parcel in Thane, Mumbai. The land parcel is located in an established micro-market of Thane, with excellent connectivity to both existing and upcoming infrastructure, including the Thane–Wadala Metro and the Thane–Borivali twin-tube tunnel.

The proposed development will be a largely residential project with an estimated revenue potential of over Rs 7,500 crore.

Gold’s renewed upswing after a healthy correction reflects a rebuilding of the geopolitical risk premium. Escalating US-Iran tensions and fresh uncertainty around US trade policy, mainly driven by the Supreme Court’s 6–3 ruling on Trump’s tariff framework and the president’s push for a new global levy, are pushing investors back toward safe havens. In this backdrop, gold is once again acting as insurance against tail risks in geopolitics and trade.

From a credit rating perspective, the transmission is clearest in export-oriented manufacturers, shipping and logistics, and sectors like retail and pharma, where volatility in tariffs and currencies can squeeze margins. Banks and NBFCs with concentrated exposure to these segments may face modest asset quality pressures if volatility persists, while gold backed products should remain relatively resilient as long as the underlying collateral quality stays intact.

In the previous trading session, the share closed down 1.53 percent or Rs 76.05 at Rs 4,887.95.

The share touched a 52-week high of Rs 6,430 and a 52-week low of Rs 3,841.05 on 19 January, 2026 and 07 April, 2025, respectively. Currently, the stock is trading 24.91 percent below its 52-week high and 25.7 percent above its 52-week low. Market capitalisation stands at Rs 143,149.94 crore.

The Sensex was up 259.74 points or 0.31 percent at 83,074.45, and the Nifty was up 70.00 points or 0.27 percent at 25,641.25. About 1761 shares advanced, 2070 shares declined, and 171 shares unchanged.

The company’s total volume in January stood at 63,400 TEUs, growing 8 percent year-on-year but declining 5 percent month-on-month.

Allcargo Terminals was quoting at Rs 25.76, up Rs 0.27, or 1.06 percent.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone through its subsidiary Adani Gangavaram Port (AGPL), has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NMDC and Vale S.A. (Brazil).

Adani Ports has raised Rs 1,000 crore by allotment of 1,00,000 Rated, Listed, Secured, Redeemable, Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) of the face value of Rs 1,00,000 each on private placement basis for tenure of 5 years.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone was quoting at Rs 1,548.65, up Rs 37.20, or 2.46 percent. It has touched an intraday high of Rs 1,564.10 and an intraday low of Rs 1,511.45. It was trading with volumes of 146,452 shares, compared to its five day average of 111,684 shares, an increase of 31.13 percent.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and ServiceNow, the AI control tower for business reinvention, have signed a multi-year partnership to help enterprises speed up AI adoption across their businesses and functions.
