The Indian equity market recorded another day of losses, extending the corrective leg. On the daily chart, the index has fallen further below the 100 EMA, confirming a deeper bearish trend. The RSI is in a bearish crossover, indicating sustained weakness.
In the short term, the trend may remain weak, potentially dragging Nifty towards the 200 DMA placed at 24,071. On the lower end, support is placed at 24,400/24,150, while on the higher end, resistance is seen at 24,650. A “sell on rise” strategy remains preferable as long as the index stays below 24,850.

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking
Markets began the new derivatives series on a muted note, extending the prevailing corrective phase. After an initial uptick, the Nifty traded in a narrow range for most of the session; however, selling pressure in select heavyweights during the closing hours dragged the index lower. Consequently, it settled near the day’s low at 24,426.85, down 0.30%. Sector-wise, barring FMCG, all major sectors ended in the red, with realty, IT, and auto leading the decline. The broader indices also mirrored this trend, losing nearly half a percent each.
The ongoing decline appears to be more sentiment-driven in the absence of fresh positive triggers. Notably, the Nifty is now approaching a critical support zone at 24,250–24,350. Meanwhile, the banking index has almost tested its major support around the 200 DEMA at 53,600, which could prompt some pause or even a rebound. That said, participants should continue to adopt a cautious approach, with greater emphasis on risk management, until there are clear signs of a consolidation.

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities
The downside momentum continued in the market on Friday and Nifty closed the day lower by 74 points amidst choppy movement. After opening on a weak note, the market made an attempt to bounce back in the early to mid-part of the session. The selling pressure has emerged towards the end and the markets closed at the lows.
A small negative candle was formed on the daily chart with long upper shadow. Technically, this market action indicates weak bounce and sell on rise in the market. Hence, one may expect some more weakness in the coming week.
Nifty is nearing a crucial lower support around 24300-24200 levels (previous swing low and 200day EMA), but a sustainability above the said supports could be doubtful. Hence, a decisive move below 24200, the Nifty could slide down to the next lows of around 24000-23900 levels in the near term. However, a strong upside momentum above the hurdle of 24700 could change the sentiment in favor of bulls.

The sensex ended Friday’s trade on a subdued note, slipping 270 points to close at 79,809.65 as persistent concerns over fresh U.S. tariffs on Indian exports weighed on investor sentiment and kept foreign inflows under pressure. Weakness was broad-based, with 12 of the 16 sectoral indices finishing lower, reflecting a cautious mood across the market. Bucking the trend, consumer-oriented stocks gained close to 0.6% amid optimism that the upcoming GST council meeting could announce supportive measures for the sector.
Mid- and small-cap indices also managed to edge up by around 0.5%, as investors shifted focus toward broader opportunities beyond large-cap names. On the index front, ITC and HDFC Bank were among the key contributors providing some support, while Reliance Industries added early strength before paring gains. Overall, the session underscored selective resilience in defensives and financials, even as global headwinds continued to dampen broader market momentum.

Vaibhav Vidwani, Research Analyst at Bonanza
Indian equity benchmarks closed lower today, as investor sentiment remained fragile following the implementation of steep U.S. tariffs on Indian goods. The BSE Sensex shed 271 points to close at approximately 79,809 points, while the Nifty 50 declined below the 24,500 mark, settling around 24,426 points. This marked another session of weakness as markets grappled with the economic implications of the 50% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
This punitive measure, implemented in response to India's continued imports of Russian oil, has severely impacted investor confidence. Export-oriented sectors, particularly textiles, pharmaceuticals, and engineering goods, bore the brunt of selling pressure as investors reassessed earnings prospects for companies heavily dependent on U.S. markets.
Among Sensex constituents, Reliance Industries declined +2% ahead of its Annual General Meeting, while banking heavyweights HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank also contributed to the index's decline. However, consumer-focused stocks like ITC, Hindustan Unilever, and Asian Paints provided some resilience, benefiting from expectations of GST reforms that could boost domestic consumption.
Looking ahead, market participants are closely monitoring potential policy responses from the Indian government to mitigate tariff impacts. The market's recovery will largely depend on India's ability to diversify export markets and strengthen domestic demand drivers.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
Investor sentiment remained cautious as markets attempted to digest the full impact of the US tariff. The persistence of this issue is likely to heighten the future competitiveness of India's exports in some areas. While generally the pressure is also likely to weigh on INR, driving it to depreciation. Equity benchmarks underperformed, with mid- and small-cap segments particularly affected by risk aversion and stretched valuations.
In contrast, FMCG stocks sustained their upward momentum, supported by expectations of GST rate rationalisation and stronger consumer demand. However, the full impact of these on consolidated fiscal in the short term has to be reviewed. Generally, the market still perceives the tariff-related disruptions as temporary, and optimism hinges on progress in trade negotiations in the future. However, lack of strong interaction between both parties is increasing the uncertainty, adding confusion to the market.

Ross Maxwell, Global Strategy Lead at VT Markets.
Gold is once again approaching its all-time highs after a strong August rally, driven by growing expectations of US rate cuts, a softer USD, and further safe-haven demand. Golds appeal strengthened as investors sought protection against geopolitical uncertainties and slowing global growth, while the prospect of lower interest rates reduced the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.
Monetary policy remains the central driver. Markets increasingly expect that the Fed will shift toward easing, a stance that generally supports gold. At the same time, USD weakness has enhanced international purchasing power, increasing demand from global investors. Central banks have continued to add to their gold reserves and institutional appetite remains.
Any unexpected hawkish Fed commentary or stronger than expected US jobs or inflation data could reduce rate-cut expectations, putting pressure on gold prices. Similarly, a broad rebound in equity markets might reduce safe-haven flows, holding back Gold’s momentum.
Looking ahead, the market is focused on whether gold can decisively break above technical resistance at its all-time high. Sustained pressure on the dollar, combined with dovish Fed signals, would strengthen the case for new records. However, volatility is likely as traders navigate evolving economic and policy signals.
