Closing Bell: Nifty at 23,600, Sensex down 213 points; all eyes on RBI policy

February 06, 2025· 16:21 IST

CCL Products (CMP: Rs ) CCL Products saw its shares fall by 4.5%, hitting an intraday low of Rs 650 per share on February 6, after the company reported disappointing Q3 results. The weak performance led to selling pressure on the stock, with investors reacting to the underwhelming earnings report.

Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities

Today, the benchmark indices witnessed intraday profit booking at higher levels. The Nifty ends 93 points lower and the Sensex down by 213 points. Among sectors, selective Pharma stocks registered buying interest at lower levels, while the Real Estate and Capital Market indices shed over 2 percent. Technically, after a muted open, the market faced consistent selling pressure at higher levels. On the daily charts, it has formed a bearish candle near the 50-day SMA (Simple Moving Average), which supports further weakness from the current levels. However, the short-term texture of the market is still on the positive side.

We are of the view that if the market manages to trade above 23,500/77800, it could bounce back to 23,750-23,800/78500-78600. On the flip side, trading below 23,500/77800 would make the uptrend vulnerable. Below this level, traders may prefer to exit from their long positions.

Despite logging sharp gains in the first few minutes of opening trades, markets slipped into the red and moved in a narrow range with a negative bias for most part of the trading session. Investors booked profits in rate-sensitives like realty, banking, and auto shares ahead of tomorrow's monetary policy announcement. If there is any surprise rate cut, we may see short-term optimism.

Once again, 50DMA proved to be a reliable resistance level. After a strong opening, the Index failed to maintain higher levels, gradually losing ground throughout the day, ultimately closing at 23,603.35 with a loss of 92.95 points. Among the sectors, Pharma and IT stood out as the top performers, while Realty and FMCG faced the steepest declines. A noticeable divergence emerged in the broader market, with the Midcap correcting over 1%, while the Smallcap more or less mirrored the movement of Nifty50.

On the daily chart, Nifty50 formed a bearish candlestick pattern. However, the downside appears to be supported at the 23,520 level, while a break above 23,800 would be necessary to confirm the continuation of the uptrend.

Indian Rupee plunged to fresh record lows today on weak US Dollar and a recovery in the US Dollar index. Rising odds of a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India in its monetary policy meeting on Friday also pressurised the Rupee. However, a weak tone in crude oil prices cushioned the downside.

We expect Rupee to trade with negative bias amid weak domestic markets and importer demand for Dollars. Risk aversion in global markets amid ongoing uncertainty over US trade tariffs may further pressurise the Rupee. However, any intervention by the RBI may support the Rupee at lower levels. Traders may take cues from weekly unemployment claims data from the US. Investors may remain cautious ahead of the RBI’s monetary policy meeting decision and US non-farm payrolls data tomorrow. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 87.30 to Rs 87.90.

Ajay Garg, CEO, SMC Global Securities

RBI is expected to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.25% from the current rate of 6.50% in the Monetary policy meeting on February 7. The last rate cut was in May 2020 of 40 basis points to revive the economic growth affected by the pandemic. The cut in the repo rate means that the RBI will lend the money to the banks at a lower rate which in turn provides a benefit to the banks to charge lower interest rates from borrowers. This increases the money supply in the economy, strengthens liquidity, encourages borrowing, and boosts consumer demand.

The main reason why RBI will likely cut the key rate this time is the expectation of an easing of CPI to 4.5% - 4.7% in January 2025 from 5.2% in December 2024. For FY25, the real GDP growth is estimated at 6.4% which is the lowest growth rate in the last four years. Also, the GDP is expected to grow between 6.3% to 6.8% in FY26. To accelerate the GDP growth, there is an anticipation that the RBI will take the rate-cut route.

The increase in tax rebate to Rs12 lakhs in the Union Budget for increasing the disposable income of the middle-class population and the RBI’s recent liquidity measures of OMO and VRR auctions, show a commitment that India is looking to enhance liquidity, rejuvenate sluggish demand, and foster economic growth. However, the falling rupee is a key trigger that could influence the RBI's decision as further cuts can put pressure on the Indian rupee and increase outflows from the country. Globally, the tariff tensions and the strengthening dollar index can also affect RBI's monetary policy outcome on Friday.--

We do not anticipate the RBI cutting rates in the upcoming policy meeting. While inflation is showing signs of easing and domestic growth requires support, global conditions remain unfavourable for a rate cut at this stage. With China imposing retaliatory tariffs on the US, the RBI is likely to adopt a wait-and-watch approach regarding further developments in the trade war. Shipping costs are already elevated, and an immediate rate cut could widen the interest rate differential between the US and India, exerting additional pressure on the INR, which has already seen significant depreciation. The inflationary impact of this depreciation is yet to fully materialize. Moreover, the US Federal Reserve is unlikely to cut rates before April/May 2025.

The case for supporting growth will only gain traction once INR stability is ensured. Having said that, on the growth front, the RBI has already provided liquidity support through a CRR cut and OMOs, while the recent Union Budget introduced measures to boost consumption.

In the first policy meeting under the new Governor, we expect the RBI to continue addressing the liquidity deficit through additional measures. We see a possibility of a shift in policy stance from the current ‘neutral’ position to ‘accommodative’. This will offer enough reason for the Indian stock market to rejoice.

Dhiraj Relli, MD & CEO of HDFC Securities

At the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, led by Governor Malhotra, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is widely expected to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points. However, this decision remains finely balanced. The central bank may instead prioritize liquidity measures and defer the rate cut to the April policy review, particularly in light of mounting global uncertainties.

There are several compelling arguments in favor of a rate cut. Sluggish economic growth, the government’s advance estimates, and recent efforts to boost banking system liquidity create a strong case. Just last week, the RBI announced plans to inject ₹1.5 lakh crore into the banking system, following a December infusion of ₹1.16 lakh crore through a 50 basis point reduction in the cash reserve ratio.

Nonetheless, challenges persist. Inflation remains above the RBI’s medium-term target of 4%, and increasing global trade-related uncertainties have added complexity to the economic outlook. The government’s fiscal prudence, reflected in the recently announced Union Budget, points toward a downward trajectory for interest rates. While the broader direction seems clear, the precise timing of the next rate cut remains uncertain.
