Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities

Bank Nifty continues to witness bearish pressure as the index lost more than 1,000 points, although it recovered smartly before the close. The trend remains weak and a sell-on-rise strategy appears favourable in the short term. The RSI is in a bearish crossover and trending lower, indicating weak momentum.

On the lower end, the index may drift towards 58,000–57,500. On the higher side, resistance is placed at 59,500.

March 04, 2026· 16:18 IST

Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities

Today, the benchmark indices corrected sharply. After a sharp decline, the Nifty ended 385 points lower, while the Sensex was down by 1123 points. Among sectors, almost all the major sectoral indices closed in the negative territory, but the Metal Index lost the most, shedding over 4 percent. Technically, after a gap-down open, the market hovered between the 24,300/78500 to 24,600/79500 range.

We are of the view that the short-term outlook is weak but oversold. For traders, 24,300/78500 would act as a key support zone. If the market sustains above this level, the immediate resistance would be at 24,600/79500. Above 24,600/79500, it could move up to 24,800-25,000/80000-80500. Conversely, a decline below 24,300/78500 could change the sentiment. Below this, the market could slip to 24,100-24,000/78000-77800. The current market texture is extremely volatile and is expected to remain volatile in the near future.

March 04, 2026· 16:15 IST

Abhinav Tiwari Research Analyst at Bonanza

Today, the Indian equity markets ended sharply lower extending losses. The Sensex fell nearly 1,122 points to close around 79,116, while the Nifty 50 slipped about 385 points to end at 24,480. The fall was broad based, with heavy selling across largecaps, midcaps, and smallcaps.

The biggest trigger was the sharp escalation in Middle East tensions. Reports of US-Israel strikes on Iran and Iran’s retaliation pushed global crude oil prices higher. Brent crude jumped nearly 9% to around $85 per barrel, raising concerns about India’s import bill, inflation, and fiscal pressure.

Shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz added to fears of supply constraints.

Globally, markets were weak. Japan’s Nikkei dropped sharply, and risk sentiment deteriorated across Asia. The rupee weakened to around 92.05 against the US dollar, reflecting capital outflows and higher oil prices. Banking, metals, infrastructure, and aviation stocks led the decline. Bank Nifty fell over 2%, while heavyweights in infra and ports saw sharp cuts. Oil-sensitive sectors such as autos and paints also witnessed selling. On the other hand, select defense stocks gained modestly amid rising geopolitical risks. Gold prices remained firm as investors shifted to safe haven assets.

Markets are likely to remain volatile in the near term. If crude prices rise further, macro pressures could intensify. Any signs of geopolitical de-escalation may trigger a short term relief rally. We should remain cautious and focus on defensive sectors like FMCG, pharma, and utilities while closely tracking oil prices, FII flows, and global developments.

March 04, 2026· 16:12 IST

Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities

The Indian rupee recorded its steepest two-session decline since May 2025, as soaring energy prices intensified fears of persistent inflation and a widening trade deficit. This prevailing risk-off sentiment, coupled with high energy costs, is expected to keep the currency under pressure in the near term.

Investors are closely monitoring the longevity of the Middle East conflict, as a prolonged standoff would likely drive up the import cost of energy and precious metal while hindering export growth.

Spot USDINR faces immediate resistance at 92.60, while key support is firmly established at 91.80.

March 04, 2026· 16:07 IST

Anindya Banerjee, Head Currency and Commodity Research, Kotak Securities

USDINR has surged to a fresh all-time high near 92.30 in the spot market, driven by the sharp rise in crude oil prices and a broader shortage of dollar liquidity in global markets amid the escalating conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel.

We expect the RBI to intervene periodically to contain excessive volatility and prevent a disorderly depreciation in the rupee. However, as long as crude oil prices remain elevated, the rupee could continue to face depreciation pressures.

The key variable to monitor now is the status of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments. The longer disruptions persist, the higher oil prices are likely to move, which in turn could push USDINR further upward.

Conversely, any quick de-escalation in the conflict and restoration of normal shipping flows through Hormuz could help stabilize crude prices and provide some relief to the rupee.

Near-term outlook: We expect USDINR spot to trade in a range of 91–93.

Taking Stock: Market bloodbath on rising US-Iran tensions; Sensex slumps 1,123 pts, Nifty ends below 24,500

March 04, 2026· 16:04 IST

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities

The havoc continued in the Indian markets on Wednesday and the Nifty closed the day lower by 385 points. After opening on a huge downside gap of 480 points on the back of weak global cues due to rising geo-political tension, Nifty made an attempt of recovery in the mid part of the session amidst range bound action. The opening downside gap has been filled partially and Nifty closed the day off the lows.

A reasonable green candle was formed on the daily chart with gap down opening and with upper and lower shadow. Technically, this market action indicates sharp selling with minor volatility. We observe meaningful upside recoveries after a sharp gap down openings in the last couple of sessions. This action could be an attempt of bulls to witness relief rally.

The underlying trend of Nifty remains weak amidst global geo-political tension. Nifty is currently sliding down to an important support zone of around 24300-24100 (previous important swing lows and opening up gap of 12th May). Hence, there is a higher possibility of reasonable upside bounce from the lows in the near term. Immediate resistance is placed at 24600.

March 04, 2026· 16:01 IST

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments

Global risk sentiment remained fragile amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which kept oil prices volatile. Indian equities mirrored the broader risk off environment due to the impact of inflation and potential for higher CAD. The continued depreciation of the INR also remains a key concern, while incremental foreign outflows lead to near-term volatility in the market.

We advise investors to avoid panic sell-off and adopt a disciplined, long-term perspective and exercise patience over the next several weeks, as current price levels may offer a strategic entry point for the medium to long term.

March 04, 2026· 15:47 IST

Sudeep Shah - Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities

Nifty opened with a sharp gap down of nearly 500 points amid escalating US–Israel–Iran tensions. However, the index traded within a tight range for most of the session and eventually settled at 24481, down 1.55%. With today’s close, Nifty has decisively broken below the crucial 24,570–24,600 support zone on the daily chart, a region that had witnessed strong buying interest on the previous two occasions. The RSI has settled around the 30 mark, signalling bearish momentum, while the widening DI lines indicate a strong dominance of sellers over buyers.

On the sectoral front, Nifty IT ended the day as the lone sectoral gainer, ending with a modest gain of 0.11%. Rupee hitting a record low of 92, could have possibly weighed on IT sector’s sentiment. On the other hand, Nifty Metal, ended the day as the top sectoral loser, followed by Nifty PSU Bank, which has now given consecutive lower close on the daily chart. With regards to stocks, Coal India & Bharti Airtel emerged as the top stock gainers amongst the Nifty pack while Tata Steel & TMPV emerged as the top two losers.

The Midcap and Small cap indices too opened weak and extended their decline in the first half before recovering some ground later in the session. Despite the pullback, both indices ended with losses of over 2%, underperforming the frontline indices.

The market breadth deteriorated further as the advance-decline ratio was heavily tilted in the favour of bears at day’s close. A total of 440 stocks out of the Nifty 500 universe ended in the red.

Nifty View

Going ahead, the immediate support for Nifty is placed in the 24350-24300 zone. This zone acted as a strong support in the month of August 2025. Any sustainable move below this zone could result in Nifty extending its weakness towards 24100, followed by 23800 in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 24650–24700 zone is likely to act as an immediate resistance.

Bank Nifty View

Bank Nifty also opened gap down and largely remained range-bound through the day, closing at 58755, down 1.81%. The index has now slipped below its 100-day EMA on the daily chart. Notably, with today’s move, Bank Nifty has fully filled the 1106-point gap that was created on 3rd February on the back of India-US Trade deal.

For Bank Nifty, the immediate support is placed in the 58200–58100 zone. Any sustainable move below this zone could result in Bank Nifty extending its weakness towards 57700, followed by 57300 in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 59200–59300 zone is likely to act as an immediate resistance.

Colin Shah, MD, Kama Jewelry

The Indian gems & jewellery exports are facing a wave of uncertainties given the influence of the current geopolitical tension. A primary reason for this is the airspace closures, causing disturbances in air cargo routes across the Middle East. Parallelly, the volatility in dollar rates is also leading to unpredictability in exports. As a result of this, overseas buyers are being cautious in closing deals, as a free-flow trade can only be possible if logistical constraints are lifted. Additionally, a 3x to 4x spike in the insurance on shipments is another concern cutting through the already impacted margins of traders.

Having said that, the demand-supply dynamics appear to be in control when it comes to gems & jewellery exports, as there is sufficient inventory in place to cater to already impacted demand. We are hopeful that the parties at conflict arrive at an amicable truce and trade flow becomes seamless as before.

MRF shares were trading around Rs 1,35,125, down about 2.7 percent on the day, as tyre stocks declined broadly amid rising crude oil prices linked to the escalating US-Iran conflict.

Markets Live | ANZ’s Dhiraj Nim flags rupee risks if Middle East conflict drags on

Dhiraj Nim of Australia & New Zealand Banking Group said the outlook for the Indian rupee has not been changed for now, but warned that a prolonged escalation in West Asia could begin to weigh on the currency and growth outlook. Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Nim said if the conflict extends for two to three months, higher oil prices could weaken the rupee and exert a downward impact on economic growth. The comments come as the rupee breached a fresh record low on Wednesday, crossing the Rs 92-per-dollar mark amid a surge in crude prices and heightened geopolitical tensions.
