Today, the Indian benchmark indices ended in negative territory, with the Sensex declining 322 points to close at 85,440, while the Nifty 50 shed 78 points to settle at the 26,250 mark. The downward pressure reflected a combination of global geopolitical concerns and profit-booking in heavyweight banking and IT stocks, which dampened investor sentiment despite positive provisional banking results.
The primary trigger for today’s weakness was heightened geopolitical uncertainty following the US military intervention in Venezuela, which resulted in the detention of President Nicolás Maduro. This development created immediate volatility across global commodity and equity markets, with investors concerned about potential crude oil supply disruptions and broader regional instability in Latin America. The incident raised questions about oil price trajectories, though medium term expectations suggest potential bearish pressure as Venezuela's production capacity could normalize.
Domestically, despite banks releasing strong provisional Q3 FY26 results showing double digit growth in advances and deposits, major banking stocks witnessed profit booking. HDFC Bank and Infosys emerged as top losers, declining approximately 2% each, which significantly weighed on the indices given their heavyweight status. The IT and telecom sectors also dragged market performance lower, while oil and gas stocks reflected the uncertainty stemming from Venezuela developments.
Looking ahead, we will closely monitor how geopolitical developments in Venezuela unfold and their impact on crude oil prices, which directly affect India's import bill. While the Venezuela situation introduces near term volatility, experts suggest it could potentially benefit India through unlocking nearly USD 1 billion in long-pending dues. The banking sector's strong Q3 provisional results indicate fundamental strength.
We should watch FII-DII flows carefully, as early January data shows FIIs remained net sellers. The market's ability to sustain at this level will depend on global cues stabilizing and earnings season delivering positive surprises across sectors beyond banking.

After witnessing a decisive break out of the crucial hurdle of around 26200 levels on Friday, Nifty slipped into minor weakness on Monday and closed the day lower by 78 points. After opening on a positive note, the market surged higher in the early part and registered new all-time highs at 26373 levels. The profit booking has emerged from the new highs in the mid to later part of the session and Nifty closed the day lower with minor recovery note.
A reasonable red candle was formed on the daily chart with minor upper and lower shadow. Technically, the market is placed at the crucial support zone as per the concept of change in polarity. The recent breakout of hurdles remains valid and Nifty is expected to bounce back from the lows in the short term.
The underlying trend of the market remains positive. Nifty is expected to bounce back from near the important support of around 26200-26150 levels in the next 1-2 sessions. The near-term upside target to be watched around 26700.

In Monday’s session, profit booking was observed in the Bank Nifty index from higher levels, resulting in the formation of a bearish candlestick on the daily chart. However, the broader chart structure remains positive as the index has delivered a falling trendline breakout and is sustaining above its short-term 10-day and 20-day EMAs. Additionally, the RSI is in a bullish crossover, indicating underlying strength in momentum. Hence, as long as Bank Nifty sustains above the 20-day EMA, a buy-on-dips strategy can be adopted with a positive bias. Immediate support is placed at 59,700, resistance at 60,500, while positional support is seen near 59,300 levels.

The index witnessed profit-taking after registering a new all-time high. The near-term trend remains strong, as the Nifty closed above the recent breakout level. Momentum indicators such as the RSI and key moving averages continue to maintain positive positioning.
On the downside, support is placed in the 26,170–26,200 zone; a decisive break below 26,170 may trigger a corrective move towards 26,000. On the upside, resistance is placed in the 26,370–26,400 zone.

Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities.
The benchmark Nifty index kicked off the week on a strong note, scaling a fresh all time high of 26373 during Monday’s session. However, the index faced profit booking in the second half, trimming intraday gains. Despite the selling pressure, Nifty staged a mild recovery from the day’s low and eventually settled at 26250, down 0.30%. On the daily chart, the index has formed a bearish candle with small upper and lower shadows.
Within the Nifty basket, Nestle India and Bharat Electronics emerged as the top performers, providing stability amid broader volatility. On the flip side, HDFC Bank and Infosys were the major drags, exerting notable pressure on the headline index. Among sectoral movers, Nifty Realty and Nifty Consumer Durables outshone others, while Nifty IT and Nifty Oil & Gas closed as the biggest laggards, reflecting mixed sector-specific cues.
The broader markets also presented a contrasting picture. The Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.16%, signalling mild weakness after recent gains. In sharp contrast, the Nifty Smallcap 100 outperformed the frontline indices, ending at 17926 with a healthy gain of 0.53%, highlighting renewed interest in select smallcap pockets.
Market breadth leaned slightly in favour of declines, with the advance–decline ratio reflecting cautious sentiment. Out of the Nifty 500 universe, 268 stocks closed in the red, signalling that while the headline index hit record highs, broader participation remained somewhat subdued.
Nifty View
Going ahead, for Nifty, the zone of 26130-26100 will act as important support. On the upside, the zone of 26370-26400 will act as a crucial hurdle. Any sustainable move above 26400 will lead to further upside upto the 26550 level.
Bank Nifty View
The banking benchmark index, Bank Nifty, also witnessed a profit booking after marking a fresh all-time high on Monday. It has formed a bearish candle with minor shadows on either side.
Going ahead, the zone of 60400-60500 will act as an important hurdle for the index. Any sustainable move above the level of 60500 will lead to further upside upto 61100, followed by 61600 in the short term. On the downside, the zone of 59700-59600 will act as important support for the index.

The Indian rupee has endured a persistent downward spiral, losing ground in nine out of the past ten trading sessions. This weakness is primarily fueled by ambiguity surrounding bilateral trade agreements between Washington and New Delhi, alongside a sluggish domestic stock market triggered by an exodus of foreign capital. Furthermore, a surge in geopolitical uncertainty has bolstered the greenback’s appeal. This flight to safety followed the detention of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro by American military personnel over the weekend.
In the coming days, the USDINR spot pair faces resistance near the 90.45 threshold, while downward movement is expected to find support around the 89.90 mark.

Domestic markets began the first full week of 2026 on a cautious footing, as Indian 10-year bond yields reflected expectations of elevated government borrowing. On a positive note, December GST collections saw a rebound after November’s dip, while the manufacturing PMI moderated but stayed firmly in expansionary territory.
Early Q3 trends in bank credit/advances indicate strong momentum, supporting overall optimism.
Globally, investors are awaiting key U.S. economic data and Fed guidance, while the BoJ reaffirmed its tightening stance. Looking ahead, Q3 earnings will dominate focus and guide near-term market trends, with sentiment remaining moderately positive.

Rupee traded weak by 9 paise to 90.27 against the dollar as geopolitical tensions curtailed foreign inflows, keeping bullion prices elevated and adding pressure on the currency. A data-heavy week in the US, including ADP employment, non-farm payrolls, unemployment and initial jobless claims, is expected to drive volatility in the dollar and, in turn, the rupee.
The currency is likely to remain under pressure within a broad 89.75–90.65 range in the near term.

Kaynat Chainwala, AVP Commodity Research, Kotak Securities
Oil prices showed little reaction to the geopolitical shock surrounding the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, with WTI slipping below $57/bbl as markets judged the impact on global crude supplies to be limited.
OPEC+ holding output policy steady, the absence of damage to Venezuelan oil infrastructure, and the country’s small share of global output helped cap any risk premium. While Venezuelan production and exports are expected to decline further as PDVSA shuts wells amid storage constraints and ongoing U.S. sanctions, the avoidance of a full-scale war reduces the likelihood of a significant supply disruption.
In the medium term, however, a U.S.-led push to revive Venezuela’s oil industry could eventually add barrels back to the market, particularly if it encourages American energy firms to invest in a country that holds more than 300 billion barrels or roughly 20% of the world’s oil reserves.
