Closing Bell: Nifty at 25,250, Sensex gains 700 points; IT, media, auto rise

Indian equity indices ended on strong note with Nifty around 25,250 on June 25. At close, the Sensex was up 700.40 points or 0.85 percent at 82,755.51, and the Nifty was up 200.40 points or 0.80 percent at 25,244.75.

Markets maintained their positive tone and gained nearly a percent, supported by favorable global cues. A strong handover from the U.S. markets triggered a gap-up start, which was further fueled by buying interest in select heavyweight stocks. As a result, the Nifty index managed to sustain above the key resistance level of 25,200 and finally settled at 25,244.75.

On the sectoral front, most indices ended in the green, with IT, auto, and FMCG emerging as the top gainers. The broader indices also performed well, posting gains in the range of 0.4% to 1.5%.

The recent market resilience despite mixed global cues reflects underlying strength, although heightened volatility continues to keep traders cautious. Notably, the Nifty has surpassed the 25,200 mark just ahead of the June monthly expiry. It will be crucial to see whether it can sustain above this level, especially given the divergent trends across sectors. Amidst this backdrop, we maintain our positive outlook and continue to advocate a “buy on dips” approach, with a strong emphasis on stock selection.

Today, the benchmark indices continued their positive momentum, with the Nifty ends 200 points higher, while the Sensex was up by 700 points. Among sectors, the Media index outperformed, rallied 1.75 percent, whereas the Defense Index was the top loser, shed 2 percent. Technically, after a gap-up open, the market held its positive momentum throughout the day. A bullish candle on daily charts and an uptrend continuation formation on intraday charts indicate a further uptrend from the current levels.

For trend-following traders, now, 25000/82000 and 25100/82300 would act as key support zones. As long as the market is trading above these levels, the bullish sentiment is likely to continue.

On the higher side, 25300/83000 would act as an immediate resistance zone for day traders. A successful breakout of 25300/83000 could push the market towards 25450-25500/83500-83650. However, below 25000/82000, the uptrend would become vulnerable.

The index remained mostly positive after a strong start. Sentiment continues to improve as buying interest in stocks rises. The ceasefire following the conflict between Israel and Iran has boosted confidence among bullish traders, who are now aiming to take the Nifty towards 25,750. Immediate resistance is placed at 25,350; a breakout above this level could extend the rally towards 25,750.

On the downside, the 24,820–25,000 zone is likely to continue acting as a crucial support. Unparallelled Put writing, in contrast to Call OI unwinding, reflects the bullish aggression of traders.

Today, the Indian stock market closed with notable gains, reflecting positive investor sentiment driven by easing geopolitical tensions and encouraging global cues. The Sensex ended the day up by approximately 700 points (around 0.85%), closing near 82,700 levels, while the Nifty 50 rose by about 0.8%, settling above 25,240. Market breadth was strong, with nearly 2,000 shares advancing against around 600 decliners, indicating broad-based buying interest.

The upside momentum was primarily fueled by gains in key sectors such as IT, auto, and FMCG. Major contributors included Titan Company, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and Bharti Airtel, with Bharti Airtel hitting a 52-week high during the session. Investor confidence was bolstered by a tentative ceasefire between Israel and Iran, which eased concerns over Middle East tensions and contributed to a drop in crude oil prices.

Indian equity markets have staged a recovery, supported by easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a moderation in crude oil prices. While FIIs continue to withdraw capital, positive global cues are helping sustain domestic market momentum. Large-cap stocks, especially in IT and auto, are outperforming, aided by a strong dollar and improved risk appetite.

Domestically, a favourable monsoon forecast, and moderating inflation are further underpinning the optimism. Although the prospect of new U.S. tariffs presents a potential headwind, near-term market sentiment remains broadly positive.

Rupee traded flat near 86.10 after a sharp rally of over 0.75 seen in the previous session, taking a breather within a narrow range of 86.00–86.15.

Market participants are now eyeing upcoming triggers from the U.S., including the PCE Price Index and GDP data later this week. The rupee is expected to trade in a range of 85.70 to 86.25.

The Index gradually compounded its gains after a strong start and eventually closed higher at 25,244.75, registering gains of 200.40 points. All the sectors ended the day in positive territory, with Media and IT being the top performers. There was disparity in the broader markets where Midcaps lagged the Frontline Index while Smallcaps advanced by 1.49% and outperformed.

Finally, the Index has given a decisive close above the 25,100 mark, which is now expected to act as immediate support. With the current momentum, the Index appears to move towards the 25,350–25,450 zone in the near term.

Indian rupee ended lower at 86.09 per dollar on Wednesday versus Tuesday's close of 85.98.

Titan Company, Infosys, M&M, Grasim Industries, JSW Steel were among top gainers on the Nifty, while losers were Bharat Electronics, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Eicher Motors, Axis Bank, ONGC.

All the sectoral indices ended in the green with auto, consumer durables, IT, telecom, healthcare, media up 1-2 percent.

Indian Rupee lost early gains on recovery in the US Dollar index and selling pressure from FIIs. Rupee opened in the positive on surge in domestic markets and improved global risk sentiments. Ceasefire between Israel and Iran has led to rise in risk appetite.

We expect Rupee to trade with a positive bias on positive tone in global markets amid rise in risk appetite in global markets and falling crude oil prices. Any dovish comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell may pressurise the US Dollar which may also support the Rupee. However, any violation of the ceasefire may lead to fresh geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Equity indices and futures are now higher vs when the Israel attacks on Iran started, and the comments on “Ceasefire” have only ignited aggressive bids for risk assets here. In line with the same we have also seen rapid momentum in the Indian markets, with Nifty above 25,250 for the first time since October 2024.

Nasdaq too closed at all time high yesterday (closing basis), and SPX is just 60/70bps shy of its own ATH levels. Ceasefire (despite being a fragile one) seems to be working so far, and Trump also acknowledged China’s buying of IRAN oil adding that China could continue to buy, adding that he hopes that they will purchase plenty from US also.

Meanwhile, on data front, Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index tumbled to 93.0 (vs upwardly revised 98.4) in June, with the present situation tumbling to the WEAKEST level since Sept 2024. OIL continued to tumble, now below $68/bbl, retracing almost all the gains it saw post the Israel’s attacks.

We remain constructive on Indian markets on the back of RBI’s monetary easing and earnings recovery in 2HFY25. Valuation comfort has eroded, although prospects of an earnings recovery keep us positive on overall markets. Indian IT has rallied hard off late (outperforming the broader indices) on the expectations of US rate cuts in the H2 and resilient economy (recession odds slipping back below 30% from 65% in April). But the valuations and tepid earning growth DO NOT offer much of upside from here on – while I would be looking for SHORTS again in IT, would be better to wait on the sideline for now.

A decisive sustainable move above 25250, will lead to market witnessing the previous highs above 26K however 25460 may act as a near term resistance. Continue with our stance that alpha to be generated in the mid and small cap names rather than just in the Index.

Adani Total Gas and Jio-bp today announced signing of an agreement to redefine the auto fuel retail experience for Indian consumers. Under this partnership, select ATGL fuel outlets will offer Jiobp’s high-performance liquid fuels (petrol and diesel), while select Jio-bp fuel outlets will integrate ATGL’s CNG dispensing units, within ATGL’s authorized Geographical Areas (GA), thus enhancing the supply of high-quality fuels to transport consumers.

ACME Sikar Solar, a wholly owned subsidiary of ACME Solar Holdings Limited, has executed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for 300 MW capacity in Rajasthan at a fixed tariff of Rs 3.05 per kWh.
