Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty end flat amid volatility; mid, smallcap outperform

Indian benchmark indices ended on a flat note in the volatile session on June 11. The Sensex was down 33.49 points or 0.04 percent at 76,456.59, and the Nifty was up 5.60 points or 0.02 percent at 23,264.80.

Nifty continued to show choppy movement at the hurdle of 23400 levels on Tuesday and closed the day with minor positive note. After opening with a positive bias, the market continued to move up in the first half of the session. Intraday weakness got triggered from near 23400 levels in the later half, Nifty erased the gains of the day and finally closed lower.

A small negative candle was formed on the daily chart with upper shadow. After a sharp upmove recently, the market showing such formations in the last two sessions indicates possibility of minor downward correction in the short term.

Nifty is currently placed at the hurdle of 23400-23500 levels (1.382% Fibonacci projection), weekly hanging man and the opening downside gap of 4th June, which are weighing high for the market to sustain the new all-time highs. Hence, there is a possibility of dip in the market. Immediate support is at 23050 levels.

Nifty remained sideways during the day as there was no directional move. The sentiment might remain sideways as well until it breaks out of the 23150-23350 range. Any decisive breakout on either side might confirm the future direction of the market. On the higher end, above 23350, it might move towards 23600. Meanwhile, support below 23150 is placed at 23000-22900.

The BankNifty Index experienced a sideways trading session and was unable to surpass the 50000 mark, where the highest open interest is built up on the call side. Once the index breaks above 50000, it is likely to see sharp short covering towards the 50500/51000 levels. The undertone remains bullish, and traders should adopt a buy-on-dip approach with support at 49000, where the highest open interest is built up on the put side.

Indian rupee ended marginally lower at 83.57 per dollar on Tuesday versus Monday's close of 83.51

At close, the Sensex was down 33.49 points or 0.04 percent at 76,456.59, and the Nifty was up 5.60 points or 0.02 percent at 23,264.80. About 2246 shares advanced, 1193 shares declined, and 70 shares unchanged.

ONGC, L&T, Adani Ports, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors were are among the top gainers on the Nifty, while losers included Kotak Mahindra Bank, Dr Reddy's Labs, Asian Paints, Reliance Industries and Divis Labs.

Among sectors, selling was seen in the bank, FMCG, healthcare and metal names, while capital goods, oil & gas and realty up 1 percent each.

The BSE midcap index rose 0.7 percent while the smallcap index added nearly 1 percent.

Indian Rupee depreciated by 0.06% today on strong US Dollar and a surge in crude oil prices. However, positive domestic markets and fresh FII inflows cushioned the downside. Weak Pound and Euro also supported the Dollar. Euro fell on political uncertainty after French President called for snap elections while Pound fell on sharp rise in claimant count change.

We expect Rupee to trade with a slight negative bias on strong US Dollar and elevated crude oil prices. However, positive global markets and fresh foreign inflows may support Rupee at lower levels.

Traders may remain cautious ahead inflation data from India and US. Investors may remain cautious ahead of FOMC meeting outcome. Fed is expected to keep its monetary policy unchanged. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 83.30 to Rs 83.80.

Hamas accepts a UN Security Council ceasefire resolution and is ready to negotiate over the details, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters on Tuesday, adding that it was up to Washington to ensure that Israel abides by it.

A consortium of lenders, led by the State Bank of India (SBI), has given in-principle approval for a Rs 14,000-crore loan to Vodafone Idea (Vi), which is looking to turnaround its unprofitable operations through a series of measures, including launching 5G services.

While an official communication is still awaited, the joint venture between Vodafone Group Plc and Birla’s conglomerate has received informal commitments from several lenders, including Punjab National Bank (PNB), Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, and other public and private sector banks, sources aware of the development told Moneycontrol.

The consortium is expected to disburse funds in tranches once the transaction is closed. The proceeds will be used to repay operational creditors, roll out a 5G network, and bid for additional spectrum, sources said, adding the telco is aggressively pursuing its larger objective of raising Rs 25,000 crore after the successful FPO. The initial public offering (IPO) of Le Travenues Technology, which operates the travel booking platform ixigo, continued to witness robust investor interest on the second day of bidding on June 11 after the offer was subscribed 2.52 times. Investors subscribed for 11 crore shares as against the offer size of 4.37 crore shares, the subscription data showed.

Retail investors were at the forefront, bidding 7.56 times the allotted quota, followed by Non-institutional investors (NIIs)/HNIs who have bought 3.92 times the reserved portion. Suzlon Group announced a new order win for the development of 103.95 MW wind power project for AMPIN Energy Transition Private Limited.

Suzlon will install 33 wind turbine generators (WTGs) with a Hybrid Lattice Tubular (HLT) tower and a rated capacity of 3.15 MW each at the client’s site in the Fatehgarh district in Rajasthan.

International brokerage Jefferies retained its buy call on ONGC, noting that the central government's policy continuity should keep the oil PSU's profitability elevated.

Since the election verdict was announced on June 4, with the BJP unable to cross the 272-mark to form a simple majority, investors have offloaded their holdings in ONGC. The oil major's shares have tanked around 9 percent.

According to Jefferies, this correction appears overdone and can prove to be an attractive entry point for investors. The brokerage has a target price of Rs 390 per share on ONGC, offering a 50 percent upside from current levels. Read More
