Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking
Markets traded lackluster for the second consecutive session and ended marginally lower, indicating continued consolidation after the recent surge. After a stable start, the Nifty moved within a narrow range for most of the session in the absence of fresh triggers and eventually closed around the previous day’s level at 26,142.10. Sectoral trends remained mixed and rotational, with profit-taking seen in select IT, pharma and FMCG stocks, while realty and metals ended largely flat. The broader markets also showed a mixed trend, with the midcap index declining nearly 0.5%, while the smallcap index closed marginally higher, highlighting selective participation.
Global cues continued to influence sentiment, particularly during the opening trade; however, muted volumes and weak market breadth reflected a cautious stance among participants. Overall activity remained stock-specific, with traders focusing on selective opportunities rather than broad-based positioning.
We maintain a positive bias amid the ongoing consolidation in the index and continue to recommend a “buy-on-dips” approach as long as the Nifty holds its prevailing uptrend. For fresh momentum, stronger participation from the banking index will be essential, with a decisive breakout above the 59,500 level likely to fuel the next leg of the up move. Until then, participants are advised to adopt a stock-specific approach, focus on sectors showing consistent outperformance such as private banks, metals and auto, and adhere to disciplined risk management in the low-volume environment.

The Nifty index began the day on a flat note, witnessed range-bound consolidation, and eventually settled on a negative note at 26,142. Technically, on the daily chart, Nifty formed a shooting star candle, reflecting selling pressure at higher levels. The next major hurdle for the index is placed in the 26,250–26,325 zone, while immediate support is seen near the 26,050 level, followed by 25,990, where the bullish gap support is placed. Thus, the index is likely to consolidate in the 25,990–26,325 band in the short term, and traders are advised to maintain a stock-specific approach.
The Bank Nifty index opened on a flat note, witnessed selling pressure, and settled on a negative note at 59,184. Technically, on the daily chart, the Bank Nifty index has formed a red candle with a long upper shadow, reflecting selling pressure at higher levels. On the downside, the index has formed a good base around 58,800, while major resistance is placed near the 59,550 level. An eventual breakout on either side of this consolidation range is likely to set up the next directional move for the index.

Indian markets ended flat on December 24, 2025, with the Sensex slipping marginally to around 85,408.70 and Nifty settling near 26,139.70 amid holiday thinned trading ahead of Christmas closure. Stronger than expected US GDP growth of 4.3% (annualized) in Q3 2025 bolstered global sentiment but failed to lift Indian indices significantly. Meanwhile, US efforts to intercept a third Venezuelan oil tanker off its coast, part of a blockade on sanctioned shipments heightened geopolitical oil supply concerns leading to ~6% gain in the past 5 trading sessions in the oil prices which is having a negative impact on sectors like OMC, Aviation, Paints and Logistics.
Oil and Gas, Pharma and IT dragged indices lower, while Metal and Realty were mildly positive today. Turning to stock specific developments, Coal India received board approval to list its wholly owned subsidiary South Eastern Coalfields Limited, boosting PSU IPO buzz and value unlocking which is lifting the stock since the past two trading sessions while Blackstone's plan to acquire a 9.99% stake in Federal Bank for Rs 6,196 crore via warrants drew attention to banking sector consolidation, pending regulatory nods. This move is part of a broader trend of private capital entering Indian banks, reinforcing capital bases and highlighting interest from global investors.

Today, the benchmark indices witnessed selling pressure at higher levels. The Nifty ended 35 points lower, while the Sensex was down by 116 points. Among sectors, buying was seen in selective financial stocks, while the Capital Market Index shed nearly 1 percent. Technically, after an early morning intraday rally, the market once again faced resistance near 26,250/85750 and reversed sharply. From the day's highest point, the market shed over 100/350 points.
We believe that the intraday market texture is non-directional; hence, level-based trading would be the ideal strategy for day traders. On the higher side, 26,250/85750 remains the crucial resistance zone for the bulls, whereas 26,100/85300 would be the immediate support area. On the higher side, above 26,250/85750, the market could move up to 26,350-26,400/86000-86200, while below 26,100/85300, the chances of hitting 26,000/85000 would increase.

Ross Maxwell, Global Strategy Operations Lead, VT Markets
The rupee’s recovery almost definitely played a meaningful role in attracting foreign institutional investors (FIIs) back into Indian equities last week. The recovery reduces the risk of losses for USD based investors and provides improving macro confidence, especially after such an extended period of depreciation.
Easing global bond yields also helped, as US yields fell back from recent highs, meaning the demand for emerging market equities improved. Valuations in select Indian sectors had corrected meaningfully after months of selling, creating opportunities for FIIs who had been underweight India. Domestically, strong GDP momentum, healthy credit growth, and sustained government capital expenditure, continue to help distinguish India from many other emerging markets in a positive light.
Despite this short-term inflow, the year as a whole has seen record FII outflows, driven largely by global factors such as tight monetary policy, a strong USD, and higher risk-free returns in developed markets. Looking ahead to next year, FII flows are likely to be more balanced rather than one-directional.
If global rates begin to ease and the USD weakens, India could see more sustained inflows, supported by its structural growth story. However, volatility will remain, and flows may remain selective, favouring high-quality companies with earnings visibility rather than buying more broadly.

Dilip Parmar – Senior Research Analyst, HDFC Securities
Following two days of muted close, the Indian rupee retreated, lagging behind its Asian peers on Wednesday. This decline was driven by a shift toward risk aversion, fueled by persistent capital withdrawals from foreign investors leading up to the holiday break, alongside heightened greenback demand from bullion importers.
Despite the central bank’s announcement of USDINR swaps and Open Market Operations (OMO), the measures failed to ignite market enthusiasm as they did little to bridge the widening gap between dollar supply and demand ahead of year end.
The outlook for spot USDINR maintains an upward trajectory provided it holds above the 89.00 mark; however, the 90.30 level continues to act as a formidable resistance for further gains.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
Indian equities moved largely sideways in a holiday-shortened week, with trading volumes remaining subdued as the year draws to a close—a trend mirrored across broader Asian markets.
The RBI’s recently announced liquidity initiatives, including OMOs and a USD/INR buy–sell swap, are expected to improve systemic liquidity and help stabilise currency volatility.
On the global front, stronger-than-expected US GDP data points to economic resilience, although rising unemployment has tempered optimism. Gold extended its rally on a softer dollar and elevated geopolitical risks, supported by increasing expectations of continued Fed policy easing. Meanwhile, Brent crude hovered near multi-year lows, reinforcing a benign inflation outlook. Looking ahead, market activity is likely to remain muted, though investors will be closely tracking developments on the trade front.
