Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking
Markets remained volatile on the weekly expiry day and ended nearly half a percent lower amid mixed cues. After a flat start, the Nifty index gradually drifted lower, and a mid-session rebound attempt failed to sustain. Eventually, it closed near the day’s low at 25,111, down by 0.40%. The sectoral trend remained mixed, with realty, metal, and pharma posting gains, while key sectors like IT and banking emerged as the top laggards. Interestingly, the broader indices displayed relative strength and ended almost flat despite the benchmark's decline.
Global uncertainty and a muted start to the earnings season are weighing on investor sentiment. However, sustained liquidity inflows are helping to cushion the downside. This is clearly evident in the current market environment, where a divergent trend is visible—while the benchmark index is under pressure, mainly due to weakness in heavyweight IT stocks.
At the same time, rate-sensitive sectors like auto, realty, and select banking, along with continued interest in defensives like FMCG and pharma, are not only limiting the losses but also offering ample long-side trading opportunities. The resilience in the broader market further adds to this positive undertone. We recommend aligning positions accordingly, with a focus on stock selection and risk management, as the current market tone is likely to persist.

Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities
Markets largely remained in the negative zone amid uncertainty over the impending announcement of the India-US tariff outcome, as investors resorted to selling in banking, IT and oil & gas shares that led the downfall in key benchmarks. Once the deal is announced and if it suits the interests of both the countries, there will be a relief in the markets and we may see short-term spurt, else the sluggish to pessimist mood could continue.
Also, the ongoing earnings season will have a bearing on the markets, and investors would take positions based on how the results pan out going ahead.

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities
Nifty remained mostly under selling pressure throughout the day as the index failed to move beyond the crucial resistance level of 25,260, leading to long unwinding.
On the hourly chart, a consolidation breakout is visible, indicating weakening bullish momentum. The current sentiment appears bearish and may drag Nifty towards the 24,920–24,900 zone in the short term. On the higher side, 25,260 is likely to remain a strong resistance.

Vaibhav Vidwani, Research Analyst at Bonanza
Today, domestic stock market closed with a negative bias after a cautious and volatile session, reflecting investor apprehension amid mixed global cues and corporate earnings concerns. The BSE Sensex ending lower compared to its prior close around 82,634, while the NSE Nifty50 also declined from its near-flat position of 25,212. The negative closure was primarily driven by profit-taking in IT and financial sectors, along with uncertainty surrounding potential global trade disruptions and cautious stance ahead of quarterly earnings announcements from key companies such as Axis Bank, Wipro, and Jio Financial Services.
Key sectoral movers included weakness in IT, PSU bank, and private bank stocks, whereas sectors like Realty, Pharma, and Metals showed resilience but were not enough to lift the market.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
Indian equity benchmarks ended marginally lower as investors exercised caution amid subdued Q1 earnings announcements, particularly in the technology and banking sectors. Market participants remained sidelined due to elevated valuations of large-cap stocks and FII outflows owing to the uncertainty regarding US-India trade deal; however, any positive developments could amplify market sentiment.
Despite the muted trend, strong domestic liquidity and selective buying in realty and consumption theme stocks helped to limit the downside, keeping the broader market in a range-bound phase. The domestic macro fundamentals, like GDP growth and the stable inflationary trend, remain supportive in the medium to long-term.

Sensex Today| Indian Markets Poised for Continued Growth in H2 2025: smallcase Managers
According to smallcase Managers, Indian equity markets are expected to maintain their upward momentum, supported by strong macroeconomic fundamentals and favorable policy tailwinds. With the Nifty50 rebounding from its March lows, technical resistance is anticipated around 26,300. A decisive breakout could propel the index toward 27,500 or higher by year-end.
Key catalysts in the second half of 2025 include clarity on U.S. tariff policies and their implications for global trade, resolution of geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific and Middle East, and progress on strategic trade agreements—particularly the UK–India Free Trade Agreement, which could unlock export opportunities in sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and engineering.
However, smallcase Managers advise investors to closely track U.S. inflation trends. Although inflation currently appears subdued, the outlook remains uncertain due to potential disruptions in goods supply stemming from tariff-related developments. Should trade negotiations progress swiftly, ensuring stable and affordable supply chains, the U.S. Federal Reserve may begin rate cuts—potentially boosting global equity markets and attracting stronger foreign institutional inflows.
While the Fed has maintained interest rates steady through CY25 amid concerns about inflation and labor market uncertainties, the European Central Bank has already implemented a 100 basis point rate cut. Any softening by the Fed may provide the Reserve Bank of India with room to ease rates further. Additional rate cuts by the RBI could stimulate domestic consumption and economic growth, offering further support to the market outlook.
