Stock Market LIVE Updates: Sensex, Nifty trade flat; Coal India, Shriram Finance, NTPC top gainers

December 23, 2025· 16:20 IST

Sensex Today | Stock Market LIVE Updates: Benchmark indices were trading largely flat in a tightly range-bound session on Tuesday afternoon, with only marginal gains on the board. At 2:00 pm, the Sensex was up about 35 points while the Nifty edged slightly higher, as gains in energy, metals and select heavyweight stocks were offset by pressure on IT majors. Infosys, TCS and Wipro were among the top drags, while Coal India, Shriram Finance and UltraTech Cement featured among the key gainers.

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets traded in a subdued manner on the weekly expiry day and ended almost unchanged, taking a pause after the recent rebound. Following a steady start, the Nifty oscillated within a tight range with a mild positive bias and eventually settled at 26,177.15. Sectoral participation remained rotational, with metals, FMCG and energy witnessing buying interest, while IT and pharma saw selective pressure. The broader markets moved largely in line with the benchmark and closed flat to marginally positive.

With the holiday-shortened week ahead of the New Year and the absence of major domestic triggers, global cues continue to dictate market direction. This has led to selective positioning rather than aggressive trades, while foreign flows remained mixed.

Going forward, some consolidation in the index is likely after the recent rebound; however, the overall tone is expected to remain positive. We therefore continue to recommend a buy-on-dips approach, with an emphasis on stock selection based on relative strength. A decisive move above the 26,300 level would be required to generate fresh directional momentum, while support remains intact in the 25,950–26,050 zone.

Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst Lemonn Markets Desk

Indian equity benchmarks ended marginally lower on Tuesday, snapping a two-session winning streak, as markets lacked fresh triggers and foreign institutional investors resumed selling. The Sensex traded close to the flat line through most of the session before closing lower, while the Nifty slipped slightly below the 26,200 level despite intraday stability.

Market sentiment remained mixed. Global cues were largely supportive, with Asian markets trading higher and US futures steady, but domestic equities faced pressure from selective selling in index heavyweights, including Infosys and ICICI Bank. The absence of sustained buying interest following Monday’s rally contributed to some profit-taking.

Sectoral and stock-specific movements dominated trading. Cement stocks were in focus after Ambuja Cements announced board approval for a major merger involving ACC and Orient Cement, leading to gains of up to 10 percent in Ambuja Cements and Orient Cement shares. Railway and PSU-linked stocks such as IRCON, RVNL, and RailTel continued to see interest, supported by order inflows and expectations around upcoming policy developments.

In the broader market, select infrastructure and capital goods stocks advanced on project-related updates, while IT stocks showed mixed performance after recent gains. Shares of newly listed Meesho remained under pressure, extending their post-IPO correction.

Flows and macro indicators presented a mixed picture. Foreign institutional investors turned cautious after brief buying activity, while bond yields edged higher, with the 10-year government bond yield moving toward 6.70 percent amid supply-related concerns. The rupee remained relatively stable, supported by demand in the forward market, even as currency volatility stayed elevated.

Overall, equity markets appear to be consolidating near record levels, with stock-specific factors driving near-term moves. While broader conditions remain supported by global cues and longer-term expectations around monetary policy, near-term direction is likely to remain range-bound as investors monitor FII flows, interest rate trends, and year-end positioning.

Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities

On the weekly expiry session, the benchmark index Nifty moved in a remarkably tight band, reflecting a day dominated by consolidation. The index oscillated within a narrow 114 point range and eventually closed at 26177, marking a marginal gain of 0.02%. On the daily chart, Nifty printed a candle with shadows on both ends, indicating indecision among market participants after the recent pullback rally.

Adding to the day’s notable highlights, the India VIX slipped further and recorded its lowest-ever close on Tuesday, underscoring the persistent decline in market volatility and the growing complacency among traders.

In the Nifty constituents’ lineup, Coal India and Shri Ram Finance emerged as the top performers, lending some support to the index. On the flip side, heavyweight counters like Infosys and Bharti Airtel came under pressure and ended as the major laggards.

Across sectoral indices, Nifty Media and Nifty FMCG ended on a positive note. Meanwhile, Nifty IT and Nifty PSU Bank dragged the market lower, contributing to the flat-to-negative sentiment.

Moving to the broader market, the Nifty Midcap 100 closed almost unchanged, reflecting a subdued undertone. However, the Nifty Small Cap 100 showed resilience and outshone the frontline indices with a gain of 0.37%. Market breadth remained slightly positive, with the advance–decline ratio tilted in favour of advancers. Within the Nifty 500 universe, 272 stocks managed to close in the green, indicating selective buying across the broader space.

Nifty View

Going ahead, considering the current chart structure, the Nifty is likely to extend its northward journey in the next couple of trading sessions. As per the measure rule of the Double Bottom pattern, the upside target is placed at 26420 in the short term. While on the downside, the 20-day EMA zone of 26000-25950 will act as crucial support for the index.

Bank Nifty View

The banking benchmark index, Bank Nifty, traded in a narrow range of 185 points, which was the lowest daily range since May 18, 2024. It has formed a small body candle, which shows indecisiveness.

Going ahead, the zone of 59500-59600 will act as a crucial hurdle for the index. Any sustainable move above 59600 will lead to a sharp upside rally upto the 60000, followed by the 60500 level in the short term. On the downside, the zone of 59100-59000 will act as important support for the index.

December 23, 2025· 15:50 IST

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities

After showing sharp upmove in the last couple of sessions, Nifty cooled off its trend on Tuesday and closed the day on a consolidation mode. After opening on a positive note, the market shifted into a narrow range movement for better part of the session. Minor softness was seen towards the end and Nifty eventually closed on a flat to positive note.

A small red candle was formed on the daily chart with minor upper and lower shadow. Technically, this market action indicates a formation of breather type pattern after a sharp upmove recently. This market action could be an uptrend continuation pattern.

The underlying trend of Nifty remains positive. The market is expected to resume its uptrend after 1 or 2 sessions of consolidation movement or range bound action. Immediate support is placed at 26050. Next upside levels to be watched around 26300-26400 levels.

December 23, 2025· 15:46 IST

Dilip Parmar – Senior Research Analyst, HDFC Securities

The Indian rupee ended flat for the second straight session on Tuesday, as year-end rebalancing neutralised the losses. Despite this temporary stability, the combination of surging forward premiums, rising bond yields, and thinning liquidity points toward a volatile path ahead.

The USDINR pair is slated for consolidation between 89.10 and 90.30, with a trend reversal only likely on a move below 89.

December 23, 2025· 15:42 IST

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments

The domestic market traded in a narrow range and ended flat amid mixed global cues. Selling pressure persisted across most sectors, though financials and FMCG offered marginal support.

Going forward, investors are positioning for the next earnings season and monitoring evolving Fed policy expectations, as rate cut probabilities are slowly inching up for the January meeting. While an improving domestic demand outlook provides underlying support, uncertainty around global trade negotiations and the trajectory of the rupee will continue to influence sentiment.

Justin Khoo, Senior Market Analyst - APAC, VT Market

Gold and silver are closing 2025 firmly in macro-hedge territory rather than trading as conventional commodities. Spot gold is holding near $4,420–$4,440 per ounce, while silver trades around $68–$69 per ounce, both hovering close to record highs. Despite the Federal Reserve’s recent 25 bps rate cut, U.S. 10-year yields remain elevated near 4.2%, reinforcing the market’s concern over long-term inflation, fiscal sustainability, and rising term premia.

This yield resilience explains gold’s consolidation rather than a sharp breakout, as investors balance rate relief against structural debt risks.

Silver continues to outperform on a relative basis, benefiting from its dual role as a monetary metal and an industrial asset, positioning it for further upside after any near-term retracement.

With expanding U.S. debt issuance, persistent geopolitical uncertainty, and potential volatility from global carry-trade unwinds, particularly linked to Japan, precious metals remain strategically bid. We view pullbacks in gold as accumulation opportunities, while silver offers a higher-beta expression of macro stress heading into 2026.

Shivani Nyati, Head of Wealth at Swastika Investmart

KSH International made a muted debut on the stock market, with its shares listing at a discount of approximately -3.6 to - 4% to the IPO price. The stock opened at Rs 370 on both the BSE and NSE, compared with the IPO price of Rs 384, indicating cautious investor sentiment at debut.

KSH International operates as a manufacturer of magnet winding wires, supplying specialized components used in transformers, motors, generators and other capital goods.

The company benefits from demand tied to electrification, renewable energy, EVs and power infrastructure growth, with a diversified customer base across India and global markets.

A significant portion of the IPO funds was earmarked for repayment of debt, intended to strengthen the balance sheet. Other proceeds were planned for capex, including new machinery and facility expansion, alongside general corporate purposes.

The subdued listing performance reflects mixed investor interest, likely influenced by tepid public subscription, limited grey market premium, and neutral to cautious analyst outlooks on near-term gains. Short-term investors and traders can exit the position and long-term investors hold the issue with the stoploss of Rs 350.

December 23, 2025· 12:16 IST

Pranay Aggarwal,Director and CEO of Stoxkart

The primary market in 2025 showed a healthy and mature performance, even though it was not uniformly buoyant. IPO activity was driven more by quality than quantity, with a handful of large and fundamentally strong companies attracting the bulk of investor interest. India stood out as one of the leading global IPO markets, supported by strong domestic participation from retail and institutional investors.

While listing-day gains were more moderate compared to previous years, this reflected better pricing discipline rather than weakness. Overall, 2025 highlighted a more balanced and thoughtful primary market, where investors focused on sustainable businesses instead of chasing short-term hype.
