Closing Bell: Sensex settles 550 points lower from day's high; Nifty ends below 25,700; metals, FMCG drag

Selling pressure intensified in several heavyweight stocks within the Nifty 100 in intraday trade. Eternal topped the losers’ list, sliding nearly 3 percent on heavy volumes. Pharma stocks also remained under pressure, with Cipla and Sun Pharma both falling over 2 percent. Metal stocks added to the drag, as Hindustan Zinc and Hindalco Industries declined sharply. Weakness was also seen in Bharat Electronics, Avenue Supermarts, and Maruti Suzuki, while Jio Financial Services also traded lower, adding to the pressure on the index.

IT stocks led the gains within the Nifty 100 in intraday trade, reinforcing the sector’s leadership through the session. Infosys rose over 5 percent on strong volumes, followed by Tech Mahindra and LTIMindtree, both gaining close to 5 percent. Wipro and HCL Technologies also featured among the top gainers. Outside IT, buying interest was seen in select financials and cyclicals, with Punjab National Bank and Shriram Finance posting solid gains, while Bharat Petroleum and Samvardhana Motherson also traded higher.

Sectoral performance on the BSE remained uneven in late trade, with IT stocks standing out as the sole pocket of strength. The BSE IT index jumped 3.17 percent to 37,694, extending recent gains, even as it remained sharply lower on a one-year basis. Most other sectors traded under pressure. BSE Capital Goods slipped 1.43 percent, while BSE Consumer Durables fell 1.4 percent and BSE Healthcare declined 1.16 percent. Auto, FMCG and power stocks also remained weak, reflecting broad-based profit-taking. BSE Metal eased 0.76 percent despite strong longer-term gains, while BSE Realty and BSE Oil & Gas traded marginally higher.

Central Bank of India reported a strong December-quarter performance, with net profit rising 31.6 percent year-on-year to Rs 1,262 crore, compared with Rs 959 crore a year ago. Net interest income was largely flat, easing 1 percent to Rs 3,503 crore from Rs 3,540 crore YoY. Asset quality improved sequentially, with gross NPA declining to 2.70 percent from 3.01 percent QoQ, while net NPA eased to 0.45 percent from 0.48 percent. In absolute terms, gross NPAs fell to Rs 8,726 crore from Rs 8,827 crore QoQ, while net NPAs stood at Rs 1,413 crore, compared with Rs 1,366 crore in the previous quarter. Other income jumped sharply to Rs 1,935 crore from Rs 1,229 crore YoY. The stock was trading 2.1 percent higher at Rs 39.10 in late trade.

Outside the frontline benchmarks, market performance was uneven in late trade. Banking indices continued to outperform, with the Nifty Bank at 60,013, up 0.73 percent, and the BSE Bankex rising 0.97 percent to 67,833, extending their strong one-year gains of over 21 percent.

In the broader market, the Nifty Midcap 100 was at 59,875, up 0.18 percent, while the BSE Midcap index edged up 0.14 percent to 46,178. Smallcaps underperformed, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 down 0.24 percent at 17,369 and the BSE Smallcap index slipping 0.29 percent to 49,783, reflecting sustained pressure in the broader space despite relative resilience in banking stocks.

The Nifty 50 slipped to 25,680.9, up just 15 points or 0.06 percent, effectively erasing nearly all gains for the day and trading about 190 points below its intraday high. The Sensex was at 83,542.66, up 160 points or 0.19 percent, but had given up most of its earlier gains, sitting nearly 600 points off the day’s high as late-session selling weighed on the market.

The shares of IT companies jumped in trade on January 16 as strong Q3 earnings of Infosys boosted investor sentiment. Sectoral trends were mixed in late trade, with Nifty IT leading gains, up 3.1 percent on the day, even as it remained down nearly 10 percent over the past one year. Nifty PSU Bank also outperformed, rising 0.8 percent, and continues to post strong one-year gains of over 42 percent. On the downside, Nifty Pharma slipped 1.1 percent, while Nifty Metal fell 0.6 percent and Nifty Energy dropped 0.8 percent. FMCG and media stocks also remained under pressure, reflecting continued sectoral divergence despite broader market resilience.

The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts reported a strong set of October-December quarter numbers, with net profit jumping to Rs 148 crore from Rs 56.4 crore a year ago. Revenue grew 23.5 percent year-on-year to Rs 457.4 crore, while EBITDA rose 27.2 percent to Rs 238 crore. Operating performance improved further, with EBITDA margin expanding to 52 percent from 50.5 percent in the year-ago quarter.

Selling pressure in select heavyweights continued to weigh on the Nifty, with financials and defensives emerging as the biggest drags on the index. ICICI Bank was the single largest negative contributor despite a modest decline, followed by Bharat Electronics and ITC. Among other notable laggards, Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, and HDFC Life Insurance also exerted pressure on the benchmark. Weakness in Cipla and Hindalco added to the drag, while marginal declines in Reliance Industries and Axis Bank further capped gains in the index.

Market breadth weakened in late trade, even as headline indices remained marginally higher. The Nifty 50 was up 36.8 points, or 0.14 percent, at 25,702.4, with 24 stocks advancing and 26 declining. The broader Nifty 500 edged up 0.05 percent to 23,488.7, but declines (288 stocks) outweighed advances (210 stocks), pointing to fading momentum beneath the surface.

With markets rising strongly after two-day fall, a mild intraday profit booking was seen on the indices with investors awaiting further cues from Q3 results of Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank. RIL results will be announced in post-market hours of January 16 while ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank results will be out on January 17. Bank Nifty also saw mild profit booking as it fell below the 60,000-level after reclaiming the milestone after four days.

Indian equity benchmarks slipped further from their intraday peaks in afternoon trade while remaining in positive territory. The Sensex was at 83,618.14, up 235 points or 0.28 percent, but around 500 points off the day’s high. The Nifty traded at 25,714.15, up 48.55 points or 0.19 percent, having shed about 160 points from its intraday high, signalling some profit-taking after a strong morning run-up.

Bharat Forge shares traded higher after the company announced it has secured an order worth Rs 300 crore under emergency procurement for indigenous unmanned systems. The stock was up 1.05 percent at Rs 1,462.40 in intraday trade.

Broader markets were mixed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 at 60,121.45, up 0.59 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 was at 17,411.25, flat on the day. The Nifty Next 50 traded at 69,006.05, up 0.32 percent, extending modest gains.

Benchmarks indices remained in the green on Friday, with banking stocks lending support. The Sensex was at 83,759.66, up 0.45 percent, while the Nifty was near 25,760, up 0.37 percent. The Bank Nifty outperformed at 60,033.15, up 0.76 percent, and is up 21.82 percent over the past one year.

Select Nifty Next 50 stocks also scaled fresh 52-week highs in intraday trade on Friday, indicating sustained buying interest beyond the frontline index. Punjab National Bank touched a new one-year high of Rs 132.79, while Vedanta climbed to a 52-week high of Rs 686. Bank of Baroda also featured among the gainers, with Bank of Baroda hitting a fresh 52-week high of Rs 313.35 during the session.

Three Nifty 50 stocks touched fresh 52-week highs in intraday trade on Friday, reflecting continued buying interest in select large caps. State Bank of India hit a new one-year high of Rs 1,047.45, while Tata Steel scaled a 52-week high of Rs 191. Axis Bank also joined the list, with Axis Bank touching a fresh 52-week high of Rs 1,309 during the session.

Federal Bank’s asset quality improved sequentially in the December quarter, with gross NPA declining to 1.72 percent from 1.83 percent QoQ and net NPA easing to 0.42 percent from 0.48 percent. In absolute terms, gross NPAs fell to Rs 4,447 crore from Rs 4,532 crore QoQ, while net NPAs declined to Rs 1,068 crore from Rs 1,165 crore. Provisions stood at Rs 332 crore, lower than Rs 363 crore in the previous quarter but higher than Rs 292 crore a year ago.

Federal Bank reported a better-than-expected set of December-quarter results, with net profit rising 9 percent year-on-year to Rs 1,041 crore, beating the CNBC-TV18 poll estimate of Rs 1,000 crore. Net interest income also grew 9 percent on-year to Rs 2,653 crore, ahead of the Street estimate of Rs 2,563 crore.

Indian equity benchmarks continued to trade firmly higher around noon, holding on to most of their morning gains. The Sensex was up 476 points, or 0.57 percent, at 83,859, while the Nifty rose 125 points, or 0.49 percent, to 25,790. Market breadth remained positive, with advances continuing to outnumber declines, even as indices stayed off their intraday highs.
