Closing Bell: Sensex gains over 308 pts, Nifty above 23,550; Power Grid, Wipro, ICICI Bank, Titan top gainers

The Indian market touched record highs again, and is gradually expanding the gains achieved following the national election. It is responding positively to the upcoming budget, which is anticipated to strike a balance between growth and populism. Similarly, it is also taking cues from positive global market trends, with the US moving steadily towards the presidential election in November. Market volatility has decreased over the month, which is contributing to a short-term trend.

A gradual upside momentum with range bound action continued in the market on Tuesday and Nifty closed the day higher by 92 points. After opening with a positive note, the market shifted into a range bound movement with positive bias for better part of session. New all time high was registered at 23579 levels and the opening upside gap remains unfilled.

A small negative candle was formed at the highs on the daily chart with minor lower shadow. Technically, this pattern indicates a formation of doji pattern at the new highs (not a classical one). Normally, such doji formations after a reasonable upmove or at the new swing highs signal caution for longs at the highs. But, having this formed this pattern amidst a range movement, the negative prediction of this pattern could be less.

The short-term trend of Nifty continues to be positive with range bound action. Having sustained above the hurdle of 23515 levels (1.382% Fibonacci extension), one may expect Nifty to move towards the next resistance of 1.786% Fib extension at 23950 levels in the near term. Immediate support is placed at 23450.

Key benchmark indices continued their record breaking spree as renewed FII buying interest coupled with moderating domestic inflation has raised hopes of a rate cut by this year end. Although monsoon has made a steady start, investors are hoping for a pick-up in rain activity over the next few weeks that would boost consumption, particularly rural areas, and prop up overall growth in the remaining quarters of this fiscal.

Markets began the week with modest gains, continuing the prevailing positive trend. After opening with a gap up, the Nifty traded within a narrow range throughout the day and closed at 23,560, up by 0.40%. Sectoral performance was mixed, with gains in Realty, private banks, and IT, while pharma, metal, and FMCG sectors lagged. The broader indices maintained their positive momentum, reaching new record highs.

We anticipate the prevailing trend to persist, with Nifty gradually moving towards the 24,000 level. Additionally, renewed strength in the banking index supports our bullish outlook. Therefore, we recommend maintaining a "buy on dips" strategy, focusing on stocks demonstrating higher relative strength.

Following a strong start, the Nifty remained within a range as the index formed another day of muted movement on the daily chart. For the last few days, Nifty has been moving sideways on an intraday basis, but eventually, it has moved up above 23,500. The trend looks positive from here, with support placed at 23,300. A fall below 23,300 might induce selling pressure. On the higher end, the index might move towards 23,800.

Today, the benchmark indices registered a fresh all time high of 23579.05/77366.77. After a promising uptrend rally the Nifty ends 92 points higher while the Sensex up by 308 points. Among Sectors, Reality and Private bank indices outperformed, both the indices rallied over 1 percent. Technically, after a gap up opening market held the positive momentum throughout the day. On daily and intraday charts, it is holding higher, high and higher low formation, which supports further uptrend from the current levels.

For the trend following traders now, 23500/77000 would be the key support level. As long as the market is trading above the same, the bullish sentiment is likely to continue. On the higher side, market could rally up to 23700-23750/77600-77800 . On the other side, below 23500/77000 the sentiment could change. Below the same traders may prefer to exit out from the trading long positions.

Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group Co. plans to reduce its stake in Gland Pharma Ltd. through block deals after initial attempts to sell it in one transaction fell through, Bloomberg reported. The Chinese company aims to start by selling a 6% stake in the Indian drugmaker next week, with further sales planned in the coming months unless buyout firms propose an alternative offer. Fosun International Ltd.'s listed arm currently holds approximately 58% of Gland Pharma, valued at Rs303 billion ($3.6 billion).

Pharma company stocks are down as Citi warns of declining generic drug prices in the US. Lupin drops 2.1%, Aurobindo Pharma 3.8%, Dr. Reddy’s 1.6%. Citi analyst Vivek Agrawal notes a significant price decline in generic drugs from March to June, affecting top products.

Alkem Laboratories saw a large deal, with 1.7 percent equity stake changing hands for a sum of Rs 1,011 crore on June 18. A total of 20.4 lakh shares of Alkem Labs were sold for Rs 4,962 per share. At about 1.45 pm, Alkem Labs' stock was trading down 0.8 percent at Rs 5,061, recovering from the intraday low of Rs 4,908. READ MORE

RITES share price gained on June 18 after the company signed an memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), a statutory body under the Ministry of Power.

Both the companies will collaborate for the comprehensive maintenance and operational management of railway sidings, signalling and telecommunication (S&T) systems, and 25KV Overhead Electrification (OHE) isolators across DVC’s private railway network in West Bengal and Jharkhand, as per the company's release.

The maintenance work entrusted to RITES will include the AMC for railway sidings, O&M of S&T systems, and operation of 25KV OHE isolators.

The Company has received an adverse judgement passed by United States District Court, Northern District of Texas, Dallas Division.

The Court ordered that the company is liable to Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC)/ DXC Technology Company (DXC) for USD 56,151,583 in compensatory damages and USD 112,303,166 in exemplary damages.

The Court also assessed that the company is liable for USD 25,773,576.60 in prejudgment interest through June 13, 2024.

The Court also passed certain injunctions and other reliefs against the Company.

It has secured an order from the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Hyderabad for constructing a super-speciality hospital at Gachibowli in the city. The scope includes civil structures, finishes, façade, interiors, MEP services, paramedical and external development jobs, including landscaping. The total built up area is 1.1 mn sq ft.

Further, an order has been secured from a prestigious client for the construction of office space in Mumbai with an approximate built-up area of 13 lakh sq ft. The scope includes civil and composite steel structure for 2B+G+6P+18 office floors.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 20 months.

Fitch Ratings on Tuesday raised India's growth forecast for current fiscal to 7.2 per cent, from 7 per cent projected in March, citing a recovery in consumer spending and increased investment.

BLSE has entered into a definitive Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) to acquire a 55 percent controlling interest in Aadifidelis Solutions for an enterprise value of approximately Rs 190 crores.

BLSE will make an upfront investment (Primary and Secondary) of approximately Rs 71 crore with balance consideration being deferred linked to achievement of milestones in FY2025. The acquisition will be an all-cash deal. The transaction will be completedin Q2 FY2025.

Also clarified that labour for the associate company is supplied by contractors. It may be the fault of the contractors who may not have got proper age verification done of the workers being allowed to work at that company.

Gautam Adani and companies from the Adani Group acquired over a 2 percent stake in Adani Enterprises through open market purchases from September 2023 to June 2024, as reported on June 14.

Prior to these acquisitions, the combined voting capital held by the acquirers and the promoter group was 71.95 percent. Following the purchases, this stake increased by 2.02 percent, bringing their total voting rights to 73.95 percent.

Paytm, also known as One97 Communications Ltd., is reportedly in advanced discussions with Zomato Ltd. to sell its movie and events ticketing business.

This move is part of Paytm's strategy to revamp amid declining sales. While talks are progressing, there are other interested parties involved. The discussions are ongoing, and a final decision has not yet been reached, according to a Bloomberg report.

On the back of strong global cues, the Indian indices opened higher on June 18 with Nifty above 23500.

The Sensex was up 179.47 points or 0.23 percent at 77,172.24, and the Nifty was up 60.60 points or 0.26 percent at 23,526.20. About 2189 shares advanced, 564 shares declined, and 186 shares unchanged.

Adani Enterprises, M&M, Wipro, Adani Ports and ONGC were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers were Dr Reddy's Labs, Maruti Suzuki, TCS, Divis Labs and HDFC Life.

The benchmark Sensex and Nifty indices are expected to open positive on June 18, following GIFT Nifty trends indicating a gain of 120 points for the broader index.

After a gap up opening Nifty can find support at 23,400 followed by 23,300 and 23,200. On the higher side, 23,550 can be an immediate resistance, followed by 23,650 and 23,700.

The charts of Bank Nifty indicate that it may get support at 49,800, followed by 49,700 and 49,500. If the index advances further, 50,200 would be the initial key resistance, followed by 50,350 and 50,500.

We have seen a strong up move in the Indian markets on Friday with Nifty closing at all-time high levels. Bank Nifty also managed to close above 50000 levels which indicate positive signals for the markets. Traders can hold with a trailing stop loss of 23300 on a closing basis.

Following an early indication from GIFT Nifty, a strong opening at a fresh record is expected for the Indian equities. We have been cautiously bullish on the Automobile segment as the rally in the sector is overstretched and warrants a healthy correction. The performance of heavyweight Reliance is likely to decide the future trend of the Energy sector as the stock is on the verge of giving a breakout from a bullish Flag and Pole formation.

Gas stocks also look strong (IGL, Gujarat Gas, and Petronet). Despite the negative performance of the FMCG segment, Sugar counters were the star performers and some of them are set to give a major breakout (Andhra Sugar, Balrampur Chini, and Dalmia Sugar).

From the Metal space, SAIL looks strong as it has given a breakout from a Bullish Flag and Pole Formation. With a stock-specific approach, we are bullish on the Pharma sector (Cipla, and Natco Pharma).

From our Fundamental Coverage universe, some stocks are strong on a technical front namely ACGL, Max Healthcare, Salzer Electronics, Supreme Petro, and Ultramarine Pigments. From the Mid and Smallcaps, we found a few stocks that are out of consolidation, namely JK Paper, Mayur Uniquoters Ltd, and Praj Industries.

Indian rupee opened higher at 83.52 per dollar versus previous close of 83.56

The Sensex was up 175.40 points or 0.23 percent at 77,168.17, and the Nifty was up 49.80 points or 0.21 percent at 23,515.40.

The undercurrent of the market continues to be bullish. Sustained huge domestic flows is the principal driver of this rally. It is also important to understand that there is fundamental support to the rally from the strong economic growth and good corporate earnings. Global support from the mother market US, which is setting new records, also is a positive factor.

Since Nifty is currently trading at around 21 times FY25 estimated earnings, there is no room for further sharp rally from the current levels. Liquidity flows may sustain the outperformance of the broader market. But valuation comfort in this space is extremely low. So investors may focus on fairly valued largecaps, particularly in the banking space and also the leading auto stocks where the high valuations can be justified by their growth prospects.

Alembic Pharmaceuticals has received final approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Icatibant Injection, 30 mg/3 mL (10 mg/mL) Single-Dose Prefilled Syringe.

India's coal import rose by 13.2 percent to 26.10 million tonne (MT) in April 2024 as buyers took fresh positions amid early onset of summer.

The country had imported 23.05 MT of coal in the year-ago period, according to data compiled by B2B e-commerce company mjunction services ltd.

This comes amid coal and mines minister G Kishan Reddy stating that India should increase domestic production of the fossil fuel and reduce coal imports.

"India's coal and coke imports in April 2024 through the major and non-major ports increased by 13.2 per cent over April 2023," the data showed.
