Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities

Nifty witnessed sharp breakout on Friday and surpassed the crucial hurdles of around 26200-26300 levels and zoomed into new all-time highs at 26340. After opening on a positive note, the market continued to move up in the early to mid-part of the session. Minor dip was seen towards the end and Nifty bounced back subsequently and closed at the highs.

A long bull candle was formed on the daily chart which indicates a decisive break out of the recent consolidation movement. This is positive development and one may expect this upside momentum to continue for the short term.

The underlying trend of Nifty is sharply up. The next upside target to be watched for the next 1-2 weeks is around 26750 (61.8% Fibonacci Extension-taken from the swings of April low-June high and Aug low). Immediate support is placed at 26200.

Abhinav Tiwari Research Analyst at Bonanza

Today, the Indian equity markets continued their positive momentum, with benchmark indices rising for the second consecutive session. The rally was supported by strong domestic indicators such as healthy GST collections, encouraging auto sales trends, and excitement around a major merger in the QSR space. The Sensex closed around 85,762, up nearly 0.67%, while the Nifty 50 ended near 26,328, also gaining about 0.7% and marking a fresh record high.

Buying interest was broad-based, led by auto, metal and select financial stocks, while FMCG shares underperformed. Positive domestic cues helped markets remain firm throughout the session, even as global signals remained mixed.

A key sentiment booster was the release of December 2025 GST collection data. Provisional numbers showed gross GST collections of around Rs 1.75 lakh crore, reflecting a 6.1% YoY growth. This pointed to resilient consumer demand and continued formalization of the economy. Strong tax collections also reinforced confidence in fiscal stability, supporting banking, auto, and discretionary consumption stocks.

The auto sector was another major contributor to gains. Early monthly dispatch trends indicated healthy year-end retail demand, particularly in passenger vehicles, SUVs, and premium two- wheelers. Expectations of a gradual recovery in rural demand and sustained replacement demand in urban areas supported sentiment across leading auto manufacturers and ancillary companies.

QSR stocks saw sharp gains following the announcement of an amalgamation between Devyani International and Sapphire Foods. The proposed merger, to be completed through a share swap effective 1 April 2026, will create one of India’s largest KFC and Pizza Hut franchise platforms. The combined entity is expected to generate Rs 210-225 crore in annual synergies by the second full year, improving growth prospects and profitability.

In the near term, the market outlook remains positive but stock-specific, with gains driven mainly by domestic factors rather than global cues. Strong GST collections and healthy auto demand support consumption, banking, and select cyclical stocks. However, with indices at record highs, valuations are stretched, leaving little margin for earnings disappointments.

Taking Stock: Nifty ends at new record high, Sensex up 573 pts; auto, realty, financials shine

January 02, 2026· 16:07 IST

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets extended their gains on Friday and reclaimed record-high levels, marking a strong start to the New Year. The Nifty maintained a positive bias throughout the session and closed near the day’s high at 26,335, registering a gain of 0.73%. Sectoral participation was broad-based, with all sectors except FMCG contributing to the advance. Energy, realty and metal stocks emerged as the top performers. The broader markets moved in tandem with the benchmark, as midcap and smallcap indices gained between 0.78% and 1.03%, reflecting a clear improvement in market breadth.

Sentiment was supported by positive sector-specific developments, particularly stronger auto sales trends and an improving demand outlook across cyclical sectors. Select index heavyweights provided additional support, enabling the market to sustain its upward momentum despite the absence of strong global triggers, as several overseas markets remained closed due to holidays. Meanwhile, continued weakness in tobacco-related stocks weighed on the FMCG space following recent tax-related developments.

As anticipated, the Nifty has decisively crossed the key resistance at 26,200 and moved to a fresh record high. The prevailing trend remains positive, with the index now poised to gradually test the 26,500–26,700 zone in the near term. With broad sectoral participation excluding FMCG, participants are advised to focus on stock selection based on relative sector strength and favourable risk–reward opportunities.

January 02, 2026· 16:03 IST

Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities

Nifty broke out of the previous day’s narrow consolidation range of 26,113–26,198 and steadily moved higher as the session progressed. The index hit an all-time high of 26,340 today before finally closing at 26,328.55. On the daily chart, it has formed a sizeable bullish candle, indicating strong buying interest. The RSI has given a trendline breakout and is now settled above 60, signaling strengthening bullish momentum.

On the sectoral front, Nifty CPSE ended the day as the top sectoral gainer, followed by Nifty PSE. On the other hand, Nifty FMCG emerged as the lone sectoral loser. With regards to stocks, Coal India & NTPC emerged as the top stock gainers amongst the Nifty pack while ITC & Kotak Bank emerged as the top two losers.

The Midcap index has staged a sharp recovery after finding support near its 50-day EMA four sessions ago. Over the past three trading days, the index has gained 2.42%, reflecting renewed buying interest. Momentum is gradually building in the midcap space, backed by strong volumes. The recent price action suggests potential continuation of the recovery in the near term.

Small caps continued their upward momentum, extending gains and maintaining a higher-high, higher-low structure since mid-December. The index now trades above all key moving averages, indicating a structurally strong trend. Improved price action and sustained participation suggest growing confidence in the broader market, with momentum favouring further upside as long as the index holds above its recent swing lows.

The market breadth remained steady, with the advance-decline ratio skewed in the favor of bulls at days close. A total of 367 stocks out of the Nifty 500 universe ended in the green, indicating broad based participation.

Nifty View

Going ahead, for Nifty, the zone of 26,410-26,440 will act as an immediate resistance. Any sustained move above the 26,440 level could lead to Index extending its pullback higher towards the 26,520 level, followed by 26,600. On the downside, 26100 is expected to act as the immediate support followed by the 20-day EMA zone of 26,050-26,000.

Bank Nifty View

After breaking above the downward-sloping trendline breakout on the daily chart, Bank Nifty extended its upward move and scaled a fresh all-time high of 60,204. The price action remains supported by strong momentum indicators. RSI continues to hold above 60, DI+ has crossed above DI- on the ADX indicator and the MACD line has moved above the signal line, reinforcing the ongoing bullish structure.

Going ahead, for Bank Nifty, the zone of 60,600 will act as an immediate resistance. Any sustained move above the 60,600 level could lead to the rally extending further in the Index until 60,900 level, followed by 61,200. On the downside, the zone of 59,700-59,600 will act as a strong support for the index.

January 02, 2026· 15:55 IST

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities

The index has broken above its previous swing high, reinforcing a positive trend bias. The bullish crossover of the 20 EMA and 50 EMA further strengthens the upward structure. Additionally, the daily RSI has broken out of its prior consolidation phase, signalling a pickup in momentum.

The trend is expected to remain firm in the near to short term, with a buy-on-dips approach favoring the bulls as long as the index sustains above 26,000. On the upside, a decisive move above 26,350 could open the door for an advance towards 26,600 in the short term.

Bank Nifty remains a clear outperformer versus the Nifty in recent sessions. The falling trendline breakout and recovery above critical short-term moving averages have strengthened the bullish setup. The index has entered a strong momentum phase, with a move beyond 60,500 appearing increasingly probable in the near term. On the downside, support is placed at 60,000; a decisive break below this level could cool off the ongoing sharp uptrend.

Rajeev Sharan, Head – Criteria, Model Development & Research, Brickwork Ratings

The rally in gold, silver, and copper through 2025 was more than a market surge—it was a signal of deeper economic shifts. A 79% increase in gold price and a historic 140% surge in silver reflected two major trends: countries moving away from holding dollars as reserves, and rising prices eroding the value of paper money worldwide. Copper's 40% climb signals the energy transition is no longer a buzzword but a supply-constrained reality with no viable substitutes at scale.

For India, the paradox is acute. The import duty cuts on gold and silver from 15% to 6% should have catalysed consumption; however, the unchanged 3% GST continues to limit retail demand. Meanwhile, 50% US tariffs on jewellery exports create headwinds that lower import tariffs cannot fully offset. India’s copper demand is poised to accelerate as data centre capacity expands to 4–8 GW by 2030.

Looking ahead to 2026, the key question is whether central banks’ sustained gold purchases can uphold valuations if a technical reset emerges. Nevertheless, the underlying drivers—inflation, currency weakness, and geopolitical uncertainty—remain strong enough to overcome any correction, keeping gold prices anchored in the USD 4,500–5,000 range.

January 02, 2026· 15:47 IST

Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst Lemonn Markets Desk

Indian equity benchmarks ended Friday with strong gains, supported by firm global cues and buying in index heavyweights, as the Nifty scaled a fresh lifetime high and the Sensex closed near 85,772. Broad-based buying, led by metals, banks and auto stocks, kept market breadth positive, while steady domestic institutional inflows helped offset persistent foreign selling. Optimism around an improving earnings outlook, healthy auto sales, positive bank business updates and expectations of reforms and a potential US trade deal further buoyed sentiment.

A marginally stronger rupee and supportive global markets added to the momentum. From a technical perspective, the breakout above key consolidation levels reinforces the bullish bias, with 25,900 emerging as an immediate support zone for the Nifty.
