Indian benchmark indices ended on a negative note with Nifty below 24,600 on May 13. At close, the Sensex was down 1,281.68 points or 1.55 percent at 81,148.22, and the Nifty was down 346.35 points or 1.39 percent at 24,578.35.

After witnessing a stellar upmove on Monday, Nifty slipped into weakness subsequently on Tuesday and closed the day lower by 346 points. After opening with a negative note, the market witnessed selling pressure since opening and the weakness amidst range movement continued in the mid to later part of the session.
A reasonable negative candle was formed on the daily chart that placed beside the long bull candle of previous session. Tuesday's weakness has partially erased the hefty gains made on Monday.
The upside breakout of 12th May is still intact and the Nifty is currently placed at the key lower supports of 24600-24500 levels (support as per change in polarity and the mid part of long bull candle of 12th May).
The short-term uptrend remains intact and the Nifty is expected to show bounce back from near the crucial supports of around 24500-24400 levels in the next few sessions. Immediate resistance is placed at 24800 levels.
Shrikant Chouhan, Head-Equity Research, Kotak Securities
Today, the benchmark indices witnessed profit booking at higher levels. The Nifty ends 346 points lower, while the Sensex was down by 1281 points. Among sectors, the Defense index outperformed, rallied 4.10 percent, whereas the IT index lost the most, shed nearly 2.5 percent.
Technically, after a muted open, the market consistently faced selling pressure at higher levels. On daily charts, it has formed a bearish candle, which supports temporary weakness. However, the short term texture of the market is still in to the positive side. For traders now, 24,500/81000 and 24,450/80800 would act as key support zones. If the market succeeds in trading above these levels, it could retest the level of 24,800–24,900/81800-82000. On the flip side, below 24,450/80800, the uptrend would become vulnerable. If the market falls below this level, traders may prefer to exit their long positions.

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities
The index slipped lower as traders booked short-term profits. However, sentiment is likely to remain positive in the near term, despite some profit-taking following the recent sharp rise. The index continues to trade above the short-term moving average, confirming a bullish trend. Additionally, it has been sustaining above the previous consolidation zone. In the short term, the index may continue its upward movement with the potential to reach 25,350. On the downside, support is placed at 24,400. A buy-on-dips strategy may be favorable as long as the index remains above this level.
Sensex Today | April CPI Inflation at 3.16% versus 3.34%, MoM
Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking
Markets took a breather after a phenomenal start to the week, ending the session with a loss of over one percent. After a flat opening, the Nifty index gradually drifted lower throughout the day and finally settled at 24,578.35. Profit-taking was evident across the board, with IT, FMCG, and auto sectors emerging as the top losers. In contrast, stocks from PSU banking, pharma, and the defense space managed to edge higher. The broader markets showed a mixed trend, with the small-cap index ending in the green, while the mid-cap index closed nearly unchanged.
The dip in the index reflects caution among participants despite easing geopolitical tensions and stable global cues. However, we expect the overall tone to remain positive, given the noticeable support in the 24,400–24,600 zone. The focus should remain on identifying key sectors and themes showing relative strength and using intermediate pauses to accumulate quality stocks.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
The domestic market witnessed profit booking today, following yesterday’s sharp rally. The relief-driven surge—fuelled by easing global and domestic risks, including a reduction in trade war tensions and Indo-Pak geopolitical stress—appears to be taking a breather. This consolidation is primarily affecting large-cap stocks, while mid- and small-cap segments continue to gain traction. This divergence is expected to persist, supported by broad-based earnings improvements reflected in Q4 results so far.
Looking ahead, there is increasing optimism around FY26 earnings growth, underpinned by supportive fiscal and monetary policies, a rebound in external demand, a favorable monsoon outlook, and declining inflation and interest rates. These factors collectively suggest that midcaps are well-positioned to catch up and potentially outperform in the coming quarters.

Today, the Indian stock market closed sharply lower after the previous session's historic gains. The Sensex fell by about 1,282 points (around 1.5%), ending near 81,148, while the Nifty 50 declined approximately 346 points (-1.39%) to close at 24,578. Key heavyweights like Infosys dropped over 3%, dragging the IT index down by more than 2.42%, while financials and FMCG also saw notable declines.
The downside was primarily triggered by profit-taking and cautious investor sentiment following the sharp run-up, coupled with concerns over mixed corporate earnings results and global cues.
Defensive sectors like PSU banks and pharma showed resilience, with some stocks such as Bharat Electronics and Hindustan Aeronautics gaining 3-7%, reflecting ongoing interest in defence amid geopolitical developments. Going forward, investors will closely watch upcoming inflation data and quarterly earnings for further direction, with expectations of volatility but underlying bullishness intact.

Dilip Parmar – Senior Research Analyst, HDFC Securities
The Indian rupee relinquished intraday gains as domestic equities weakened and traders unwound their long positions. This downturn was further exacerbated by broader weakness in Asian currencies. Meanwhile, rising crude oil prices prompted Indian oil importers to increase their hedging activities.
Looking ahead, the USDINR spot rate is expected to encounter resistance around 86.30 and find support near 84.70.
Currency Check | Rupee closes flat
Indian rupee ended flat at 85.34 per dollar on Tuesday versus Friday's close of 85.37.
Market Close | Sensex down 1,282 pts, Nifty below 24,600; IT, FMCG worst hit
Indian benchmark indices ended on a negative note with Nifty below 24,600 on May 13.
At close, the Sensex was down 1,281.68 points or 1.55 percent at 81,148.22, and the Nifty was down 346.35 points or 1.39 percent at 24,578.35. About 2507 shares advanced, 1311 shares declined, and 131 shares unchanged.
BSE Midcap index ended flat, while Smallcap index added1 percent.
Among sectors, capital goods, media, PSU Bank, pharma indices rose 1-1.6 percent, while IT, metal, FMCG, oil & gas, realty indices shed 0.9-2.5 percent.
Power Grid Corp, Infosys, Eternal, TCS, HCL Technologies were among top losers on the Nifty, while gainers included Bharat Electronics, Jio Financial, Hero MotoCorp, Dr Reddy's Labs and Sun Pharma.
Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan
Indian Rupee opened strong amid ceasefire between India and Pakistan and easing trade tariff tensions after US and China slashed proposed increase in tariffs on each other. However, Rupee lost all gains on rising crude oil prices, strong US Dollar and weak domestic markets.
We expect Rupee to trade with a positive bias amid de-escalating geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan on the back of ceasefire. Rise in risk appetite in global markets amid easing trade tariff tensions between US and China. However, surge in global crude oil prices and fall in domestic markets may weigh on the rupee. Any FII outflows may also pressurise the Rupee. Traders may take cues from CPI inflation data from the US. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 85 to Rs 86.
