Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking
Markets traded with a negative bias on Friday and remained under pressure for most of the session, with the Nifty slipping sharply as selling in heavyweight technology stocks intensified. After a weak start, the benchmark index moved in a narrow range during the first half, but the decline deepened as the session progressed. It eventually settled near the day’s low to close at 25,471.10. Selling was broad-based, with IT stocks among the top losers, while weakness was also visible in the metal, realty, and FMCG segments.
Investor sentiment weakened as global technology stocks stayed under pressure, reinforcing risk-off behaviour in domestic markets. In addition, the absence of any fresh positive domestic triggers kept the overall mood subdued.
The sharp fall in the IT pack has significantly altered the market tone, and a break below the 25,400 mark could open the door for a move toward the 25,100 gap area. On the upside, the 25,700–26,000 zone is likely to act as a strong resistance band in case of any recovery. Apart from IT, FMCG and realty also appear vulnerable to further declines, while banking, auto, energy, and select metal stocks may continue to show relatively better strength. Participants should align their positions accordingly and keep position sizes under control in light of the renewed weakness.

Abhinav Tiwari Research Analyst at Bonanza
Today, the equities continued their recent decline, ending sharply lower due to heavy sell off in every sector. The Sensex fell around 1,048 points to close near 82,626, while the Nifty 50 dropped by 1.30% to close around 25,471. Market breadth was clearly weak, with declining stocks outnumbering advancing ones.
The fall was mainly driven by the IT, metals, and realty sector. The Nifty IT index declined about 5% but recovered by the end of the day and closed around negative 1.44%. Large cap names such as Infosys, TCS, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra saw significant selling pressure. The weakness was triggered by a global selloff in technology stocks and rising concerns that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence could disrupt traditional IT outsourcing models.
Sentiment was further affected by sharp overnight declines in US-listed ADRs of Infosys and Wipro, along with a more than 2% drop in the Nasdaq ahead of key US inflation data. Strong US economic data have reduced expectations of early rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, putting pressure on global growth and technology stocks.
Selling was not limited to IT, as mid and small cap stocks fell between 1.7% and 2%, and most sectoral indices ended in the red. However, domestic focused sectors such as autos, capital goods, telecom, and financials continue to show relatively better earnings momentum, offering some medium term support despite near term volatility.

Nifty opened with a gap down and stayed confined to a 186-point range through the session. On the daily chart, it formed a bearish candle. Importantly, the index has slipped below its 20, 50 and 100-day EMAs, which weakens the short-term trend structure. In ADX, DI− has crossed above DI+, signalling rising bearish dominance, while RSI has dropped below the 50 mark and continues to trend lower which is another sign of fading momentum.
On the sectoral front, none of the sectors closed in the green. On the other hand, Nifty Metal ended the day as the top sectoral loser, closing the day 3.31% lower, followed by Nifty Capital Market. With regards to stocks, Bajaj Finance & Eicher Motors emerged as the top stock gainers amongst the Nifty pack while Hindalco & Hindustan Unilever emerged as the top two losers.
The Midcap index opened weak and drifted lower initially but saw a strong rebound from intraday lows before giving up gains in the second half of the day. The Index however found strong support from its 100-day EMA, indicating strong presence of buyers at lower levels despite the Intraday weakness.
The Smallcap index also formed a sizeable bearish candle with a minor lower wick, again indicating buying on dips. After slipping below its 20-day EMA during the session, it recovered during the day but failed to give a strong close above the same at day’s close.
The market breadth was weak as the advance-decline ratio was heavily skewed in the favour of bears at day’s close. A total of 431 stocks out of the Nifty 500 universe ended in the red.
Nifty View
Going ahead, the immediate support for Nifty is placed in the 25,450–25,400 zone. Any sustainable move below this zone could result in Nifty filling its gap on the downside and move towards 25,200, followed by 25,000 in the short term. On the upside, the 50-day EMA zone of 25,650–25,700 zone is likely to act as an immediate resistance.
Bank Nifty View
Bank Nifty traded within a 431-point range over the last four sessions and has now broken below the lower end of the consolidation zone. The breakdown was accompanied by a bearish daily candle. RSI, which had plateaued near 60, has started turning down, suggesting bulls are losing grip around the key support area.
For Bank Nifty, the immediate support is placed in the 20-day EMA zone of 60,000–59,900. Any sustained move below this zone could lead to Index extending its weakness on the downside towards 59,500, followed by 59,000 in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 60,500–60,600 zone is likely to act as an immediate support.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
Domestic equities ended lower following a highly volatile session, weighed down by weak global cues ahead of the upcoming US inflation data. Sentiment gains from the US–India trade deal have faded as renewed AI driven disruption fears weigh on risk appetite, with markets worrying that Indian IT firms dependent on labour arbitrage model may face tougher competitive pressure than their Nasdaq peers.
This cautious tone extended across the broader market, pulling all major indices into negative territory, with most sectors closing in the red.
Metal stocks saw profit booking amid a stronger dollar index, as reports of Russia’s return to the US dollar settlement system heightened expectations of potential sanctions relief and raised concerns over weaker realisations for metal companies. Realty stocks declined on the back of weak results and delayed launches.

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities
The Nifty opened gap-down, reflecting early weakness in IT stocks following negative cues from the US markets. At the end, the Nifty ended the session significantly lower. India VIX also moved back above its 200DMA, indicating rising fear among the market participants.
From a technical standpoint, the setup has turned relatively cautious, with the index slipping below its 20DMA for the first time in the past few sessions. Additionally, it has breached the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement of the prior upmove from 24,571 to 26,341.
With the index closing below the key support level of 25,500, the near-term bias appears weak, and there is potential for a decline toward the 25,000 mark in the short term. On the upside, immediate resistance is seen around 25,800.

Santosh Meena, Head of Research at swastika investmart
Today’s correction is primarily driven by a sharp sell-off in the IT sector, with the NIFTY IT declining nearly 5% and extending its multi-day losses. The weakness is largely attributed to rising global concerns around AI-led disruption, particularly after advancements by Anthropic, which have intensified fears that traditional, labor-intensive IT services models could face structural challenges.
The pressure was further amplified by weak cues from US technology stocks, diminishing hopes of near-term Fed rate cuts following stronger-than-expected US jobs data, profit booking after the recent market upmove, and broad-based weakness in metals and other cyclical sectors.
Overall, the correction reflects a mix of global uncertainty and sector-specific concerns rather than domestic structural weakness.

Sanjay Kumar, CEO & MD, Rassense
The spike in retail inflation during January 2026 is majorly due the rise in food prices along with alterations in components with 2023-24 as the base. Technically, it is a good sign that in-spite of the changes, inflationary trend has remained well-within the comfort band of the RBI.
This will help sustain household purchasing power and confidence, supporting continued spending on essential and discretionary good alike, keeping the pricing dynamics balanced. While this can be taken positively, it is critical to be watchful of how the situation takes shape as we proceed further into 2026, especially in the wake of economic volatilities due to global headwinds.

Swapnil Aggarwal, Director, VSRK Capital
Today’s weakness in Sensex and Nifty is largely driven by selling pressure in the IT sector, which is weighing on broader market sentiment. Concerns around global demand slowdown, cautious commentary from tech companies, and uncertainty related to AI-led disruptions and job losses have triggered profit booking after recent gains.
At present, this appears to be more of a sentiment-driven correction rather than the start of a deeper structural downturn. Domestic macro fundamentals remain relatively stable, but the market is lacking strong upward momentum, which may keep indices range-bound in the near term.
Investors should avoid panic reactions and adopt a staggered investment strategy. Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) or Systematic Transfer Plans (STPs) can help navigate volatility and average out costs. Instead of aggressive lump-sum investments, gradual allocation would be more prudent until clearer signs of strength and stability emerge in the market.

Pranay Aggarwal, Director and CEO of Stoxkart
Foreign Institutional Investors have started returning to Indian equities after three consecutive months of sustained selling, with inflows of nearly $1.7 billion so far in February. The clarity surrounding the India–US trade deal has played an important role in improving risk sentiment and reducing policy uncertainty, which has encouraged this shift. However, this appears to be a cautious reallocation rather than a decisive structural reversal.
While the recent buying signals improving confidence, overall flows for the year remain negative, and the sustainability of inflows will largely depend on global factors such as US interest rates, bond yields, dollar movement, earnings growth, and domestic valuations. The India–US trade agreement itself seems largely priced in, as markets have already rallied on tariff clarity and reduced downside risks. Going forward, FII participation is likely to remain selective and somewhat volatile, rather than translating into a consistent and aggressive buying cycle.
