Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities

Bears returned to the market as the Nifty slipped back after a one-day rebound. Thursday’s bounce was neither wholehearted nor convincing, leading to selling on Friday. Besides, investors preferred to stay light ahead of the weekend.

Technically, the index remains below the previous swing low, indicating continued bearishness.

In the short term, the index may continue to decline, with the potential to move towards 24,000 or lower. On the higher side, resistance is placed at 25,000; until this level is crossed decisively, the trend is likely to favor a sell-on-rise strategy.

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets traded under pressure on Friday, giving up part of the previous session’s gains amid cautious global sentiment and profit booking in select heavyweights. The Nifty opened on a subdued note and traded dull for most of the session. However, selling pressure in select heavyweights during the final hour pushed the index sharply lower, and it eventually closed near the day’s low at around the 24,450 level.

Sectoral participation largely mirrored the benchmark’s weakness, with banking, realty, and auto stocks emerging as key laggards. Meanwhile, selective buying in energy and IT counters offered some support and helped limit the overall decline. Interestingly, the broader indices showed relative resilience: the smallcap index ended almost unchanged while the midcap index declined by nearly half a percent.

Investor sentiment remained guarded amid lingering geopolitical uncertainties and elevated crude oil prices, which continue to influence global risk appetite. Participants also stayed selective ahead of the weekend, preferring to trim positions following the sharp swings witnessed earlier in the week.

The sharp swings in the Nifty index, combined with elevated volatility, indicate a cautious undertone. A break below the recent swing low of 24,300 could quickly drag the index toward the 24,000 level. Fresh weakness in the banking pack, which carries significant weight in the index, also adds to the negative bias. However, strength in select sectors and themes such as pharma, metal, PSE, and defense continues to offer buying opportunities on a rotational basis. Given the current setup, we maintain a cautious stance and recommend staying selective while focusing on strict risk management until the market stabilizes.

The Indian rupee has come under pressure as surging crude oil prices and a shift toward risk-aversion weigh on the currency. Heightened geopolitical uncertainty risks driving energy costs higher, which could widen the trade deficit and stoke inflationary pressures. As market sentiment favors the safe-haven US dollar, the rupee remains on a downward trajectory. Technically, the USD/INR spot pair finds immediate support at 91.40, with resistance capped at 91.85.

March 06, 2026· 16:00 IST

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities

After a fine recovery from the lows of 24300 in the last couple of sessions, Nifty failed to sustain the gains on Friday and slipped into weakness by 315 points. After opening on a weak note, the market shifted into a range bound action for better part of the session. Weakness got intensified towards the end and Nifty finally closed at the lows.

A long bear candle was formed on the daily chart beside the bull candle of Thursday. The present market action signals that Nifty has negated the bullish sentiment that was created after the sharp gain of Thursday. This is not a good sign and it suggests that the Nifty could retest the Wednesday's low of 24300 in the short term. Immediate resistance is placed at 24700.

Taking Stock: Bears back in action; Sensex tumbles 1,097 pts, Nifty slips to 24,450

March 06, 2026· 15:55 IST

Abhinav Tiwari Research Analyst at Bonanza

Indian equity markets extended their losing streak on Friday, March 6, 2026, ending the week on a weak note. The Sensex tanked nearly 1,000 points to close around 79,212, while the Nifty 50 slipped below the 24,500 mark, settling around 24,460. Selling pressure was concentrated largely in large- cap financial stocks, though the broader markets showed relative resilience, with the Nifty Midcap

index declining just 0.3 percent and the Nifty Smallcap index eking out marginal gains.

Sectorally, the session was a mixed bag. Auto, realty, PSU Bank, and private bank indices declined between 0.5 and 1 percent, weighing heavily on benchmark indices. Financial stocks were the biggest drag as concerns over valuations and foreign institutional selling resurfaced. On the brighter side, the defence index surged nearly 3 percent, buoyed by fresh momentum around domestic defence orders and strategic partnerships. Energy, IT, and oil and gas indices also posted modest gains in the range of 0.3 to 0.6 percent.

The Indian rupee continued to face headwinds, weakening further to trade at 91.69 per US dollar intraday, compared to the previous close of 91.60, reflecting sustained capital outflows and a cautious global risk environment. Global markets remained under pressure amid lingering concerns over US tariff policies, slowing growth signals, and tightening financial conditions in developed economies.

On the corporate front, there were several noteworthy developments. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kalyani Strategic Systems to jointly develop indigenous advanced naval systems, unmanned platforms, and strategic maritime capabilities for both domestic and global markets, reinforcing India’s push for self-reliance in defence. Railway PSU stocks were in the spotlight, rallying as much as 11 percent following reports of a potential mega merger between RVNL and IRCON, which could create a formidable rail infrastructure entity.

Meanwhile, Reliance Consumer Products inked an MoU with Finland’s Fazer Foods to establish a long-term strategic partnership for producing, marketing, and distributing premium branded chocolates across India.

Markets are likely to stay volatile as investors digest a mix of domestic corporate news, global macro signals, and currency dynamics. The defence sector rally suggests selective opportunity in capital goods and strategic sectors tied to government spending themes. Investors should continue to track FII activity, rupee movement, and any policy announcements that could act as near-term  catalysts.

We advise a cautious stance, focusing on quality large-caps and selective mid-cap opportunities in defence, IT, and energy while staying alert to any shifts in global risk appetite.

March 06, 2026· 15:50 IST

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments

Indian equity markets extended their decline following the prior session’s relief rally, as escalating U.S.–Iran tensions disrupted key Middle Eastern oil and gas supplies, driving crude prices higher.

A sustained rise in oil prices could weigh on investor sentiment and adversely affect India’s twin deficits, inflation trajectory, and the RBI’s monetary stance.

An uptick in U.S. 10 year bond yield and a stronger dollar have prompted FIIs to adopt a risk off approach toward domestic equities. While geopolitical tensions remain a near term overhang, selective value buying opportunities are expected to emerge, offering long term investors attractive entry points.

Sudeep Shah - Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities

Nifty opened on a weak note and traded within a tight consolidation range for most of the session before breaking below the lower end of the range towards the last hour and closing lower. The index ended the day at 24450, down 1.27%. On the daily chart, Nifty formed a bearish candle and gave a lower close with bears taking control over the bulls late during the day. Nifty closed the week below the crucial 24,600–24,570 support zone, a zone that previously witnessed strong buying interest during September 2025 and early February 2026.

On the sectoral front, Nifty Defence ended the day as the top sectoral gainer. The Index has given a consolidation breakout on the daily chart and looks poised to continue its up move. CPSE was the next best performing Index, ending the day with a gain of 0.42%. On the other hand, Nifty Financial Services, ended the day as the top sectoral loser and closed below its 200-Day EMA on the daily chart, followed by Nifty Realty, which extended its weakness further. With regards to stocks, BEL & ONGC emerged as the top stock gainers amongst the Nifty pack while ICICI Bank & Eternal emerged as the top two losers.

The Midcap index traded within a narrow range for major part of the day. Last hour sell off led to the formation of small-bodied red candle with a minor upper wick, suggesting that the index struggled to sustain at higher levels. Meanwhile, the Smallcap index was the best performing index until the last hour of the day before selling pressure at higher levels, led to the Index giving up its marginal gains and closing in the red.

The market breadth remained weak as the advance-decline ratio was titled in the favour of bears at day’s close. A total of 318 stocks out of the Nifty 500 universe ended in the red.

Nifty View

Going ahead, the immediate support for Nifty is placed in the 24350-24300 zone. This zone acted as a strong support in the month of August 2025. Any sustainable move below this zone could result in Nifty extending its weakness towards 24100, followed by 23800 in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 24750–24800 zone is likely to act as an immediate resistance.

Bank Nifty View

Bank Nifty also opened weak and gradually drifted lower through the session, ending the day at 57783, down 2.15%. Notably, with Friday’s close, the index has closed below its 20-week EMA for the first time since September 2025, indicating a potential shift in medium-term momentum.

For Bank Nifty, the immediate support is placed in the 57400–57300 zone, which coincides with the 200-Day EMA. Any sustainable move below this zone could result in Bank Nifty extending its weakness towards 56900, followed by 56500 in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 58200–58300 zone is likely to act as an immediate resistance.
