Closing Bell: Markets erase morning gains, Nifty below 25,500, Sense up 50 pts; auto, metal outperform

In a highly volatile session on the first day of the March series, Indian benchmark indices ended on a flat note, with the Nifty closing below 25,500. At close, the Sensex was up 50.15 points or 0.06 percent at 82,276.07, and the Nifty was up 57.85 points or 0.23 percent at 25,482.50.

Rupee traded in a narrow range near 90.90 as market participants remained cautious amid fresh uncertainty around the US trade framework. After the US court dismissed parts of Trump’s tariff structure, renewed statements from Trump regarding potential consequences for countries revisiting trade terms have kept currency markets on edge.

For now, rupee remains range-bound with support seen near 91.25 and resistance around 90.50, awaiting clearer direction from global trade developments and dollar index movement.

Today, the benchmark indices witnessed a volatile trading session. After a roller-coaster activity, the Nifty ended 58 points higher, while the Sensex was up by 50 points. Among sectors, the Metal Index outperformed, rallying 2.60 percent. Technically, the market opened on a strong note, but after an intraday rally, it again witnessed profit booking at higher levels, which is largely negative.

We are of the view that the 20-day SMA (Simple Moving Average) or 25,600/82500 will act as an immediate resistance zone for day traders. As long as the market trades below this level, the weak sentiment is likely to continue on the downside, with a potential slip toward the 200-day SMA or 25,350-25,300/82000-81800. Conversely, if the market moves above the 20-day SMA or 25,600/82500, the pullback could extend toward 25,750-25,800/82800-83000.

The Indian Indices opened on a positive note today following global optimism specifically the rally in the US Software stocks with market looking to stabilize following the sharp sell off. The Nifty closed today at 25,482.5 (up 0.22%) while Sensex closed at 82,276.07 (up 0.06%) with Metals, Auto, Pharma and IT sectors positive while FMCG and Oil & Gas were negative.

On the stock specific front in Nifty 50, HCL Tech, Tata Steel and Bajaj Auto were the top gainers while Reliance, SBI, Adani Ports and Eternal were the losers.

One of the major underperformers for the day were the Solar/Renewable Energy segment. The reason for the same was the duty imposed by US. The US has slapped a preliminary 125.87% countervailing duty on Indian solar imports on the grounds that they are unfairly subsidized by the Indian Government. This had a negative impact on companies like Waaree Energies and Premier Energies with both down approx. 10% and 6% respectively.

Regarding the IT sector, there was a rebound supported on the belief that AI may work with the IT industry than simply replacing them. In IT there has been some stock specific news as well with TCS forming a partnership with GitLab Inc. with an aim to leverage the GitLab's pre-built AI agents and intelligent orchestration for software development. Additionally, Coforge has secured a USD 158 million, five year contract from a UK-based client.

Indian markets opened with a gap up, driven by upbeat global cues and a rebound in U.S. tech stocks as AI related uncertainty eased. Additionally, dovish signals from the BoJ supported regional sentiment, keeping Asian markets firm. However, the initial strength tapered off as renewed tariff focused comments from the U.S. President reignited global trade concerns, limiting the day’s gains with depreciation in INR.

Looking ahead, geopolitical tensions such as U.S.–Iran developments, along with AI and tariff related news flow, are likely to shape market direction in the near term.

Nifty opened with a gap-up and extended gains to an intraday high of 25,653. However, selling pressure at higher levels dragged the index lower, leading to a fill of the morning intraday gap. The index eventually closed at 25,483, up 0.23%. On the daily chart, Nifty has formed a small-bodied candle with a long upper shadow, indicating supply emerging at higher levels. Notably, the selling pressure was seen around the 50-day EMA.

On the sectoral front, Nifty Metal ended the day as a top sectoral gainer followed by Nifty Pharma, which witnessed a fresh breakout on the daily chart. On the other hand, Nifty PSU Bank, which was in a strong trend, saw profit booking in today’s session and ended the day as the top sectoral loser, followed by Nifty FMCG. With regards to stocks, HCL Tech & Bajaj Auto emerged as the top stock gainers amongst the Nifty pack while Reliance & SBI emerged as the top two losers.

Midcap and smallcap indices relatively outperformed the frontline indices today. Midcap formed a small-body candle with minor upper and lower shadows on the daily chart. Smallcap, on the other hand, gave a higher close, forming a small body bullish candle.

The market breadth was firm as the advance-decline ratio was tilted in the favour of bulls at day’s close. A total of 318 stocks out of the Nifty 500 universe ended in the green.

Nifty View

Going ahead, the immediate support for Nifty is placed in the 25400–25350 zone. Strong rebound was seen from this zone on the previous two occasions. Any sustainable move below this zone could result in Nifty filling the gap and extending its weakness towards 25150, followed by 24950 in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 25600–25650 zone is likely to act as an immediate resistance.

Bank Nifty View

The 61,300–61,320 zone acted as a strong intraday resistance during the initial hours of trade. Subsequent selling pressure pulled the index lower, with Bank Nifty coming close to the previous day’s swing low of 60,802 and closing slightly higher towards the close. The daily RSI also failed to sustain above the 60 mark and turned lower, suggesting a pause in the ongoing bullish momentum.

For Bank Nifty, the immediate resistance is placed in the 61400–61500 zone. Any sustainable move above this zone could result in Bank Nifty extending its up move towards 62000, followed by 62500 in the short term. On the downside, the zone of 60800–60700 zone is likely to act as an immediate support.

Nifty witnessed another volatile session today. The index rallied nearly 225 points in early trade to a high of 25,652 but failed to sustain momentum and gradually gave up gains to close at 25,475 , up just about 50 points.

The rejection near the highs indicates supply continues to emerge in the 25,650–25,800 zone. Immediate support is placed at 25,400–25,350, while resistance remains at 25,800–25,850.

Technically, Nifty remains in a sideways range, with neither bulls nor bears establishing clear control. A decisive move beyond the current resistance or a breakdown below support will likely determine the next trend.

Until a breakout occurs, traders should expect range-bound volatility and avoid chasing sharp intraday moves.*

Indian rupee ended flat at 90.95 per dollar on Wednesday versus previous close of 90.95.

SBI, ITC, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, Reliance Industries were among major losers on the Nifty, while gainers were Tata Steel, HCL Technologies, Bajaj Auto, Shriram Finance, Adani Enterprises.

Broader indices outperformed with Nifty Midcap index adding 0.5%, and smallcap index rising1%.

On the sectoral front, auto, healthcare, IT, metal, pharma up 1-2 percent, while telecom index down 1%, FMCG, PSU Bank down 0.4% each.

Promoters and Dixon Technologies are likely to sell up to a 5.8 percent stake in Aditya Infotech via a block deal, with the offer size estimated at around Rs 1,000 crore, CNBC-TV18 reported, quoting sources.

Coforge said it has secured a $158 million contract from a UK-based client for a period of five years. The deal adds to the company’s order book and provides medium-term revenue visibility. Shares of Coforge were trading at Rs 1,234.80, up 1.86 percent on the day.

The IT services and solutions provider has expanded its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver AI-enabled software development lifecycle (SDLC) capabilities to enterprises worldwide. The company has received a letter from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stating that, based on the available information, the SEC has concluded its investigation and does not intend to recommend any enforcement action against the company at this time.

The company had initiated a detailed investigation into an anonymous complaint alleging improper payments to healthcare professionals in Ukraine and potentially other countries, which could constitute a violation of US anti-corruption laws, including the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) vertical of L&T has secured a batch of EPC orders to establish electricity grid system elements in India and abroad.

In India, PT&D has received order for design, supply and construction of two 220 kV Gas Insulated Substations in the Durgapur–Raniganj–Asansol industrial belt of West Bengal. The scope also includes associated transmission line segments with advanced conductors and multi-circuit towers.

In the Middle East, PT&D has won orders from key utilities for the turnkey construction of five substations and over 250 KM transmission lines. Located in three different countries in the region, these projects are up to 500 kV level. In one of the projects, the scope also involves supplying and installing a 400 kV underground cable system.

Novelis has announced its entry into a subscription agreement with AV Minerals, the sole shareholder of Novelis and a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. As per the agreement, AV Minerals has agreed to purchase 13.33 lakh Novelis common shares (no par value) for $200 million at a price of $150 per share.
