Markets traded with a downside bias on Friday and ended lower, weighed down by mixed global cues and caution ahead of the Union Budget. The Nifty opened with a downside gap and remained range-bound throughout the session, eventually settling at the 25,320 level, down by 0.39%. Sectoral trends were mixed, as metals witnessed sharp profit booking after the recent surge, while IT and financials also edged lower. In contrast, FMCG, auto and realty stocks closed in the green. Broader indices traded choppily and ended flat to marginally lower, reflecting a cautious, risk-off undertone across the market.
Market sentiment remained subdued amid lingering concerns over geopolitical tensions and global trade developments. Uncertainty ahead of the Union Budget, coupled with continued weakness in the Indian rupee, further added to the negative bias and kept participants on the sidelines.
Our view on the Nifty remains unchanged. Sustenance above the 25,350 level could result in a further rebound towards the 25,600 zone, while a decisive break below the long-term moving average, the 200 DEMA around 25,150, may derail the recovery and drag the index towards the 24,750–24,900 zone. With all eyes on the Union Budget, we expect heightened volatility during the special trading session on Sunday and suggest preferring a hedged approach.

Gaurav Garg, Lemonn Markets Desk
Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty recovered sharply from early losses on January 30 after a gap-down opening, supported by value buying and positive cues from the Economic Survey.
Buying interest was seen in defensive and consumption-heavy stocks, with Apollo Hospitals, Tata Consumer Products, Nestle, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and ITC emerging as top gainers in the Nifty pack.
Sentiment improved after the Economic Survey projected India’s GDP growth at 6.8–7.2 percent in FY27, underpinned by strong domestic demand and steady capital expenditure. Note that low inflation and resilient credit growth could support double-digit nominal GDP growth and healthy earnings expansion over the medium term.
Markets also drew comfort from a moderation in foreign portfolio investor outflows over the past two sessions, suggesting a possible shift in FPI strategy. In addition, expectations of value buying ahead of the Union Budget on February 1 supported sentiment, with investors positioning for announcements favouring infrastructure, defence, manufacturing, renewables and consumption.
From a technical perspective, key support for the Nifty remains in the 25,000–25,050 zone, while a sustained move above 25,450 would be required to extend the ongoing pullback rally.

The Indian market posted weekly gains, led by recovery across market cap. The BSE midcap and the small cap indices outperformed the larger peers. BSE Metals (commodity rally), capital goods (budget expectation) and Oil & Gas (rise in oil price) were the major gainers in this week, whereas BSE Auto index (reacted to India EU FTA) witnessed correction.
The INR (vs USD) that has been weakening in recent weeks, hit fresh record lows this week. Oil prices have been climbing sharply in this week — with Brent crude and WTI hitting multi-month highs on rising geopolitical risk. From India’s perspective, sharp increase in oil prices can fuel inflation, put pressure on currency and widen the current account deficit.
The Indian market witnessed a decent Q3FY26 earnings season, with aggregate earnings marginally ahead of expectations until now. FII continues to sell Indian equities with net selling in cash market in Jan 2026 (till date) crossing Rs 40,000 crore.
Global equity markets priced in weakening of the Dollar index, the US Fed keeping policy rates unchanged, increased geopolitical tensions, and a sharp increase in gold and silver prices. In the coming week, Union Budget, commodity price movement, geo-political developments, currency movements, Q3FY26 results & management commentary and FII activity will influence the Indian equity market.

Nifty opened on a weak note and spent most of the session in a narrow, sideways range. The index found strong intraday support twice in the 25220–25210 zone and staged a smart recovery towards the last hour. However, it closed the day at 25,321, down 0.39% for the day. After bouncing off its 200-day EMA in the previous session, Nifty failed to see meaningful follow-through and ended the day trading inside the prior day’s range.
On the sectoral front, Nifty Media ended the day as the top gainer with gains of 1.85%. Nifty Defence also saw gains of 1.43%. On the other hand, Nifty Metal closed over 5% lower and ended the day as a top sectoral loser, followed by Capital Markets, which lost nearly 1.89%. With regards to stocks, Nestle India & Tata Consumer emerged as the top stock gainers amongst the Nifty pack while Hindalco and Tata Steel emerged as the top two losers.
The Midcap index quickly shrugged off its initial weakness and filled the intraday gap early in the session. However, strong resistance in the 58,650–58,600 zone led to renewed selling pressure. The index eventually closed at 58,432, down 0.19%, indicating supply emerging at higher levels. Smallcaps relatively outperformed the Midcap index. After a weak start, the index recovered swiftly and closed 0.32% higher at 16,879. Despite the strong intraday recovery, the index continues to trade below its key short- and long-term moving averages, suggesting that the broader trend remains cautious.
The advance-decline ratio was however, skewed in the favour of bulls at day’s close. A total of 328 stocks out of the Nifty 500 universe ended in the green.
Nifty View
Going ahead, the immediate resistance for Nifty is placed in the 25,450–25,500 zone, with the Index failing to decisively close above this zone after attempting twice in the last six sessions. A decisive breakout above this zone could result in Nifty extending its pullback towards 25,650, followed by 25,800 in the near term. On the downside, the 200-day EMA zone of 25,200–25,150 zone is likely to act as a strong support.
Bank Nifty View
Bank Nifty largely mirrored Nifty’s price action. The index opened weak and traded sideways for most of the session before finding strong intraday support around the 59,550–59,500 zone. A late-session recovery helped it close at 59,610, down 0.58%. Overall, the price action remained range-bound, reflecting a lack of fresh directional triggers.
For Bank Nifty, the immediate resistance is placed in the 60,000–60,100 zone, making it a crucial supply area to watch. Any sustained move above this zone could lead to Index continuing its up move on the upside towards 60,400, followed by 60,800 in the near term. On the downside, the 20-day EMA zone of 59,400–59,300 zone is likely to act as a strong support.

Today, the Indian equity markets ended on a weak note as multiple factors triggered broad based selling across sectors. The Sensex fell around 0.35% to close near 82,269, while the Nifty 50 declined 0.40% to about 25,320.
The fall was driven by profit-taking ahead of the Union Budget, sharp correction in commodities, and weak global cues, which together kept investor sentiment cautious. The biggest pressure came from commodities, especially metal stocks. The Nifty Metal index dropped nearly 5%. Copper prices corrected sharply after hitting record highs, with MCX copper falling 3% and global prices easing on profit booking, a stronger US dollar, and softer demand signals. Silver saw an even steeper fall of 8-10%, while zinc, aluminium, and nickel declined 3-4%. As a result, metal stocks like Hindustan Copper, NALCO, Hindustan Zinc, and Vedanta fell, reflecting a classic pullback after an overbought rally.
Global uncertainty further weighed on markets. Concerns around a possible US government shutdown and a cautious US Federal Reserve outlook added to risk aversion. Although the Fed kept rates unchanged, its commentary suggested limited scope for rate cuts in 2026, dampening sentiment for rate sensitive sectors.
Looking ahead, focus now shifts to the Union Budget on February 1. Selective opportunities may emerge post-budget, especially in sectors less exposed to commodity price swings.

Indian equity markets remained volatile ahead of the Union Budget, with benchmark indices dragged lower by weakness in IT and metal stocks. The IT sector lagged due to global growth concerns and higher U.S. bond yields, while gold and silver declined amid a stronger dollar. Persistent FII selling and continued rupee depreciation kept market sentiment cautious.
With geopolitical risks and global tariff pressures rising, the Union Budget is keenly awaited for cues on growth support and fiscal discipline. Globally, although a deal to avert the latest U.S. government shutdown provided temporary relief, markets remain watchful ahead of the appointment of a new Fed Chair, as a more hawkish stance could tighten liquidity and weigh on emerging markets.

Silver has exhibited a remarkable rally over the past year, with prices in India rising from around ₹1.5–1.6 lakh per kg in early 2025 to above ₹4 lakh per kg by late January 2026 — implying a ~165–170% gain over the last 12 months and strong continuation into the current year as prices reached record levels above ₹4 lakh per kg on 29 January 2026. This reflects a blend of safe-haven demand, tight supply and structurally rising industrial consumption across solar, electronics and manufacturing, which is particularly relevant to India’s growth story. However, silver remains a volatile metal, with historical annualised volatility often in the 25–35% range, higher than gold, and the sharp run-up increases the risk of near-term corrections.
From an investment perspective, we recommend calibrated, staggered allocations rather than lump-sum deployment to manage entry-point risk while retaining exposure to silver’s longer-term structural drivers.

Bank Nifty has reclaimed its falling trendline breakout zone and is now sustaining above its short-term 20-day and 50-day moving averages, indicating improving price structure. Momentum indicators are also supportive, with RSI witnessing a bullish crossover, suggesting strengthening upside bias. However, on the derivatives front, the 60000 strike holds the highest open interest from both call and put writers, making it a crucial pivot level. Being a high-beta index, volatility is expected, with support placed at 59000 and resistance near 60400 levels.

The Indian policy makers (both government and the RBI) have already implemented measures like personal income tax cut, gst rationalisation, 8th pay commission and interest rate cut to boost consumption and economic activity. We believe the government will stick to its fiscal consolidation plan in the upcoming budget and may not have enough room for any additional measures. Hence, the budget is likely to be more of a BAU and may not have any Big Bang announcement.

Spot gold surged to a fresh all-time high of $5,597/oz on Thursday, while silver also touched a new peak at $121.6/oz, amid weaker dollar and lingering geopolitical risks. However, bullion prices saw a sharp reversal, with gold sliding toward $5,100/oz and silver toward $108/oz on profit-taking, compounded by a broader sell-off across global markets. The session was highly volatile, with both metals rebounding from intraday lows to close at $5,375/oz and $115.7/oz, respectively. Today, gold slipped below $5,100/oz and silver dipped below $105/oz amid continued profit-taking and reports of President Trump's imminent nomination of inflation hawk Kevin Warsh as next Fed chair tonight. Coupled with this, Trump and Senate Democrats reached a tentative deal to avoid a US government shutdown, weighing on haven assets.
WTI crude oil climbed to a five-month high of $66.48/bbl, supported by rising concerns over potential supply disruptions should the U.S. launch a military strike on Iran. Renewed threats from President Trump have heightened geopolitical risk, with possible Iranian retaliation extending to disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint that accounts for roughly one-fifth of global crude oil flows. However, oil prices retreated below $64/bbl today amid a broader risk-off tone in global markets and a rebound in the U.S. dollar. Still, prompt WTI spreads remain supportive, with March futures trading at a 40-cent premium to April, maintaining a bullish backwardation structure that signals tighter near-term supply.

Nimesh Chandan, Chief Investment Officer, Bajaj Finserv Asset Management
This Budget comes at a very crucial juncture as far as markets are concerned. Most investors will look to the budget for how it handles fiscal prudence while supporting sectors that are affected by the US tariffs. The most important area to watch will be the steps Finance Minister takes to attract durable FDI and FPI flows into the economy.
The Government has done a lot in the last year to stimulate domestic demand and to ensure India remains the fastest growing economy in its peer group. While consumption is showing signs of a pick-up, incentives to encourage private capex is one of the important expectations. Budget is expected to continue its focus on government capex and spending on Defence.
