Closing Bell: Nifty below 25,700, Sensex slips 230 pts; metal, PSU banks buck the trend

Indian benchmark indices ended lower in the volatile session on January 14 with Nifty below 25700. At close, the Sensex was down 244.98 points or 0.29 percent at 83,382.71, and the Nifty was down 66.70 points or 0.26 percent at 25,665.60.

Today, the Indian equity benchmarks ended in the red, with the Sensex slipping about 245 points and the Nifty closing below the 25,700 mark, dragged by selling in large cap IT, autos and select financials amid rising global trade tensions and stock specific disappointments.

The negative close came despite resilience in broader markets, as midcap and smallcap indices outperformed and metal and PSU bank stocks stayed relatively firm.

Tata Elxsi was a key stock in focus, extending its post results correction. The stock fell 5% after Q3 FY26 numbers revealed a sharp decline in net profit on a YoY basis, impacted by the implementation of new labour codes and still elevated valuations. Despite sequential improvement in revenue and margins, multiple brokerages highlighted stretched multiples versus peers and uneven growth across verticals, prompting profit booking.

The broader metals space were relatively better placed, supported by firm commodity prices and hopes that domestic infrastructure and energy spending will cushion any external demand hit, even as export prospects to the US remain under a cloud due to higher reciprocal tariffs on several Indian goods.

US tariffs on Indian seafood under Trump’s trade policy remained a significant overhang. A steep effective tariff burden, particularly on shrimp exports, threatens margins and volumes for Indian seafood exporters, with industry studies and trade bodies warning of meaningful revenue pressure in coming quarters. Adding to the uncertainty, the US Supreme Court is nearing a key decision on the legality of these broad tariffs imposed under emergency powers.

In the near term, we expect Indian equities to remain range-bound with a cautious bias, as investors continue to balance domestic growth resilience against global trade-related uncertainties and stock-specific earnings risks. As a result, market participants may prefer a selective, bottom up approach, favoring stocks with visible earnings traction and reasonable valuations.

The benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty witnessed sharp intraday volatility on Wednesday as caution prevailed amid sustained foreign fund outflows and global tariff-related concerns. After slipping to early lows, domestic markets pared most of their losses on the back of selective value buying and traded largely flat by mid-afternoon.

The Sensex fell to a low of 83,185.20 before recovering nearly 350 points to trade at 83,505.56, down 0.15 percent, while the Nifty hovered near the 25,700 level at 25,692.30, lower by 0.16 percent. Buying interest emerged in pockets such as metals, oil and gas, and consumer durables, helping limit the downside after recent corrections.

Market sentiment remains fragile, with both indices having declined in six of the last seven sessions amid concerns over US tariff measures, geopolitical tensions and persistent foreign portfolio outflows. FPIs have sold nearly ₹16,600 crore worth of equities so far in January, following heavy outflows in 2025. Additional volatility was driven by the advancement of the weekly derivatives expiry to Wednesday, while positive cues from Asian markets provided some support.

From a technical perspective, the Nifty managed to hold above the 25,620–25,715 support zone. A sustained move above 25,715 could trigger a recovery towards 26,020, while a break below 25,600 may open the downside towards 25,300.

Today, the benchmark indices witnessed range-bound activity. The Nifty ended 67 points lower, while the Sensex was down by 245 points. Among sectors, Metal and PSU Bank indices rallied over 2 percent, whereas the IT index lost the most, shedding over 1 percent. Technically, after a muted open, the market registered narrow-range activity. On the lower side, it found support near 25,600/83200, while intraday profit booking was seen near 25,800/83800.

We are of the view that the intraday market texture is non-directional; perhaps traders are waiting for either side to breakout. On the higher side, above 25,800/83800, the market could move up to 25,880-25,900/84000-84200. On the flip side, below 25,600/83200, selling pressure is likely to accelerate. If it falls below this level, it could retest the levels of 25,500-25,450/83000-82800.

The Indian rupee has depreciated to its lowest level in three weeks, even as the central bank stepped in to curb volatility. The currency remains under pressure as imported commodity prices climb and domestic equities face headwinds from persistent foreign fund outflows.

From a technical perspective, USDINR exhibits a bullish bias with resistance positioned at 90.40. A decisive close below the 89.90 support level would be required to shift this near-term outlook.

Domestic markets remained cautious amid lingering uncertainty over the India–US trade deal, with FIIs staying risk-averse. However, the restart of negotiations this week has instilled renewed hopes. Metals led the rally as prices climbed on expectations of U.S. rate cuts, supported by softer inflation data and safe-haven demand amid geopolitical tensions.

Broader markets performed well given selective buying in mid- and small-cap segments. Globally, equities traded mixed as investors awaited the U.S. December PPI and major bank earnings. Looking ahead, focus will shift to Q3 FY26 earnings, where initial IT results were broadly in line with expectations, though bottom-line performance was impacted by one-off costs.

The Nifty Bank index is currently consolidating above its falling trendline breakout levels and is sustaining above both its 20-day and 50-day SMA, indicating a structurally positive setup. However, momentum appears to be weakening as the RSI is placed near 53 and is slightly sloping downwards, highlighting a lack of strong buying momentum. The index is expected to regain momentum once it decisively reclaims the 59800 level. Until then, the index is likely to trade in a broad range of 59000–59800, where 59200–59150 acts as a crucial support zone near the 50-day SMA, while 59800 will continue to act as the immediate range resistance.

Indian rupee ended 12 paise lower at 90.30 per dollar on Wednesday versus previous close of 90.18.

Tata Steel, NTPC, ONGC, Axis Bank, Hindalco Industries are among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers are Tata Consumer, TCS, Asian Paints, Maruti Suzuki, HUL.

BSE Midcap and smallcap indices ended in the green.

On the sectoral front, metal, PSU Bank, power, oil & gas index up 0.5-2%, while auto, IT, realty down 0.5-1%.

Largecap stocks traded with a mild negative bias on Wednesday, with losses remaining largely contained despite selective selling. Stocks such as ICICI Lombard, Asian Paints, TCS, HUL, and ICICI Bank slipped between 1–3 percent, reflecting stock-specific pressure rather than any broad-based risk-off move. Overall, market action remained mixed, with gains in metals and energy counters offsetting weakness in select defensives and financials.

Buying interest intensified in pockets of the largecap space on Wednesday, led by metal and PSU names. Vedanta and Hind Zinc jumped over 5–6 percent each on heavy volumes, while Tata Steel, Axis Bank, ONGC, and NTPC also posted solid gains, helping offset otherwise subdued broader market momentum.

Mid- and small-cap stocks edged higher in late trade, offering mild relief after recent pressure. The Nifty Midcap 150 and Nifty Smallcap 250 were both up around 0.3-0.6 percent, while the BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap indices also traded modestly in the green. Despite the intraday recovery, the broader market remains weak on a short-term basis, with both mid- and small-cap indices still showing declines over the past week and month, underscoring cautious sentiment beyond the frontline indices.

Gains in benchmark index Nifty were driven largely by Axis Bank, which emerged as the top contributor after rising over 3 percent. Heavyweights such as Reliance Industries and Tata Steel also lent solid support, alongside strength in metals with JSW Steel and Hindalco Industries trading firmly higher. Other positive contributors included Bharat Electronics, Grasim Industries, Titan Company, NTPC and Shriram Finance, helping offset weakness elsewhere in the index.

Sectoral trends remained mixed in late morning trade. The Nifty Metal index stood out, rising about 2.5 percent and extending its strong one-year performance, while Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Energy also traded modestly higher. In contrast, defensives and consumption-linked segments stayed under pressure, with Nifty FMCG down over 5 percent on a one-year basis and Nifty IT continuing to lag, reflecting sustained weakness in the sector. Realty and auto indices were marginally lower, indicating a selective and cautious market tone.

Select Nifty 100 stocks staged a sharp rebound from their day’s lows in late trade. Vedanta, Hindustan Zinc and Tata Steel stocks led the recovery, rising about 4-5 percent from their intraday troughs. Banking and industrial names such as Axis Bank, Bosch and Jindal Steel also recovered over 3 percent from their lows, while NTPC, ONGC, Coal India and Bharat Electronics pared a part of their early losses with gains of around 2-2.5 percent from the day’s bottom.

Indian equity benchmarks were largely unchanged in late morning trade, with the Nifty 50 hovering around 25,739 and the Sensex marginally lower near 83,605. While frontline indices struggled for direction, midcap and smallcap stocks edged higher, lending some stability to the broader market even as weekly and monthly trends remained under pressure.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company was quoting at Rs 1,846.30, down Rs 40.90, or 2.17 percent.
