Nifty faced selling pressure as uncertainties surrounding tariffs and geopolitical issues continued to weigh on Indian equities. The index slipped from the day’s high of 24,700, closing more than 200 points lower.

In the short term, the index is likely to remain volatile with no clear directional bias.

On the downside, immediate support is placed at 24,450; a break below this level could drag it towards 24,337 or lower. On the upside, immediate resistance is seen at 24,660–24,700, and a sustained move above this zone could push it towards 24,850 or even 25,000.

August 12, 2025· 16:17 IST

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets failed to build on Monday’s gains and ended nearly half a percent lower amid volatility. The session started on a positive note, but noticeable pressure in heavyweights, particularly banking and financial stocks, not only erased the early gains but also dragged the index into negative territory. Eventually, the Nifty settled near the day’s low at 24,487.40 levels.

On the sectoral front, the trend was mixed—pharma, auto, and IT ended higher, while banking and financials emerged as the top losers. The broader indices also traded mixed, with market breadth closing flat.

This decline reflects a lack of conviction among participants amid mixed cues, and the bias is likely to turn positive only if the Nifty decisively sustains above 24,600, its 100 DEMA. Meanwhile, select stocks across sectors are showing notable strength on the back of strong earnings and upbeat prospects. Participants should focus on these outperformers and avoid laggards while anticipating a rebound.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments

The national market reacted with volatility to the ongoing developments in global trade tariffs, reflecting caution following the extension of the U.S.–China tariff truce and ahead of key inflation data due later today. The US inflation figures with any signs of tariff-related impact could influence the Fed’s policy stance. Meanwhile, domestic inflation is expected to continue below the RBI’s range.

Sector-wise, healthcare and automobile stocks posted gains, while financials and real estate weighed on the index.

In the near term, stock-specific movements are likely to persist with investors’ attention focused on domestic consumption-led sectors to beat volatility.

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities

The selling pressure has emerged from the highs on Tuesday, after a stellar upmove of Monday and Nifty closed the day lower by 97 points. After opening with a positive note the market surged higher in the early-mid part of the session. However, sharp weakness got triggered from the day's high of 24700 and the market remained weak in the mid to later part of the session.

A small red candle was formed on the daily chart with long upper shadow. Technically, this market action indicates a lack of strong upside momentum to surpass the overhead hurdle. The bulls may hold the ground as long as the base of 24300 is protected.

The short term uptrend that resumed after a sharp upmove of Monday remains intact and we expect buying to emerge from near the supports of 24300-24400 levels in the coming sessions. Hence, one may expect Nifty to retest the crucial hurdle of around 24700 in the short term.

August 12, 2025· 15:55 IST

Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical Research and Derivatives at SBI Securities.

On Tuesday, the benchmark index Nifty opened with a strong upside, rallying sharply during the first hour of trade. However, the index failed to hold above the key 24700 level and subsequently witnessed a correction of over 200 points. By the end of the session, Nifty settled below the 24500 mark, posting a decline of 0.40%.

Among the Nifty constituents, Tech Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki stood out as the top gainers, showing resilience amid broader market weakness. In contrast, Bajaj Finance and Trent were the biggest losers, contributing to the index’s decline. Sectoral performance was mixed. Nifty Media and Nifty Pharma indices outperformed, closing in the green, while Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Private Bank indices were among the top laggards, reflecting pressure in financial counters.

The broader market also showed signs of caution. The Nifty Midcap 100 index ended with a loss of 0.27%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 closed flat, indicating limited participation beyond the large-cap space. Market breadth was slightly negative, with the advance-decline ratio tilted in favour of the bears. Out of the Nifty 500 universe, 272 stocks ended in the red, highlighting weakness across sectors.

Nifty View

The market couldn’t build on Monday’s gains, showing that the current pullback is still weak and lacks strength within the larger downtrend. Despite a strong start to the week, Tuesday’s session saw Nifty give up early gains and close below 24500, down 0.40%. This lack of follow-through buying underscores the absence of conviction among participants, raising concerns about the sustainability of the recovery attempt. Without a decisive move higher, the pullback risks fizzling out, reinforcing the prevailing bearish undertone.

Going ahead, the zone of 24360-24330 will act as immediate support for the index. While on the upside, the zone of 24620-24650 will act as a crucial hurdle.

Bank Nifty View

The banking benchmark Bank Nifty has relatively underperformed frontline indices on Tuesday as it has tumbled by 0.84%. Going ahead, the zone of 54700-54600 will act as crucial support for the index. While on the upside, the zone of 55400-55500 will act as an immediate hurdle.

Vaibhav Vidwani, Research Analyst at Bonanza

Today, Indian stock market witnessed a subdued trading session, with both benchmark indices ending in negative territory despite opening with a positive bias. The BSE Sensex closed at 80,235, down 368 points (-0.46%). The Nifty 50 ended at 24,487.00, declining by 97 points (-0.40%).

The market's negative close can be attributed to several key factors. Banking and financial stocks emerged as the primary drag, with heavyweights like HDFC Bank (-1.29%) and ICICI Bank (-1.02%) pulling down the indices. The financial sector witnessed significant selling pressure, reversing Monday's gains that were driven by State Bank of India's strong earnings. Profit-booking is observed, as investors remained cautious ahead of crucial domestic and US inflation data.

The session was characterized by mixed sectoral performance. While IT and auto sectors provided some support, with stocks like Maruti Suzuki (+1.93%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (+1.58%) gaining ground, the heavyweight banking sector's weakness overshadowed these gains. The Nifty Bank index declined 0.84%, giving up part of Monday's 0.9% rally.

The focus remains on upcoming economic data releases, particularly India's July CPI inflation data and US CPI data. A Reuters poll suggests India's retail inflation may have dropped to an eight-year low of 1.76% in July, which could influence RBI's future monetary policy stance. Market participants are also closely monitoring the planned US-Russia diplomatic talks scheduled for later this week, which could significantly impact global risk sentiment.

Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, ICRA

The tepid performance of advance tax collections seems to have been dampened by high refunds of corporation tax collections and a later deadline for personal income tax filings. The available data on advance tax collections suggests that the GoI’s personal income tax and corporation tax collections are required to record a high double-digit growth in the remaining part of FY2026, to meet their respective FY2026 targets.

While this may seem challenging, the growth rates in net PIT and CT collections are likely to improve as the year progresses, and the base normalises.
