Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets remained volatile on the weekly expiry day and ended marginally lower amid mixed cues. After an initial uptick, the Nifty 50 drifted lower for most of the session, though a rebound in the final hour trimmed some losses and helped it settle at 25,732.30. Sectoral trends were mixed, keeping participants engaged, with IT and metal stocks among the gainers, while realty and pharma remained subdued and closed in the red. The midcap and smallcap segments witnessed selective participation, with smallcaps showing modest resilience even as overall market breadth stayed moderate.

Market action reflects the interplay between earnings-related reactions and global uncertainty. Early optimism was supported by encouraging IT earnings and signs of progress in India–U.S. trade discussions, which lifted sentiment in the first half. However, the lack of follow-through and fresh selling in heavyweights across sectors capped the upside. Ongoing geopolitical and global trade concerns also continued to weigh on risk appetite, keeping trading largely stock-specific.

We maintain a cautious view on the Nifty and suggest continuing with a sell-on-rise approach until the index decisively reclaims the 26,000 level. A decisive breach of medium-term 100-day EMA, placed near 25,600, could accelerate the decline toward the 25,400 zone. Given the earnings season and fluctuating global cues, it is prudent to stay light and wait for clearer confirmation of the next directional move. Participants should focus on stock-specific opportunities and prefer a hedged approach amid the prevailing choppiness.

Gaurav Garg, Lemonn Markets Desk

Markets saw sharp intraday volatility on Tuesday but managed to recover nearly 450 points from the day’s lows, supported by value buying, optimism over India-US trade talks and a steady start to the earnings season. The Sensex slipped from an early high of 84,258 to a low of 83,579 before trimming losses to trade near 83,700.

Sentiment improved as investors stepped in after recent corrections, with hopes of renewed momentum in India-US trade discussions providing support. Early IT earnings from TCS and HCLTech beat expectations, lending strength to technology stocks, while benign December inflation kept rate-cut hopes alive. Positive global cues and selective buying in banking stocks also aided the rebound. However, volatility remains elevated, with the Nifty needing to sustain above 25,800 for further upside, while support lies near 25,470.

Domestic equities experienced a downturn due to renewed concerns about potential U.S. tariffs on countries trading with Iran, overshadowing the initial optimism from the newly appointed U.S. ambassador's positive statements on the trade deal. Investor sentiment remained cautious amidst the rupee's weakness, rising crude prices, higher U.S. bond yields, and persistent FII outflows.

On a brighter note, India’s December CPI remained within the RBI’s target range, reinforcing expectations of future rate cuts. However, the Q3 earnings season commenced on a subdued note, with lackluster results from a leading IT major. Profit booking was prevalent across most sectors, though small-cap stocks showed notable gains.

Abhinav Tiwari Research Analyst at Bonanza

Today, the Indian stock market ended lower, after starting the day on a positive note. Overall market sentiment remained weak, with more stocks falling than rising, even though some defensive stocks showed stability. The main reason for the market’s reversal was fresh global concern after Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on countries doing business with Iran. Since China is Iran’s largest trading partner, investors feared broader trade tensions. This negative global cue outweighed optimism around ongoing India US trade discussions.

Earnings from IT companies also disappointed the market. TCS reported steady revenue growth, but its net profit fell nearly 14% YoY, which did not meet investor expectations. HCL Technologies also saw an 11% decline in profit, despite strong revenue growth and healthy order inflows. As a result, IT stocks faced selling pressure, dragging down the broader indices.

The rupee weakened slightly against the dollar due to global risk aversion and higher crude oil prices. Looking ahead, markets may stabilize as India-US trade talks progress and domestic institutional support remains strong. However, geopolitical risks and foreign selling could keep volatility high in the near term.

Rupee traded slightly weak near 90.18 down 0.05% as capital market softness, driven by tariff threats linked to trade with Iran, kept FIIs in selling mode and weighed on fund flows. Attention is now on US CPI data this week, a key input for the Fed ahead of its month-end meeting, which could drive dollar-led volatility. The rupee finds support near 90.45, while resistance is seen around 89.60.

January 13, 2026· 15:45 IST

Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities

After finishing Monday’s session on a flat note, the Indian rupee depreciated against the greenback as regional currencies struggled. This decline was compounded by a rebound in crude oil and high metal prices, coupled with a cautious market environment.

Looking ahead, the USDINR pair has immediate support at 89.90 and resistance at 90.40. Short term traders should watch the 89.90 level closely, as a move below it could trigger a short-term trend reversal.

Saurav Ghosh, Co-founder, Jiraaf

As we look ahead to Budget 2026, retail and bond investors alike are keenly focused on fiscal consolidation and credible deficit guidance. A disciplined glide path toward narrower deficits not only helps keep government bond yields steady but also creates conditions for Indian corporates to tap the debt markets with greater confidence.

Increased corporate borrowing via bonds can meaningfully boost capital formation and support broader economic growth. On the tax front, I do not expect major changes in direct or indirect taxes, other than clarifications, since both regimes have undergone significant reform over the last 12 months.
