Overview

Retail sales in Spain surged by 9.5% from a year earlier in March 2023, after an upwardly revised 4.1% rise in the prior month. It marks the fourth consecutive month of growth in Spanish retail activity and at the fastest pace since May 2021, mainly boosted by sales of non-food products (22.2%), notably personal equipment (+28.7%) and other products (+17.7%). On the other hand, spending on food declined (-2.4%). On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 0.5% in March, following a downwardly revised 0.2% fall in the previous month.
