Overview

Germany's economy shrank 0.1 percent from a year earlier in the first quarter of 2023, following a downwardly revised 0.8 percent expansion in the previous three-month period and missing market expectations of a 0.3 percent growth, a preliminary estimate showed. It was the first period of contraction since the first quarter of 2021, as the rising cost of living, alongside the recent policy tightening by the European Central Bank started to bite.
