The market extended its losing streak for the fifth straight session, continuing its pattern of lower highs and lower lows. The Nifty breached the crucial support level of 25,000, which is now expected to act as immediate resistance.
Momentum indicators, particularly the MACD, have signaled a fresh sell crossover on the daily chart. With the monthly F&O expiry approaching next week, a short-covering rally is possible if Nifty manages to reclaim the 25,000 mark.
On the downside, the immediate support is at the 50-day moving average 24,876, and a break below this level could lead the index further down towards the 24,600 zone.
Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities
Sentiment continued to remain weak as selling by foreign investors intensified this week as shares worth nearly Rs 9,000 crore have been offloaded so far. The rejig in GST slabs to boost economic growth has not helped much, as investors are more worried about the pending US-India trade deal and the falling rupee against the dollar.
Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical Research and Derivatives at SBI Securities
The benchmark index Nifty 50 continued its downward trajectory, marking a fifth straight session of losses. From its recent peak of 25449, the index has now corrected by over 550 points, reflecting sustained selling pressure. On Thursday, it closed below the 24900 mark, ending the day with a decline of 0.66%.
Within the Nifty constituents, Bharat Electronics and Hero MotoCorp emerged as the top gainers, bucking the broader trend. On the flip side, Trent, Power Grid, and TCS were among the worst performers, dragging the index lower.
Sectorally, the market breadth remained weak. Except for Nifty Metal, all other sectoral indices ended in the red. Nifty Realty, Nifty IT, and Nifty Auto were the biggest laggards, reflecting broad-based weakness.
The pain was equally visible in the broader markets. Both the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices registered losses for the fourth consecutive session. The Advance/Decline ratio was heavily skewed in favour of the decliners, with 368 stocks from the Nifty 500 universe ending in the negative territory.
Nifty View
On Thursday, the benchmark index Nifty 50 breached crucial short-term support levels, slipping below both its 20-day and 50-day EMAs. Notably, these averages have now started to edge lower, indicating a shift in short-term trend dynamics. Meanwhile, the upward slope of the 100-day and 200-day EMAs—typically considered medium to long-term trend indicators—has flattened considerably, suggesting a potential loss of bullish momentum in the broader trend.
Adding to the cautious outlook, the RSI on the daily chart has dropped below the 50 mark and continues to trend downward. This reflects weakening price momentum and growing bearish sentiment among market participants. The combination of declining moving averages and a falling RSI points to a market that is losing strength, with technical indicators now leaning toward a consolidation or corrective phase unless fresh buying interest emerges.
Going ahead, the 100-day EMA zone of 24770-24740 will act as crucial support for the index. If the index slips below the level of 24740, it will lead to further correction upto the 24600 level. While, on the upside, the 20-day EMA zone of 25000-25040 will act as a crucial hurdle for the index.
Bank Nifty View
The banking benchmark index Bank Nifty displayed relative outperformance compared to the frontline indices, but ultimately closed in negative territory on Thursday. Importantly, it has slipped below its 20-day EMA. On the daily chart, Bank Nifty has formed a bearish candle with a long upper shadow, which typically signals selling pressure at higher levels. This suggests that despite intraday attempts to move higher, sellers dominated the session, pushing prices lower by the close.
Adding to the cautious tone, the daily RSI has also dropped below the 50 mark, reinforcing the view that momentum is weakening. A falling RSI below 50 often reflects a shift in sentiment from bullish to neutral or bearish.
Going ahead, the zone of 54500-54400 will act as crucial support for the index. While, on the upside, the zone of 55300-55400 will act as an important hurdle for the index.
Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities
The Nifty has fallen below the crucial support level of 25,050, which also coincides with the 38.20% Fibonacci retracement of the previous rise from 24,400 to 25,450. Additionally, the index has slipped below the 21 EMA on the daily timeframe, confirming increasing bearish sentiment.
It appears that the bulls are stepping back, giving bears more control over the market. On the downside, immediate support is placed at 24,800; a break below this level could trigger a deeper and more serious correction. On the upside, resistance is seen at 25,000.
Nandish Shah - Deputy Vice President, HDFC Securities
Nifty continued its southward journey for the fifth session on the trot on the back of weak global cues, losing 166 points or 0.66%, to close at 24890. Nifty has given away more than 50% of the gains which was registered from 29th Aug 2025 bottom (24404) to 18th Sep 2025 top (25448).
Amidst the broad-based selling, a few stocks managed to defy the trend. BEL, Hero MotoCorp, and Hindalco emerged as the top gainers within the Nifty pack. On the flip side, it was a particularly tough session for stocks like Trent, Powergrid, and Tata Motors, which ended as the major losers. Cash market turnover on the NSE was higher by 6% compared to yesterday.
Sectoral performance reflected the overall weak sentiment, with all indices ending in the red, with the sole exception of Nifty Metal. The sectors that faced the most significant selling pressure were Realty, IT, Auto, and Pharma.
The broader market indices continued profit booking for the fourth day in the row. The Nifty Midcap 100 Index fell by 0.64%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 Index lost 0.57%. Market breadth remained weak for the fifth straight session, with declining shares sharply outnumbering advancing ones, as reflected in a BSE advance-decline ratio of 0.55.
Trend for short term has turned bearish now as Nifty closed below its 20 and 50 DEMA. The next immediate support for the Nifty is placed at 24,803, while on the upside, the zone of 25,000 to 25,050 is now likely to act as an immediate resistance.
Osho Krishan, Sr. Analyst – Technical & Derivatives, Angel One
The Indian equity markets continued to decline, breaking through each technical support level one after another. The benchmark index commenced in the trading session on a subdued note but subsequently entered a bearish phase. By the end of the trading day, the sell-off intensified, resulting in the Nifty50 index falling below 50 DEMA. Ultimately, the index closed in negative territory for the fifth consecutive session, finishing slightly below the 24900 zone, with a 0.66 percent loss.
The recent pronounced bearish trend underscores the total absence of bullish sentiment and emphasizes the significance of technical support levels, which have been progressively undermined with each trading session. Consequently, the Nifty50 index has now fallen below its 20-day and 50-day EMA, indicating a weaker outlook in the short-term period.
On the levels front, the next potential support is in proximity to 24800, coinciding with the sloping trendline, followed by 100 DEMA around 24750. On the contrary, the 25000 mark is now supposed to act as an intermediate hurdle, and a recovery beyond this level could potentially bring some positive momentum back into the broader markets.
Going forward, it is important to take a cautious approach given the current lack of bullish sentiment in the market. For now, consider keeping lighter positions until we see a return of upward momentum. This strategy can help manage risk effectively while we wait for more favorable conditions.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
Indian markets extended its losing streak for a fifth straight session as investors booked profits amid persistent FII outflows and uncertainty over US-India trade talks, which is expected to dent Q2 GDP growth.
Broad based selling prevailed in the market with heavy selling across auto, IT, pharma, and healthcare sectors, while metals gained on the back of China’s liquidity support and copper supply concerns. Overall, sentiment remains cautious ahead of India’s H2FY26 borrowing and US macroeconomic data, expected to be released over the end of the week.
Vaibhav Vidwani, Research Analyst at Bonanza
Today, The Indian stock market closed sharply lower, the Sensex fell approximately 555 points and the Nifty dropped below the 24,900 mark. Persistent foreign institutional selling, weak global cues, and heightened concerns over US visa curbs, especially the new $100,000 H-1B visa application fee, kept investor sentiment subdued. Market participants also remained wary of the strengthening US dollar and rising crude oil prices, which together raised fears over fiscal pressure and further foreign outflows.
All major sectoral indices ended in the red, with Realty, Auto, and Private Banking stocks leading the losses. Tata Motors extended notable declines following news of a prolonged shutdown at its JLR plant, while IT and financial heavyweights closed negatively. Broader indices underperformed.
Currency Check | Rupee closes flat
