The benchmark indices Nifty has continued its northward journey for the fifth consecutive trading session. Most noteworthy, it has ended the session above psychosocial level of 25000 mark. Bank Nifty, on the other hand, relatively underperformed, trading sideways, in a narrow range.
Among the constituent of the Nifty index, Infosys and TCS were top gainers. While, BEL and Shriram Finance were top losers. Among the sectoral indices, Nifty IT and Nifty FMCG emerged as top gainers, while Nifty Media & Nifty Pharma were the top losers.
The broader indices, Nifty Midcap and Nifty Small Cap 100 also ended on a positive note. They both have strongly outperformed frontline indices for the second consecutive trading sessions. Market breadth was relatively strong, with 261 stocks out of the Nifty 500 ending in the green.
Nifty Outlook
In the last two trading sessions, Nifty was unable to move past the 25000-25020 zone and close convincingly above the same. The level of 25,000 was also where the maximum call open interest for the Index was placed. However, steady up move on Wednesday ensured Nifty closed decisively above this key resistance zone. Nifty, now trades well above its key short-term moving averages of 20 & 50 DEMA on the daily chart.
The Relative Strength Index, a momentum indicator, has been on the rising mode since last three days, which reinforces the bullish sentiment. Additionally, the 25,000 Strike saw call writers (bears) exiting the positions and put writers (bulls) aggressively trying to build positions, leading to resistance becoming weaker and paving the way for the bulls to move higher.
Key Support: 24,850–24,800; breach of this zone could drag the index towards 24,650. Immediate Resistance: 25,150–25,200.
Bank Nifty View
Post the gap up on 18th August, Bank Nifty, traded in a tight range in the following two trading sessions. Bank Nifty, in the last two sessions, took support multiple times around the 55,550-55,600 zone. Lack of support from its key heavyweights, HDFC Bank & ICICI Bank, weighed on the sentiment.
On one hand, where Nifty & Sensex has closed above previous two day’s high, Bank Nifty has not closed above its previous two day’s high, indicating relative underperformance compared to Nifty & Sensex. With the Wednesday’s closing, the Index now trades below its key short-term moving averages of 20 & 50 DEMA.
Key Support: 55,600–55,550; a break below which could open doors to 55,400–55,350. Immediate Resistance: 55,950–56,000.
Vaibhav Vidwani, Research Analyst at Bonanza
Today, The Indian equity market closed on a positive note. The Sensex gained 213 points to settle at 81,857, while the Nifty 50 rose 70 points, closing above the critical 25,000 mark at 25,050. The session was marked by broad-based buying interest, with major IT stocks Infosys (+3.78%) and TCS (+2.64%) leading the rally, reflecting robust sector momentum. FMCG and Realty stocks also contributed significantly, mirroring strong consumer sentiment and the ongoing real estate upcycle. Sustained buying in IT and FMCG majors following favorable quarterly outlook and continued digital transformation spends.
Optimism around GST rate reforms and resilience in domestic consumptionoriented sectors, especially autos and consumer goods. Profit-booking was seen in selective Pharma and Media names, but it was insufficient to dent the bullish sentiment. Bank stocks underperformed, mostly trading flat to negative, but steady flows in autos and new-tech stocks ensured index resilience.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
The Indian market sustained its positive momentum, supported by strong domestic inflows and favourable macro tailwinds. However, rich valuations and external risks, particularly the U.S. tariffs and sanctions on purchase of Russian crude, continue to pose challenges. Hence, greater visibility on U.S. trade policy and the path of earnings recovery will be critical.
Meanwhile, global sentiment is cautious ahead of the release of the FOMC minutes later today, with investor attention gradually shifting to the U.S. Fed Chair’s speech at Jackson Hole this weekend, which is expected to provide clearer guidance on future policy direction.

The rupee depreciation, following a two-day rally, can be attributed to heightened concerns over US tariffs and dollar demand from importers as it gains more than 100 paise to 87 level versus the US dollar. Comments from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, which reaffirmed the Trump administration's intent to increase tariffs on India, have dampened market expectations for a favourable terms.
We anticipate that in the coming days, the USD/INR pair will encounter resistance near the 87.30 level while finding support at 86.80.
