The annual inflation rate in Australia climbed to 7.8% in Q4 of 2022 from 7.3% in Q3 and above market forecasts of 7.5%. This was the highest print since Q1 1990, boosted by rising costs of food, automotive fuel, and new dwelling construction. Food prices grew the most since Q3 2006 (9.2% vs 9.0% in Q3). Prices also increased further for transport (8.0% vs 9.2%), housing (10.7% vs 10.5%), alcohol & tobacco (4.4% vs 4.0%), furnishings (8.4% vs 7.7%), recreation (9.0% vs 5.0%), health (3.8% vs 2.7%), and insurance & financial services (5.0% vs 4.2%). On a quarterly basis, consumer prices went up 1.9% in Q4, after a 1.8% surge in Q3, marking the fourth consecutive period of record numbers last seen after the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax in 2000. Meanwhile, the RBA Trimmed Mean CPI advanced 6.9% yoy, the fastest pace since the series began in 2003, outside the midpoint of the central bank’s 2-3% target. Quarter-on-quarter, the index gained 1.7%.
