Imran Khan ‘killed in jail’?

A wild claim went viral on social media after an Afghanistan-based media outlet reported that former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan had been killed inside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. As the report spread rapidly, netizens began flooding X with posts about Khan’s alleged death.

However, Moneycontrol has not independently verified the claim.

This is not the first time such rumours related to Imran Khan’s death have circulated on social media. Similar false claims were widely shared in May 2025, including posts alleging that the former Pakistani Prime Minister had been shot dead or assaulted in his home.

Making matters worse, an unverified press release, said to be from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was also widely shared online, falsely claiming that Imran Khan had died.

However, Pakistan's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting later called a press release announcing the death of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan “fake” and urged the public to “reject irresponsible behaviour.”

Thousands of supporters of Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), gathered outside the jail, demanding that authorities disclose information about their leader's health.

Due to mounting public pressure, the military government deployed hundreds of additional security personnel around Adiala Jail as PTI supporters marched toward the prison to seek updates on his condition.

This comes weeks after Rawalpindi police detained the sisters of the PTI founder. The prolonged sit-in on Adiala Road ended on Wednesday following negotiations between the police and protestors. Khan’s three sisters, accompanied by party leaders and workers, had staged the protest after being denied permission to meet him inside the jail.

Several PTI leaders, including Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma, Noreen Khan, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Salman Akram Raja, and Sheikh Waqas Akram, were stopped by police while attempting to reach the jail. The sisters were held at the Factory checkpoint, while other leaders were blocked at the Dahgal checkpoint.
