Severe fog conditions across large parts of northern India have disrupted flight operations, prompting major airlines and airport authorities to issue urgent travel advisories. With visibility dropping sharply in several cities, passengers have been advised to check flight status before heading to the airport as delays, diversions, and cancellations continue through December 31.

Airlines including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, along with Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, have warned of cascading disruptions due to persistent dense fog, especially affecting flights to and from the national capital.

Flight disruptions due to fog: What travellers need to know

Low visibility caused by dense fog has impacted flight schedules across multiple regions, particularly Delhi-NCR and northern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for dense fog in Delhi until 10 a.m., further intensifying concerns for air travellers.

IndiGo issues fog advisory for northern India

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, issued a travel advisory on Monday, warning passengers of possible delays at several airports in northern India due to foggy weather conditions. The airline urged travellers to regularly monitor their flight status for real-time updates and assured on-ground customer support to assist passengers as operations stabilise once visibility improves.

Air India warns of cascading network disruptions

Air India also cautioned passengers that flight departures on December 31 are likely to be affected, particularly for services operating to and from Delhi. According to the airline, the dense fog forecast could trigger cascading disruptions across its network.

The airline highlighted its FogCare initiative, under which passengers booked on select fog-affected flights receive advance alerts about possible delays. Eligible travellers can opt for a full refund without penalty or reschedule their flight at no additional cost, offering some flexibility amid weather-related uncertainties.

SpiceJet alerts passengers across multiple cities

SpiceJet, in a post on its official X handle, warned of potential delays in both arrivals and departures across several cities, including Delhi, Srinagar, Amritsar, Jammu, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Darbhanga, Guwahati, Bagdogra, and Patna, on December 31, 2025. Passengers were advised to check their flight status frequently before travelling to the airport.

Delhi Airport operating under CAT III conditions

Dense fog engulfed Delhi-NCR in the early hours of Wednesday, December 31, significantly reducing visibility and disrupting air travel. Indira Gandhi International Airport confirmed that flight operations were being conducted under CAT III protocols, which allow aircraft to land in extremely low visibility but may still result in delays or cancellations.

In a passenger advisory issued at 8:00 a.m., Delhi Airport stated that ground teams were actively assisting travellers and advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight updates.

Weather forecast: Fog to persist, light rain expected on New Year’s Day

The IMD has forecast continued dense fog for the day, with minimum temperatures around 8°C and maximum temperatures reaching 23°C in Delhi. Skies are expected to remain generally cloudy, with light rain predicted on New Year’s Day, which could further impact travel plans.

Travel advisory for passengers

Passengers travelling over the next 24 hours are advised to:

  • Check flight status before leaving for the airport.
  • Allow extra travel time due to low visibility.
  • Stay in touch with airline customer support.
  • Consider flexible rebooking or refund options if available.

As fog conditions persist, travellers should remain alert to further advisories and operational changes across India’s aviation network.
