A rare fruit known for extraordinary price and flavour is gaining attention among home gardeners in India. The famous Miyazaki mango, often called “Eggs of the Sun,” has recently been cultivated successfully on a rooftop terrace in Udupi, a coastal district of Karnataka. The achievement belongs to gardener Joseph Lobo, whose small terrace experiment revealed that even luxury fruits can grow in limited urban spaces. His story, reported by The Better India, is encouraging urban gardeners to experiment with exotic crops.

Miyazaki mango from Japan reaches terrace gardens

The Miyazaki mango originates in Japan and is highly prized. The fruit stands out because of its striking deep red colour. It also has an intensely sweet taste and creamy texture. Luxury fruit markets sometimes sell it at remarkable prices. Reports suggest prices can reach Rs 2.5 lakh per kilogram. In rare cases the fruit may reach Rs 3 lakh. Such high value makes the variety famous worldwide.

Growing this mango outside its native climate remains challenging. The fruit typically grows in carefully managed orchards. Gardeners must provide strong sunlight and nutrient rich soil. The plant also requires constant monitoring during early growth stages. Because of these demands, few gardeners attempt to cultivate it at home.

Joseph Lobo decided to try growing the mango on his terrace. He treated the plant similarly to other fruit trees. However he carefully maintained soil nutrition and watering schedules. After several years the plant finally produced fruit successfully. Lobo initially enjoyed the harvest with family members. Later a reporter identified the fruit as the rare Miyazaki variety.

Terrace farming shows potential for exotic fruits

The successful terrace cultivation surprised many urban gardeners. Lobo demonstrated that small spaces can still support rare fruit plants. Coastal weather with high temperatures is suitable for plant development. Sufficient sunlight and organic soil are a must for plant development.

Experts believe that patience is a must for plant development. Mango plants require a few years to produce fruit. Regular feeding and natural methods of pest control are a must for plant development. The example from Udupi now inspires others interested in terrace farming.

Researchers note that terrace gardens bring several environmental benefits. Urban landscaping can also enhance air quality and support pollinators. Local production of fruit can also promote environmental sustainability.

Steps to grow the world’s most expensive Miyazaki mango

  • Select a healthy sapling: Saplings are stronger than seeds.
  • Use a large container: Grow bags are suitable for plants to expand their roots.
  • Use a nutrient-rich mixture of soil: Regular soil is a must.
  • Make sure there is sufficient sunlight: Mango plants require sufficient hours of sunlight.
  • Avoid using chemicals: Natural methods are effective for plant protection.
  • Regularly feed plants: Organic food is a must for plant development.
  • Be patient: Fruit production takes a few years.

The Miyazaki mango remains one of the world’s most valued fruits. Yet stories like Lobo’s suggest it may grow beyond traditional orchards. With careful attention and patience, even a terrace garden may produce this rare delicacy.
