A total lunar eclipse is happening on Tuesday 3 March 2026. This is a rare event that skywatchers should not miss. This eclipse will be the last total lunar eclipse until late 2028 and early 2029, making it a special opportunity for observers worldwide.

During this eclipse, the full Moon will pass through Earth’s umbral shadow, causing it to turn a reddish hue, often called a “Blood Moon.” The colour comes from sunlight being filtered through Earth’s atmosphere before it reaches the Moon’s surface.

What will Happen in Total Lunar Eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon. Earth’s shadow completely covers the lunar surface. As sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, shorter blue wavelengths scatter. The remaining red and orange light bends toward the Moon. This filtered light gives rise to the famous “Blood Moon” effect.

The “Blood Moon” Effect on 3rd March

On 3rd March, the Moon will enter Earth’s darkest shadow. As totality begins, sunlight will bend through Earth’s atmosphere. Blue light will scatter away. Red and orange wavelengths will continue onward.

This filtered light will bathe the lunar surface. The result is the dramatic “Blood Moon” glow. The deeper the shadow and clearer the atmosphere, the richer and darker the crimson colour appears.

Why This Eclipse Should Not Be Missed?

This is not just another full Moon. Total lunar eclipses are not extremely rare. But long gaps between them do happen. After this event, skywatchers would wait for nearly three years.

It is the last total lunar eclipse until 2029. After this event, there will be a long celestial pause. Skywatchers must wait nearly three years. Unlike a solar eclipse, no protective glasses are required. It is completely safe to observe.

How Long Will Totality Last?

The eclipse unfolds over several hours, beginning with a faint penumbral phase before moving into a partial shadow. The lunar eclipse will occur between 6:04 AM and 7:02 AM EST.

The total phase will begin when the Moon looks deep red. It will last about 58 minutes as it sits fully inside Earth’s shadow. The entire eclipse, including the faint outer phases, spans about 5 and a half hours.

A Reminder of Cosmic Rhythms

Lunar eclipses occur because the Moon’s orbit is slightly tilted. Perfect alignments are infrequent. When they do occur, they remind us of the precise mechanics governing our solar system.

Tomorrow night’s Blood Moon will not simply be a spectacle. It will mark the closing of a celestial chapter. After that, the skies will wait until 2029 to repeat the show.
