Nifty continued with weakness for the third consecutive sessions on Tuesday and closed the day lower by 74 points amidst volatility. After opening on a positive note, the market stood higher for better part of the session. Sharp weakness was seen towards the end and Nifty finally closed near the lows.
A long bear candle has been formed on the daily chart with minor upper shadow. Technically, this market action indicates down trend continuation pattern in the market for the short term. The formation of overlapping negative candles in the last few sessions signals sell on rise in the market.
The larger degree bullish pattern like higher tops and bottoms is intact and present weakness is expected to find base at the cluster support of around 25800-25700 levels to form a new higher bottom in the next few sessions (previous opening up gap-12th Nov and uptrend line). Immediate resistance is placed at 26050.
Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking
Markets were volatile on monthly expiry day and ended marginally lower, extending the recent phase of profit-taking. After a flat start, the Nifty moved within a narrow range for most of the session, but a late-hour decline dragged the index down. It eventually closed at 25,884.80 , down 0.29%.
Sectorally, the trend was mixed. Realty, metal, and pharma stocks registered gains, while IT and FMCG were among the notable laggards. Market breadth was slightly positive, supported by a mild rebound in the midcap and smallcap segments after the recent correction.
Sentiment remained cautious amid persistent global headwinds, including mixed US economic data and ongoing geopolitical concerns that continued to weigh on risk appetite. Domestically, traders stayed guarded due to the November derivatives expiry, with foreign institutional investor flows remaining subdued.
The index has been advancing at a measured pace since August 2025, with sharp retracements appearing after every up-move. A similar pattern seems to be unfolding now. The Nifty is once again approaching its short-term support at the 20-DEMA, near 25,800, which will be crucial to defend for momentum to sustain.
A breach could extend the consolidation phase toward the next major support at 25,600.
We recommend maintaining a cautious yet constructive outlook, with an emphasis on stock selection based on relative strength. Traders may also consider a few tactical short positions as a hedge against existing long trades.
Abhinav Tiwari, Research Analyst at Bonanza
The Indian markets closed on a negative note today following a neutral to negative opening despite supportive global cues. The market continues to trade largely sideways, with uneven earnings trends and derivatives positioning capping moves even though global signals remain supportive.
Nifty closed at 25,884.80, down 74.7 pts (-0.28%) while Sensex closed at 84,587.01, down 313.7 pts (-0.36%). The top gainers sector wise today were Realty and PSU Bank while the laggards were Media and Consumer Durables.
Stock wise, in Nifty 50 the top gainers were Bharat Electronics and Hindalco while Adani Enterprise and Tata Motors Passengers Vehicle were the losers.
Now post the earnings season, the key triggers which the market will be tracking are US Fed Reserve’s December policy, commentary and rate-cut expectations, progress on US-India trade deal and certain domestic macro data like GDP, CPI and IIP data. These data are expected to be crucial in deciding whether Nifty will be able sustain the 26,000 levels or not.
Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities
On the monthly expiry day, Nifty endured a choppy session for major part of the day before last hour fall dragged to Index down, which led to Index closing at 25,885, down 0.29%. The 25,920–25,930 zone acted as a strong intraday support, with the index attracting buying interest from this band twice during the day. However, it failed to hold this zone towards the last hour of the day and closed lower.
On the upside, Nifty struggled to cross the 26,025–26,035 resistance zone, which capped further gains. The RSI slipping back below 60 signals a pause in bullish momentum after the recent rally. Meanwhile, the ADX remains flat, indicating a lack of trend strength and absence of directional conviction in the market. Additionally, the MACD slope has turned flat, reflecting waning momentum and suggesting that the index is in a consolidation phase rather than starting a fresh trend.
For the second straight session, Bank Nifty has formed a small-bodied candle with relatively long upper wicks, indicating selling pressure at higher levels and a temporary pause in momentum. Since breaking out above the 58,550–58,650 zone on 17th November, the index has largely moved sideways over the past six trading sessions. This consolidation highlights a lack of strong follow-through buying after the breakout, suggesting that participants are waiting for a fresh trigger before taking decisive positions.
On the sectoral front, Nifty Realty and PSU Banks were top sectoral gainers, ending with a gain of 1.62% and 1.44% respectively. On the other hand, Nifty Media & Nifty IT were the top two sectoral losers, losing in the range of 0.6-0.9%. On the stock front, Hindalco and BEL ended up as the top gainers, while Adani Enterprise and TMPV emerged as the top two losers.
The Small cap 100 Index showed signs of stabilization at lower levels and ended with a gain of 0.19%, post-closing in the red for the previous five trading sessions. The Midcap 100 Index closed marginally above its 20-day EMA level and ended the day with a gain of 0.36%. The advance–decline ratio was evenly balanced as the market breadth remained neutral with neither bulls nor bears having a clear upper hand.
Nifty View
Looking at key levels, the 20-day EMA zone of 25,850–25,800 zone is expected to act as a crucial support for the Index. Any sustained move below 25,800 could drive the index towards 25,600. On the upside, the zone of 26,000-26,050 zone remains strong resistance for the Index.
Bank Nifty View
Looking at key levels, the zone of 58,600–58,500 zone is expected to act as a crucial support for the Index. Any sustained move below 58,500 could drive the index towards 58,000. On the upside, breakout above the zone of 59,200-59,300 can lead to continuation of up move in the Index.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments
The domestic market witnessed sharp volatility on monthly expiry day, driven by a weakening INR and continued FII outflows. Caution prevailed as investors awaited clarity on a possible rate cut in the upcoming FOMC meeting and progress on the Indo-US trade deal, despite some improving signals. Selling pressure is visible near the 26,000 level, though downside appears limited given strong domestic fundamentals, including a solid earnings outlook for H2. PSU banks and real estate stocks outperformed, supported by a strong revival in home loan demand and rising market share for PSU banks.

Riya Singh – Research Analyst, Commodities and Currency , Emkay Global Financial Services
The rupee’s slide to a record low near 89.50 reflects a mix of heavy import demand and delayed trade clarity, but the RBI’s recent USD 1.9 billion FX sale, which pulled reserves down to about USD 687 billion, shows it remains firmly committed to containing volatility around the 88.8 level. Seasonally stronger December flows, soft inflation near 0.25%, and resilient domestic growth offer some support, yet October’s record USD 41.7 billion trade deficit keeps the near-term bias tilted toward weakness. A brief test of 90 cannot be ruled out if external pressures persist, though active intervention should prevent disorderly moves.
