Blame it on the rising pollution, extreme temperatures, erratic lifestyles and poor diet choices, premature ageing is becoming a growing concern. No wonder, skincare has become a top priority, with brands regularly innovating to introduce new ingredients that combat wrinkles, acne and other signs of ageing.

Along the same lines, peptides have gained attention as a powerful ingredient in the fight against ageing. These small but mighty molecules, composed of short chains of amino acids, serve as building blocks for proteins like collagen, elastin, and keratin, which are essential for maintaining firm, resilient, and youthful skin.

But do peptides truly live up to their reputation?

As you age, your skin’s natural collagen production declines, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of elasticity. Peptides act as cell messengers, sending signals to boost collagen synthesis, enhance skin barrier function, and reduce inflammation. This makes them a valuable addition to any skincare routine. According to Nitin Guppta, Founder of Juhst, peptides can be game-changers. “Peptides work at a cellular level to rebuild and strengthen the skin. Unlike some anti-aging ingredients that can be harsh, peptides offer a gentle yet effective approach to skin rejuvenation," he says.

Guppta lists the different types of peptides and how they help transform your skin:

Types of peptides in skincare

  • Signal peptides: These peptides stimulate collagen and elastin production, helping the skin appear firmer and more youthful.

  • Carrier peptides: They deliver essential minerals like copper and magnesium, which aid in skin repair and healing.

  • Enzyme-inhibitor peptides: By slowing down collagen breakdown, these peptides help preserve skin’s structural integrity and combat premature ageing.

  • Neurotransmitter-inhibitor peptides: Often referred to as "natural Botox," these peptides relax facial muscles, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Benefits of peptides for skin:

Regular use of peptide-based skincare can lead to visible improvements in skin texture, hydration, and elasticity. Peptides play a crucial role in maintaining youthful, healthy skin, says Gupta. “They boost collagen production, reduce wrinkles and fine lines for a smoother, firmer appearance. Additionally, they strengthen the skin barrier, boosting moisture retention and providing protection against environmental stressors. By promoting cell renewal, peptides help improve skin texture and tone, resulting in a brighter, more even complexion," he adds.

Moreover, their  anti-inflammatory properties make them effective in soothing sensitive and acne-prone skin, reducing redness and irritation. “The best thing about peptides is that they are suitable for all skin types. Whether you have dry, oily, or sensitive skin, peptides help maintain balance and improve your skin health," suggests Guppta.

How to add peptides to your routine:

Peptides are most effective when added to leave-on products like serums, moisturisers, and eye creams. “To maximise their benefits, apply peptide-infused products after cleansing and before heavier creams to ensure optimal absorption. Since UV exposure accelerates collagen breakdown, using a daily sunscreen is essential to protect the skin. For even better results, pair peptides with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which help lock in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier,” says says Guppta.
