Sugar is all around us — in desserts, packaged foods, beverages and even foods we consider “healthy.” A bit of naturally occurring sugar from fruits is fine but if we eat too much added sugar it can be seriously bad for health. Research connects high sugar consumption to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even early aging. Most people are consuming much more sugar than they realize is healthy, on average.

But what if you quit added sugar for just one month? It might be tough at first as you add it in and your body adjusts. Sugar can impact dopamine levels, so one can experience any cravings or withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability or headaches. But after a couple days, your body actually recalibrates and you start feeling awesome. Paring out sugar for 30 days isn’t just about weight loss; it’ll benefit overall wellness, your mood, and, in the long run, increase your lifespan.

Here are eight incredible things that happen to your body when you give up sugar, as explained by Delhi-based nutritionist and lifestyle coach Dr Harshita Marwah from Indore.

Improved Energy Levels

Sugar overloads you with blood sugar spikes and then crashes, making you tired. So when there is no sugar, energy levels stabilize and your body depends on long-burning fuel sources such as complex carbohydrates and fat.

Weight Loss

Sugar is full of empty calories and causes your insulin levels to spike and store fat. Taking away sugar also diminishes your cravings and caloric intake, and you lose weight naturally.

Better Skin Health

Sugar is also inflammatory, which can trigger acne and premature aging. And yet when they quit, many report clearer, more radiant skin.

Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases

Less sugar means lower risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver by improving insulin sensitivity and decreasing inflammation.

Improved Digestion

Many sugary foods are introduced into the body with additives that will be toxic to a healthy gut. Cut out sugar, which in turns helps to beat the bloat and the agony of an unhappy gut.

Mental Clarity and Focus

Highs and subsequent crashes from sugar can impact how your brain functions. You can expect an enhanced focus, concentration, and getting rid of mood swing when you free yourself from sugar.
