Blood donation is vital for maintaining an adequate supply of blood for patients in need. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), blood donation plays a crucial role in saving lives, particularly in emergency situations such as accidents, surgeries, and childbirth complications.
Additionally, blood transfusions are essential for patients undergoing treatments for various medical conditions such as cancer, anemia, and blood disorders, explains Dr Ganesh Jaishetwar, Senior Consultant Hematologist, Hemato-Oncologist & Bone Marrow Transplant Physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
“Without regular blood donations, hospitals and medical facilities would struggle to provide life-saving treatments to patients. Therefore, donating blood not only helps in emergencies but also supports ongoing medical treatments, making it a crucial aspect of healthcare systems worldwide.” he adds.
However, there are numerous myths linked to blood donation. Dr Jaishetwar debunks some of them:
Myth: It is a painful process
Fact: The discomfort experienced during blood donation is minimal. Most donors describe it as a quick pinch when the needle is inserted, similar to a routine blood test. The entire process, from registration to post-donation refreshments, typically takes about an hour, with the actual donation lasting only 10 minutes.
Myth: May cause health issues/diseases
Fact: This is a common but unfounded fear. Blood donation is a highly regulated process with strict hygiene protocols. New, sterile equipment is used for each donor, eliminating any risk of infection. In fact, blood donation has proven health benefits with regeneration of healthy new blood to the donor.
Myth: May cause weakness
Fact: The human body replenishes the donated blood quickly. Within 24 hours, plasma levels are back to normal, and red blood cells are restored within a few weeks. Healthy adults can safely donate blood every 56 days.
Myth: High blood pressure or diabetic patients are ineligible to donate blood
Fact: Many people with well-managed chronic conditions can donate blood. For instance, those with controlled high blood pressure or diabetes (not requiring insulin) are often eligible. Always consult with the blood donation center regarding specific eligibility criteria.
Myth: Vegetarians and vegans are unable to donate blood
Fact: Vegetarians and vegans can absolutely donate blood. As long as they meet the general health requirements, their diet does not disqualify them. Iron levels are checked before donation, and people with adequate hemoglobin levels are eligible to donate.
Myth: Old age presents a barrier to blood donation
Fact: There is no upper age limit for blood donation as long as the donor is in good health. Many blood donation centers welcome older donors and assess eligibility based on health rather than age.
Myth: Blood donation is solely required in emergencies
Fact: Blood is needed every day to treat patients with various conditions such as cancer, trauma, surgery, and chronic illnesses. Regular donations ensure a stable supply and readiness for any emergency.
