Suicide is a complex and tragic issue that affects millions worldwide, claiming over 7 lakh lives each year. In India alone, more than 1.7 lakh people die by suicide annually. Suicidal thoughts can be deeply distressing and difficult to recognise, both for those experiencing them and their loved ones. It's vital to be aware of the warning signs that might indicate someone is struggling with these thoughts. By identifying the warning signs early, you can take important steps to seek professional help and provide the support needed.
Suicide is preventable. Recognising the warning signs and getting timely help can save lives, says Dr Madhusudan Singh Solanki, Senior Psychiatrist & HOD Mental Health & Behavioural Sciences, Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, "Suicide is a public health crisis, but the right intervention at the right time can make all the difference," he adds.
Dr Solanki explains 7 warning signs of suicidal thoughts to watch out for:
Talking about feeling like a burden or overwhelmed with guilt: If someone frequently talks about feeling like a burden to their family, friends, or society, this may indicate a deep sense of guilt or worthlessness. They may express sentiments such as, "Everyone would be better off without me."

Feeling hopeless or trapped: People may talk about feeling hopeless or trapped, as if they have no way out of their situation. This overwhelming sense of despair can often be a precursor to suicidal ideation.
Extreme mood swings or rage: Unpredictable mood swings, especially when shifting from deep sadness to sudden anger, could be a cause for concern. Drastic changes in mood, especially anxiety or rage, can often mask deeper struggles.
Unbearable emotional and physical pain: Constant expressions of emotional or physical pain, to the point of feeling unbearable, may signal that someone is considering suicide as a way to escape their suffering.
Withdrawing from social circles: When someone withdraws from their usual social interactions, such as avoiding friends, family, or social activities, it may be more than just feeling 'down.' It could indicate that they are struggling internally.

Giving away belongings: One subtle but serious warning sign is when a person starts giving away possessions or making arrangements for their affairs. This behavior can be a signal of preparation for ending their life.
Changes in sleep and eating patterns: Dramatic changes in sleep, either insomnia or excessive sleep, or a noticeable change in eating habits can be physical manifestations of underlying mental distress.
Who's at-risk
Certain groups of people may be at a higher risk, including those struggling with mental health issues such as depression or substance abuse. People going through significant life crises, like financial loss, the end of a relationship, or personal trauma, are also vulnerable. Additionally, those exposed to violence, conflict, or discrimination may face higher risks.
If you observe these signs, it's essential to act. "Don’t be afraid to ask directly about suicidal thoughts. It doesn’t increase the risk, but can actually open the door for help," emphasises Dr Solanki. He adds, “Engage with the person compassionately and encourage them to seek professional mental health support immediately.”
