A Chinese social media influencer has sparked shock after claiming he spent four million yuan (about Rs 5 crore) on hyaluronic acid injections to sculpt artificial eight-pack abs. The man, who goes by Andy Hao Tienan online, described himself as “the first such case in China.”

Hao, from Heilongjiang province in northeastern China, has nearly 100,000 followers and is known for beauty and fashion content. His profile claims that 20 per cent of his body now contains hyaluronic acid—a substance naturally found in the body that helps retain moisture and lubricate joints.

According to Hao, he plans to inject a total of 10,000 doses and has already completed 40 per cent of his goal. A few months ago, he made headlines for spending four million yuan on 40 doses injected into his shoulders, collarbones, chest and abdomen to create the illusion of muscle definition.

“I totally agree that muscles do not grow on cowards,” Hao said in a video. “But you have to understand, I have had so many injections. I am no coward any more. Could you dare to do the same?”

Hao claims the procedure has given him permanent abs and even teased plans to apply for a Guinness World Record for “the longest-lasting artificial abs made of hyaluronic acid.” He added: “If my abs have not disappeared in three years, I will do a live-stream cracking walnuts on my abs for everyone to see.”

In a recent update, nearly five months after the procedure, Hao expressed satisfaction with the results. “You never get any muscle swelling, it is just how I like it. Even the lines between the abs are still distinct,” he said, dismissing concerns that the filler would dissolve or clump together.

But, medical experts have raised alarms. Li Jialun, an attending doctor at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, warned that injecting such large quantities of hyaluronic acid could crush skin tissue and cause necrosis. “Dynamic muscle movement will look distorted, and natural muscles may weaken over time,” Li said, adding that displacement and bone erosion are likely risks.

Despite criticism, Hao insists his transformation is worth the cost and pain, calling it “a new standard for beauty.”
