The ‘Anyone But You’ actor Glen Powell recently sat down for a conversation with GQ and spoke about many things. Mainly about Tom Cruise. Who doesn’t like talking about Tom Cruise?
The actor revealed that he got close to Cruise during the production of their blockbuster ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.
Powell had originally auditioned for the role of Rooster but that ultimately went to Miles Teller. Cruise like Powell so decided to give him the role of Hangman. Powell accepted but set forward a few changes.
“What we were talking about is, how can Hangman service the story and give the flavour of the original ‘Top Gun’ that you need? I said my piece to Tom about what I do and what I do well, and he listened. Tom’s a listener. He listens to the crew members, he listens to his collaborators, and he hears people,” Powell said.
Powell recalled one of his favourite memories with Cruise. The action star personally dropped Powell back to London in a helicopter (Yes, you read that right) from Pinewood Studios. Cruise also pretended to lose control of the chopper.
Powell said, “Tom goes ‘oh no, oh no,’ and he starts dropping the helicopter over London. I was like, ‘Am I about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom in a smoking hole in the middle of London?’”
Glen Powell also revealed that Cruise has a 6 hour “film school” video that he has put together for his friends. According to Powell, he was sitting in a theatre alone for 6 hours just watching Cruise speak directly to the camera about everything he has learnt being in the industry.
“He said, ‘This is just for my friends’,” Powell said. “In the video Cruise is like: ‘Do we all agree that this is what a camera is? This is the difference between a film camera and a digital camera…’ The funniest part is on flying. It was like he put together this entire flight school. So he would literally go, ‘Ok, this is what a plane is. Here’s how things fly. Here’s how air pressure works.’”
Powell said that Cruise does not intend to release the video in the public sphere. We will just have to imagine Tom Cruise looking directly at us and schooling us on cinema.
Glen Powell is being playfully called Tom Cruise’s son for he is also bringing people back to the theatres. His film ‘Anyone But You’ was a massive hit at the box office. He is becoming Hollywood’s go-to lead thanks to his charisma and intelligence.
His latest film, 'Hit Man' will be coming to Netflix on 7 June.
Glen Powell, Miles Teller and Tom Cruise are also set to return for 'Top Gun 3'.
