For the first time in nearly twenty years, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, two Hollywood icons, will formally reunite on screen. The cherished pair, who became a fan favourite after starring in the 1994 blockbuster Speed, are linked to a new romantic thriller that is presently in development at MGM Studios, according to Entertainment Weekly.
A "propulsive" romantic thriller, the untitled movie blends emotional depth with suspense. Noah Oppenheim, the screenwriter of The Maze Runner and Jackie, is writing the script.
The project will also include producer Mark Gordon, whose previous credits include Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot, bringing the team behind Speed back together. In addition to leading the cast, Reeves and Bullock are joining Oppenheim, Bibby Dunn, and Sarah Bremner as producers.
For both actors, speed was a turning point in their careers. On a modest $30 million budget, the high-stakes action thriller made about $350 million worldwide. After previous supporting parts, it thrust Sandra into the Hollywood spotlight and solidified Keanu as a financially viable action hero. Jan de Bont made his directorial debut with the movie, and his vision was essential to its success.
The Lake House, a romantic fantasy with a time-bending twist, was the last time the two appeared together. However, their on-screen interactions were limited due to the plot's nature. Fans, however, have long anticipated a more significant partnership between the two.
The stars made light of a potential third installment during a Speed screening at Los Angeles' Beyond Fest last year. The elderly version. "It won't be quick," Bullock hinted. Keanu merely added, "Retirement."
Sandra fondly acknowledged de Bont’s influence on Speed, saying, “All these things happened because the crazy man in the greenish jacket over there.” She went on to praise his vision and leadership, while also questioning whether today's film industry would have the “bravery” to attempt such a project again.
Meanwhile, Keanu is set to appear in John Wick 5 and Good Fortune, a comedy directed by Aziz Ansari. Sandra, who is maintaining a lower profile, is expected to return for the long-awaited sequel to Practical Magic alongside Nicole Kidman.
