Sara Ali Khan and Anushka Sen redefine sustainable glamour

In a dazzling display of sustainable fashion, Indian starlets Sara Ali Khan and Anushka Sen recently stunned fans by stepping out in traditional yet contemporary outfits, both made from recycled Banarasi sarees. Though worn at separate events, their choices bore a striking resemblance, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage through fashion.

Anushka Sen, a rising star in both acting and music, made history as the first Indian to perform live at Times Square. Representing the 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) – Quality Education, she performed her first-ever song "Graduation" in front of millions of viewers worldwide. Anushka Sen donned an exquisite gown made from upcycled Banarasi sarees for the occasion.

The dress was styled by @stylebykayal, who beautifully captured the significance of this milestone day. The gown, crafted from repurposed sarees, exuded a timeless elegance and garnered praise from a global audience, many of whom complimented her on the unique ensemble. Anushka proudly represented India on an international stage, all while embracing the rich textile history of her homeland.

In a similar fashion moment, Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan also wowed at a recent high-profile event — the Ambani family's Ganesh Chaturthi celebration at Antilia. Accompanied by her brother, Ibrahim Ali Khan, Sara stepped out in a one-of-a-kind lehenga created by renowned designer Mayyur Girotra.

Her outfit, like Anushka’s, was made from vintage brocade sarees, some 50 to 60 years old. The multicolored lehenga, featuring hues of purple, green, and pink, was intricately woven together to create a masterpiece that paid homage to Indian textile artistry. Styled by Ami Patel, Sara’s ensemble included a deep purple, backless choli with gold brocade embroidery and a tissue silk dupatta in bronze gold, detailed with zardosi zari embroidery.

The connection between the two fashion choices lies not only in the fabric but in the story of sustainability and tradition they convey. Both Anushka Sen and Sara Ali Khan embraced upcycled fashion, giving new life to vintage fabrics, showing a shift toward eco-conscious choices in the fashion world.

Despite their different platforms — one on the global stage at Times Square, the other at a private celebration in Mumbai — the two actresses embodied the same spirit of innovation while paying tribute to India’s rich cultural heritage.
