Japan's retail trade declined by 3.3 percent month-over-month in July 2020, after a 13.1 percent surge in a month earlier. This was the first drop in retail trade since April, amid a resurgence in COVID-19 cases in some parts of the country. Sales fell for general merchandise (-5.2 percent vs 42.2 in June), apparel & accessories (-20.9 percent vs 51.3 percent), (food & beverages (-2.6 percent vs 2.6 percent), others (-1.8 percent vs 14.2 percent), machinery & equipment (-19.7 percent vs 32.5 percent), and others (-2.8 percent vs 10.2 percent). On the other hand, sales grew much softer for motor vehicles (7.8 percent vs 22.4 percent), and fuel (1.5 percent vs 15.5 percent). On a yearly basis, retail trade dropped by 2.8 percent in July, compared to a 3.9 percent gain in June and market forecasts of a 1.7 percent fall.
