Your smartwatch might be keeping you active and healthy, but is it also exposing you to hidden dangers? While these devices are hailed for their health-tracking features, their bands could be silently compromising your well-being. Recent research suggests that some smartwatch bands might harbor chemicals linked to serious health risks

What’s hiding in your smartwatch band?

Recent research from the University of Notre Dame has raised concerns about smartwatch bands made from a material called fluoroelastomer. This high-end material, often found in premium smartwatch bands, is durable and flexible, making it a popular choice for tech giants like Apple, Google, and Samsung. But fluoroelastomers contain chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), sometimes called “forever chemicals” because they take an extremely long time to break down.

PFAS are everywhere—from the Arctic Circle to the deepest oceans. Some types of PFAS have been linked to severe health issues, including cancer, kidney problems, and hormonal imbalances. While we don’t yet know the full effects of one specific PFAS, called PFHxA, found in fluoroelastomer bands, experts are concerned about its potential risks.

Should you be concerned?

The Notre Dame study tested smartwatch bands from big brands and lesser-known manufacturers. The results were surprising: while cheaper bands (under $15) showed no PFHxA, many premium bands ($30 or more) contained high levels. PFHxA is often used in stain-resistant coatings and is a breakdown product of other PFAS.

Though it hasn’t been proven to directly cause health problems, the fact that it lingers in the body raises red flags. Scientists emphasize that more research is needed to understand how much PFHxA the body absorbs and its long-term effects.

What can be done

So, what can you do? First, check what your smartwatch band is made of. If it’s fluoroelastomer, you might want to switch to safer alternatives like silicone, fabric, leather, or stainless steel. These materials don’t require PFAS during production and are widely available.

While it’s too early to say if fluoroelastomer bands are a significant health threat, experts recommend precaution. After all, why take unnecessary risks with something that sits on your skin all day?
Your smartwatch may be a fitness tool, but it’s worth ensuring the band doesn’t come at the cost of your health.
